Introduction to 1 John
1 John 5:13
In studying an article or a book, it’s imperative to know the author’s purpose in writing it. In the case of John’s first epistle, it’s also very profitable, because the problems which people faced in John’s time are remarkably similar to the problems we face today. Listen as Dr. Boice introduces his study on the Epistle of 1 John on The Bible Study Hour.

A Life of Hope

Romans 8:24,25 A shark must continually go forward because if it stops moving, it will sink to the bottom of the sea. We will sink in our spiritual lives if we focus on the past or our present sufferings and circumstances. But we will grow strong if we keep moving forward with our eyes firmly fixed on Jesus and on the certain hope of everlasting glory with Him. Are you sinking spiritually or pr...

I love this man, his wonderful ministry. He died very young, maybe 62 years old in 2000 I think, but he left behind, at that younger age, plus he was pastoring full time...he wrote these expository Bible books and several were multi volume works on Genesis, Gospels I believe. It evades me now but I bet he wrote 40 books or so...and I can listen to him all day long...such a sound, solid preacher. I hope he is on YT more or there'd be a site of all his messages as others do.

Here's the problem I see. When Martin Luther King Jr evaluated Marxism/Soviet Union Communism, he unfortunately conflated the two, as evil as he saw Marxism, he also saw things that were necessary for the Christian. That is why he agreed with a former Archbishop of Canterbury, William Temple in calling it a 'Christian Heresy.' He noted how Marxism forgot that life was individual while noting that Capitalism forgot that life was social. And so we need to create a hybrid of the best insights of the two systems according to King. Today's reformed criticisms of anything Marxist employs a black-white worldview, an overuse of exclusive-or logic, of it that says it is either good or bad, and nothing Marxist has any value for the Christian. But Critical Theory, Critical Race Theory, and other theories are first based in observation. And here, the black-white worldview prohibits even the acknowledgement that Critical Theory and those theories based on it have even accurately reported on what it has observed and thus rejects everything. So let me return the favor of those in the podcast. We should note that one of the first subjects studied in Critical Theory was the authoritarian personality. And the kind of thinking that the authoritarian personality employs is a black-whiter worldview. Noting that we religiously conservative Christians have a penchant for authoritarianism, at least part of the analysis of Critical Theory that comes through the above podcast is more of an authoritarian reaction to Critical Theory rather than a Christian one.

Thanks for the interesting discussion. Raised evangelical, Church of the Nazarene (Wesleyan theology) for 12 years. Confirmed Catholic this Easter Vigil. I converted because Catholicism is true. Calvin's favorite ECF was St. Augustine, who said it's a sin NOT to worship Christ in the Eucharist under the appearance of bread and wine. If Calvin's or Luther's theology of the Lord's Supper is correct then their own favorite church father was an idolater and a bread-worshipping fool. Protestantism has no claim to substantial continuity with ECFs over Rome. It's not even close.

