The Shahnameh, or Book of Kings, is arguably Iran’s most famous work of literature and one of the world’s greatest epic poems. It recounts tales of legendary kings and heroes, compiled from more ancient legends and was completed by Ferdowsi (d.1020) over a thousand years ago, yet it still has an enduring appeal to Iranians, and non-Iranians, around the world. Both the poetry and the way the tex...

46:53 all Iranian archeologists agree that this specific depiction is a woman and not a Eunuch. You mentioned the no bias in the dresses and the Persian language not having gendered pronouns indicates the same that Iranians never had any intention of segregating women. You are a professor of ancient Iranian history yet you mispronounced every single name in this documentary even the most famous kings Cyrus (Kurosh) and Darius (Dariush) the greats. You show photos of women in chador which in front of Persepolis to say an Iranian artist is wrong about how he depicts actual Iranian culture? Don’t you think if he was wrong his artwork wouldn’t be so popular among Iranians? Hopefully more Iranians publish about these issues with the grip of Islamic Republic loosening on our society so people like you wouldn’t represent our culture so badly mis informed.

What a beautiful , lovely horse. I was veiwing on youtube of a beautiful black, lively horse that was originally destined to slaughter! It was intercepted at Horse Plus Rescue in Tennessee, USA. It was thought to be part Freisian which caused controversy within comments. So through a DNA test it was discoved that of the 3 breeds the top breed was Caspian! Which shocked everyone! It is a beautiful horse and much taller than the the Caspian breed. I'm sure the rescue will find the right adoption person. If you want to know of this Rescue you can find it on youtube. Horse Plus Rescue video at Christmastime whe 17:34 re they rescued over 50 horses. They do mention the 2nd and 3rd breed on this site.

Mutashakiram to Prof. Ahmed and Mdm Narguess for this talk. A few things that resonated with me include; How there are more poets in Farsi/ Urdu. Its important to note that poetry is still part of daily conversation in Iran/ Pakistan/ India but this never happens in the English speaking world. Also i would love to hear Prof. Ahmed’s thoughts on the influence that farsi has had on the sub- continent where it was a court language for hundreds of years. Appreciate a reply on how to connect with you in London. Jalal Rumi

Great lecture. I became interested in wind towers upon seeing an archive documentary on tv 7 years ago. So much detail and least expected. Pity that for me the audio was a problem and detracted from the quality of the presentation. In review, I'm sure Dr Roaf has become aware that there is a technique in presentation that is just as important as anything else and will see that this deficiency in the future won't reoccur.

I have noticed something about Yazd and I hope it get more attention and more research. The windcatchers are not only a way to cool the houses. The city is one cooling system. Please pay attention that most of the houses are covered, most of the alleys and bazaars are covered. Imagine one huge covered city with hundreds and thousands of cooling vents called windcatchers. It is not only the house which gets cool and comfortable, but even if you walk in the street and bazar you are comfortable. It is one living breeding being, one body with a healthy lung.

Instead is using a contemporary fantasy painter’s work to based the ancient history of one the most powerful and amazing empires that mankind has seen. Cyrus the Great freed slaves. There were no veiled women rather women were not only equal to men but also hold high ranking positions in the government. The whole idea in this lecture should have separated the current politics of Iran like veil from the glorious ancient Persia. Thanks.
