    • @JaniVMD

    • @krazykara1327
      @krazykara1327 Před 4 měsíci

      @JaniVMD can you write in brief please the timeline? So four years bsc, then 4 years medical school and you'll need to take loans or scholarships, then how many years residency or fellowship? I don't know the difference? Given the residency income like u stated was almost $50000 for three years? So after 11-12 years you immediately start earning $180-300??? With the insurance being deducted and taxes etc is it all worth it vs having a bsc in computer science and starting at lets say $80000/year? Appreciate your opinion.

    • @JaniVMD
      @JaniVMD Před 4 měsíci

      @@krazykara1327 residency is anywhere from 3-6 years on average depending on specialties. The comparison is hard to make because it will be personal. If you want to have more earning years then not going for medical training makes sense. I would not look at going into medicine for the money.

    • @krazykara1327
      @krazykara1327 Před 4 měsíci

      @JaniVMD first, thx for getting back to me. Second, what do you mean if not looking to earn more then don't go for medical training? Isn't that compulsary?? If it's not, then what are the career choices from there after 4years bsc and 4 years medical school only? I understand the goal is not the money and got to have the passion and desire etc.. this comes at a price though which needs to be known ahead of time with the end goal in mind. Really appreciate your video. Waiting your reply.

    Medical procedures are way too costly, so can I assume that drs get a good chunk of money from those treatments/surgeries??

    • @JaniVMD
      @JaniVMD Před 3 lety

      Not really. Most of the cost of procedures goes to the hospital or institution as well as insurance. Doctors don’t usually get earnings from procedures, they get paid after the fact with the remainder after all other costs are covered. For example: if you get an MRI that cost 10k, probably more than 90% of that goes to the hospital or center from there they pay their bills, they cover the cost of the contrast, they pay the techs and staff that run the machine, and the. They pay the radiologist who reads it. Same for a surgery like a cesarean section: if you get a surgery that costs 5k the first thing is the hospital or surgery center takes their take which is most of that, from there they cover their expenses, equipment, cleaning of the instruments, they pay the nurses that took care of you, and the obgy gets maybe 500-1000 from that if they are employed by the hospital. If they are working through a practice the. The practice takes their part from the physicians cut and then they get paid. This is a very simple way to explain that. But this article goes more into how the system actually works: www.forbes.com/sites/jeffgorke/2019/02/25/my-doctor-makes-what-how-physicians-are-paid/?sh=1973f2b51913

    Reasoning behind making payments on student loans while in residency?

    • @JaniVMD
      @JaniVMD Před 3 lety

      The biggest reason is to pay off the accrued interest you have so that when payments resume your balance doesn’t keep increasing. You also may be able to pay off smaller balance loans during this time. That for me was also the highest interest. This is more on if you plan on paying off your loans rather than if you plan on doing pslf for sure.

    It's a lot of debt but medicine attending salaries (at least in the US) will support it. Opportunity cost of medicine is huge and when people say don't do medicine for the money - they are not lying. Awesome of you to share this and being real with people. Good luck with your residency.

    • @JaniVMD
      @JaniVMD Před 3 lety

      You would be surprised at how many “attendings” are living paycheck to paycheck. People in medicine dont know how to handle money after being broke for so long. Then they undergo massive lifestyle inflation and forget to pay off those loans and then find themselves in a corner. But by sharing all of this I hope to inspire others to make better decisions when it comes to money and finances.