_"The reason Jesus rose from the dead was to conquer sin and death once and for all."_ How, exactly? As far as I can tell, that makes no sense. And how can an _all-knowing, all-powerful deity_ struggle to do *anything* it wants to do? That, too, seems to make no sense. _"The account of his crucifixion and resurrection are chronicled for us through their [the disciples] writings. Either they were liars or they were fools or they were telling the gospel truth."_ Apparently, _you_ are either a liar or a fool, because you certainly aren't telling the truth about _that,_ huh? As far as I can tell, we have nothing in writing from anyone who'd ever _met_ Jesus when he was alive. Heck, the gospels weren't even written in the same _language_ as Jesus and his disciples would have spoken. Remember, this is supposed to be a word for the skeptical. You're not supposed to be preaching to the choir _now._ (But, in reality, you are, aren't you? This is just to make existing believers feel good?) _"They're just lots of things contributing to the rise of atheism in our culture"_ Sure. But mostly, it's just better access to information, don't you think? It's easier to learn how preachers are spouting nonsense when you can get out of the religious bubble you were born inside. Well, that's why so many religious people - Christians, Muslims, Hindus, etc. - are just _desperate_ to keep their kids inside whatever bubble they were born into. _"Once you do that, you can do whatever you want to do"_ That's a lie - _another_ lie. And you've barely started! _"That's very different from somebody who says there is no god, and I know there is no god, and no matter what you say, I'm still going to believe there is no god."_ Real atheists are very different from your _imaginary_ atheists, you mean? Yeah, reality _does_ seem to be very different from your imagination. That part of this _is_ true. _"If we had a longer time, I could lay out longer answers to all of those questions."_ Yes. And you have a girlfriend, but she lives in Canada, so we wouldn't know her, huh? :) How about a short answer to *one* question? How about *one* piece of good evidence that your god is real, rather than just imaginary? Just *one,* but specific enough and in enough detail that I can judge it for myself? Alternately, if you prefer, I'd accept *one piece of good evidence* that _any_ of the magical/supernatural stories in the Bible actually happened. Your choice. And I will _give_ you a guy named Jesus who was crucified by the Romans. _"Look at Hitler"_ More lies? Hitler was *not* an atheist, as far as we can tell. Certainly, his Nazi supporters were not atheists. They were Christians - Protestant and Catholic alike - who'd been taught antisemitism from the pulpit for generations. Heck, the German soldiers wore belt buckles with "God is with us" written on them (in German, of course). _"The more secular or the more atheistic a culture becomes, the more harmful that is for people who live in that culture"_ Heh, heh. Tell that to Europeans! _"You have to keep explaining the difference between a real Christian and someone who just pretends to be a Christian"_ I love it! Christians can't even agree with _other Christians_ about much of anything, let alone with the other faith-based people in the world, even when you're all supposedly following the same magic book supposedly provided to you by the same supposedly all-knowing deity! Your god is either the world's worst communicator or else entirely imaginary. Well, face it, religion is all about wishful-thinking, isn't it? And the faith-based want different things to be true. Worldwide, faith-based people _overwhelmingly_ believe in whatever religion and whatever god or gods they were taught to believe as children. But even _within_ the same religion, you don't all want the exact same things to be true. Well, that's why there are thousands of different denominations of Christianity even _after_ the Catholic Church spent a thousand years rooting out 'heresy' with fire and sword. OK, this is enough. It's _clearly_ not meant for skeptics. Apparently, the title was just another lie, huh?

Excellent. The Lord appeared to the people in different forms we call His Angelic forms. Exodus 20:23 We assume this was done because it is impossible to look upon the Lord in His "Father Form" (Shaddai/Almighty/שדי) or We would lose our lives. He would appear as Smoke by day fire by night, a whirlwind, an Angel with a firey sword, a pillar of fire, and sometimes looking like an ordinary man. It is important for us to learn about the "Angel of The Lord" in the bible, because Yesh/Jesus is The Angel of The Lord in the Flesh. The very meaning of "Ben Elohim" The name of Yeshua/Jesus/יש/ישוע is found all through the Old Testament (Tanakh), and His prophecied coming is shown in the bible to have existed before He formed the Judian religion and customs. In the book of Job in Chapter 33 we see that Elihu (name means "My El/Deity") speaks of and Angel named Yish/Yesh/יש who is a mediator for man and will pay the ransom and save our souls from the pit, but in English the name Yish/Yesh is translated to "There is" (obvious mistranlation) It is sad that most believers do not know that Yeshua/Jesus name is all through the old testament, and when confronted with the question they cannot answer. Even in Isaiah 56 1 it says that His "Yeshua/Jesus" is soon to be revealed and come into His righteousness. (In the original Hebrew text). We cannot seperate the Old testament (Tanakh) from Yeshua/Jesus. Jesus is the Hand of The Father that wrote the commandments on the stone. It is the reason He wrote them in the sand when they wanted to stone the woman.
