Keep Track of Settings: Embed Parameters in Houdini Simulations & Playblasts - A Complete Guide
This video is all about keeping better track of your parameter settings in Houdini. Learn how to embed your parameter settings into both your simulations and playblasts, making it easier to switch between settings across different versions. Embedding your parameter data into your simulations ensures consistency and peace of mind, allowing you to confirm that your Houdini scene matches your sim and make adjustments as needed.

Great, thank you, I think it's better to use this with overlay tops node, more control on placement and font and no need for rendering cam safe area
Great point! I actually forgot about tops for this. I'll look into it and see. I'll have to convert my flipbook shelf tool into tops as well since I use shelf tool to write out my playblasts.
With your method, would you need to export out two sets of images? One that's playblast and one that has the overlay?
Thank you for showing me Snippets. So happy.
Happy to help!
SUPER useful. My first thought here was: @f will be scaling the breakthreshold... Didn't know about the broken group. 😍
Favourite new Houdini channel, thanks so much for your work. Highly appreciated and looking forward to more. No bullshit, just wisdom. 👏
Thanks a lot! Yeah I'm thinking of teaching a bit more vex and maybe even python for future videos. Any specific content you want to see more of?
@@TyHoudinifx Practical VEX would be amazing. And MPM. How to really control it. 😍
@@philippwelsing9108 Awesome thanks for feedback. I haven't played with MPM at all, but when I do I might do tutorial. Sounds good I'll do tutorial on vex stuff soon. Thanks again.
Wow! Special respect for hpaste ❤🔥
Hi Ty, but in vop there isnt a UVSAMPLE node, right ? i use a snippep with the uv sample function.
Hi, I couldn't find it. I think that's the way to go. With the snippet in the vop. I guess that's one of the functions that's not in vop land.
@@TyHoudinifx yo. thanks. i thinks too there isnt a twin function in vop
Well done as always, T. Money!!!!
Thanks! I hope you are well.
Nice!
Thanks for the tutorial! Under the 'Breaking' tab, you can set it to scale by attribute and use @f there. No need for the workaround. I also like this for pinning, saves you a few nodes: i@group_pin = neighbourcount(0, @ptnum)==1;
Thanks for the feedback. Wouldn't I need to fit the f to a different value since the threshold being as f would make everything break all at once? I just tried it and everything breaks all at once. Cool about the neighbourcount tip! Thanks a lot!
@@TyHoudinifx I'm pretty sure the float value is used as a multiplier for the chosen attribute, but I might be wrong here.
@khomatech6428 Makes sense. Looks like I still have to use popwrangle to bring attribute in because it doesn't seem to bring in animation from sops. Oh well, it was a nice idea. Here's my file in case you want to take a look and fix: qihomulifi@HPaste I'm always open to learning new ways of doing things and if I can avoid this craziness I will in a heartbeat.
oh my, amazing. this tutorial fixed my life
Glad it helped!
Yeay i found my new fav houdini channel
Thanks so much! Makes me very happy to hear that
Thank you, why uv is a vector 3 attribute?
The uv is technically 3 components. UVW. Honestly, I'm not too sure what the w is. The u is 'left right' component, v is 'up and down' according to the uv view editor. w, however, I'm not so sure. Perhaps the "depth" of how the uvs are projecting? I'm noticing that a grid has a w value of 0.5 and a sphere with uv project has a w of much more varying numbers. Our main concern especailly for primuv() functions and such is just the u and v component since that tells us where it is on the primitive. Usually you only have to worry aboutt the u and v component as far as I know. Thanks your question and hopefully I somewhat answered it.
I've been wanting to learn this for a while. Very helpful. Thanks so much!
You're very welcome! Glad it was helpful!

thx very nice!
This was incredibly helpful, especially when you were live updating attributes, it helped me grasp a more what each attribute was doing!
That's awesome! Glad it was helpful! I plan on making more tutorials like it.
Hey , this was great m8. ... very concise
Thanks for the History addition!

You're welcome!
Do you think its possible with this setup to have the bottle break at a certain point? The collision had to change...
Hi thanks for the reply. I apologize for not getting back to you sooner as I didn't see this reply. Yes, and it would depend how the water leaked out. If it leaked out slowly after an initial crack that I feel would be harder to accomplish than a bursting all at once. If it bursts all at once you could force all points to be in the !bottle group and it should be that simple. Check the description of the video for the velocity update I show to show how to get correct velocities. If you need more help I can certainly talk to you more about it. Just DM me or reply with any questions.
After fully completing this I have to say this is pretty cool! Thanks again for sharing it. As I said... without the hip file it was a bit difficult here and there. Also because the presentation could be a bit more organized. But all in all great stuff and really insightful!
Glad you found it helpful. I'll keep your comments in mind in the future and not use the tool in the future as I see now that it adds confusion. Thanks for your feedback.
You are amazing!
Thanks a lot, very very helpful!
i would have a much easier time flowing this tutorial if you didn't use these node presets, i don't know how you set up your presets and you are going too fast if the hip file was available that would help, but a hip file kinda of defeats the point of a tutorial when following a tutorial i need some kind of basic explanation on what I'm doing, if not it's just a game of see alt-tab and repeat and then figure out what's going on please don't see this as hate and harsh criticism, I'm just giving you my feedback based on my point of view
Thanks a lot for your feedback! This is great. I'll provide the hip file when I get home tonight. I'll keep this in mind for future tutorials. My goal for using the presets was I didn't want to waste time building the same systems we have seen over and over again in countless tutorials and waste users time.
You can also download the tool I used for free with all the presets I used and more. Link is in description. The tutorial is designed to uplift the tool in a way showing how you can use it in production.
Here is the hipfile. tinyurl.com/houdiniFlipTutorial
Same goes for me. First time you dropped the RBD Nodes with a Preset I was feeling a bit frustrated. Even though it does not seem that hard to follow it takes a lot more energy to make sure your doing the same thing as you. Great that you share your file though! Thanks a lot!

Thank you!
Your welcome!
Thanks.. I'm checking it out now
Thanks!!! really helpful!
Thank you!
Congrats for the tutorial very nice! But i have a problem with collision, my flip doesnt work the same yours, my flip is gone to base of bottle, and is gone.
Hi @spiderbrr, there's a series of things that contribute to that problem but typically it's because there isn't enough 'volume' or 'pressure' to keep the particles afloat. It would be best to see a hipfile if you can host it on google drive and I can take a look for you. Usually you need to adjust the amount of particles in your simulation, perhaps it's not enough. You can also adjust the radius scale as this will allow particles to collide sooner when falling and not lose volume.
Awesome! Thank you!
You're welcome!
This is great tool! Thank you!
Thanks so much!
