    This ruined my life… my parents treated me like a dog because I was diagnosed with ODD by THEM not a doctor and when I did go to therapy they didn’t help at all they just made it worse by giving my parents advice that hurt me… they read a book about it and made me read it three times and always made sure to remind me that that was me… at one point my dads girlfriend said I was worth less than her dog… I was not viewed as a child it that house I was instead treated like a simple roach and wasn’t treated like how I should’ve been

    An expert once said that the distinguishing characteristic between ADHD and ODD is friends…ADHD has several and people like being around them in general. ODD don’t have friends because they piss everyone off in every situation and struggle to even function as an adult.

    Diagnose a new disorder to cover for poor parenting. Just love your children, respect your spouse and be consistent with punishments. Along with interviewing teachers before exposing your child to harmful ideologies.

    While disorders and a child’s emotions do matter, I think too many parents are concerned with giving their child what they didn’t have and spoiling them instead of actually preparing their child for the real world.

    Apparently, I have ODD. I tend to be more argumentative and corrective, but I don't believe that I simply reject others thoughts and opinions. I do, however, hate when people just want to "let it go" and "move on" without anything close to a conclusion or reasonable compromise. The biggest reason is because every time I have attempted to "just let them be wrong," it always gets worse later down the line. It feels like my habit of arguing for my thoughts more than others is used as an excuse to dismiss any points I try to make. I will go over the logic in my head relentlessly, constantly paranoid that maybe I am wrong. When you're told that it's not important, or that whatever you're talking about doesn't really matter, you might start aggressively checking yourself too. It feels uncomfortable to think about people being unwilling to see my points as important simply because they seem inconsequential to them. Sorry for the long comment, it has Not been a great day.

  • @aristotlerye9033
    @aristotlerye9033 Před měsícem

    I've been diagnosed with ODD since I was a child. Always thought it was bull, since all the information I read about was always about "how to deal" with us. Especially when adults would refuse to explain why I was wrong in arguments. I, a child, would do my best to put a logical, sound argument foward, and was usually just told to "let it go" or that "it wasn't really that important." Felt like a slap in face, still does. People still tell me to let things go, but if they really had empathy, I thought maybe they'd see that the things I argue about were important to me. Because I feel the need to correct/argue more often, that suddenly nullifies any effort I put into the conversation. Sorry for the word splatter, but I found this video while not doing so great after *another* argument.

    The mother of all ODDs are the parents. ODD doesn't happen overnight. Train a child as early as 0.

    This country (USA) has no support for children and people with this disorder. Parents and teachers receive no support, and when they're adults the police will not care. Then this country locks then up, thats how this country deals with this.

    What an absolutely terrible video. What a way of pathologising a neurological difference. Also, please stop showing children as if they were the only autistic human beings; those children become adults (children do grow up if you hadn’t noticed). Stop the stereotype. It’s just sickening to hear the language deployed in this video, repeating words and phrases such as ‘suffering from’, ‘cure’, etc. Autism is NOT a disease, stop using the language of deficiency and start using the language of difference. Stop talking how we, autistic people, are the only ones who to make changes and adapt to whatever society has decided is ‘normal’. Btw, what I’m saying here is not at all about political correctness, or policing language; this is about using language that describes reality accurately. This video is sooooo unhelpful, just spreading fear about autism, shame on you!

    I've wondered about whether or not I have this. I'm not the type to be openly hostile to people, but anytime someone tells me to do something, or even implies that they EXPECT me to do a particular thing, I get an _overwhelming_ urge to do the opposite; even when it makes my life harder. It's not ever meant to be malicious; I just have a strong instinct towards subverting people's expectations of me. I loathe the idea of being 'predictable'; I don't even know why, I just do. I don't want anyone to make any _assumptions_ about what I'm thinking, what I'm going to do, etc. So I keep'em guessing. Not saying it's a good thing at all; Ive definitely missed out on a lot of opportunities to get ahead, establish friendships, and maybe even romantic relationships because I just refuse to do the things people want me to do.

    Communication and getting help would be helpful but those with ODD will not do anything you want. Communication will not work because they will always try to argue, that's the nature of this disorder. I think you might want to refine these two points.

    • @thrivingwithrichardbass
      @thrivingwithrichardbass Před měsícem

      Hello, I understand that interacting with individuals who have Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) can be challenging, as they often seem inclined to argue. However, it is important to approach these interactions with patience and understanding. Research shows that active listening and withholding judgment can significantly improve communication outcomes. Studies have demonstrated that individuals with ODD feel more validated and less defensive when they perceive they are being genuinely heard. For instance, a study published in the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology found that when caregivers used active listening techniques, children with ODD exhibited fewer defiant behaviors over time (Greene & Doyle, 1999). Another study highlighted that empathetic communication can reduce oppositional behaviors by making the individual feel understood and respected (Kazdin, 2005). By practicing active listening and refraining from immediate judgment, you create a supportive environment that encourages openness. This approach can lead to more constructive discussions and potentially improve the individual's willingness to engage positively in the future.

      @happygolucky9004 Před měsícem

      @@thrivingwithrichardbass I appreciate the response, however, I disagree with you. The study you are citing is on children with ODD. Those techniques are found to be effective in young children but not adults. The treatments and techniques for ODD are different from children to adolescence and even more different for adults.

    I was married to someone with symptoms or either narcissisism or ODD and some of these steps and advice are not safe. Especially if the person is escalating and refuses to listen to reason. I tried couples counseling and it went south fast. I tried empathy, he only got more defiant and argumentative.

    Well, this obviously isn't a video done by an autistic person. Maybe it's not a disorder. Maybe it's a different personality type, and a different way of processing information and the brain works differently. This was NEVER an issue before modern times. The world is a bit insane now, and too fast and noise everywhere, and you have to know the social game to get a job. And everybody lies, it's socially acceptable now. Autistic people don't understand deception, so things don't go well for them in a society like ours. Autistic people have always been around, it was never an issue before modern times. And I don't know of any autistic person who thinks they need to be "cured".

    If a person has cancer, do we blame the doctor, or do we support, listen, ask questions and work together with the doctor for the solution or do we blame the doctor for his or her focused and skilled determination to help? This video would seem to say that the child is the victim of the doctor, that the unfortunate circumstances and defiant and assulting and damaging behavior is almost diserved and no responsibility is ever to be placed with the person providing it. Lets start addressing the situation, calling the behaviors what they are, and start helping not hurting the doctor. - a survivor of childhood trauma.
