Really appreciate his first draft process. Tapping into the subconscious to get the emotion on the page before outlining into a more structured film.
7:55 I think pitching like that privately is really useful so you can have a space to put your work in progress up in a way that probes you work on and re-examine it... But I watched him doing the pitch for "The Entertainment System is Down" and now I'm pretty sure the movie will have at least 50% less of an impact on me.
Gain the world n lose your soul ❤
It’s kinda cute that he used an iPad to type up the novel
I love the questions❤
Thank you for this!

Чёртова еврейская лесбиянка Тали Шалом не знающая мировой истории.
Спасибо, потрясающее интервью!
Thank you for this interview, this is awesome content. I loved the first season so much I ended up getting all three books as an audiobook and listened to the entire incredible story line in a month. I really appreciate David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo for introducing me to Cixin Liu's brilliant work. I can't wait for Season 2. :)
The idea was informed via working a door Factory job, not telemarketing, AP programming…that kinda thing? Are Dan Ericsson’s other ideas consistent with someone who can invent a reward day of supposedly fun tightly controlled group work activities like the music dance experience involving defiant jazz (all while half asleep)? Did Dan’s have an idea grabbing team lead who drived an Audi, because that would help explain his stream of consciousness writing process? Why does he have to check the math for the timeline on something he personally conceived of and wrote? Why can’t he remember the first draft? Does he seem a bit nervous talking about the concepts? Would adding an inspired by credit help reduce interview flop sweat levels when discussing the inspiration for a hit show? A show credit and a pocket full of bitcoins could go a long way to release the muse…without hiring a rescue team of writers. Has Dan Ericsson ever read an idle man telemarketing script over and over and over completely with cheesy transitions? Would someone keep casting the ‘got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell’ guy (irrespective of fit) just because he realized its happening again and to see if he can get still get away with making casting demands in 2015? ‘Doesn’t matter, do your job, don’t rewrite gold shits’ is great guidance…’we think someone should do it’ also was. Perhaps these questions will never be answered. Pity.
I don’t know if jay was his real name…but that d00d at least supplied free recreational marajuana….
Did dan’s best friend call him his ‘really good friend’ (i hope so, because he could relate to the park and rec guy…’the one with good hair’)
Side note->:I’m not sure if it was his real name but that Jay guy at least supplied free recreational marijuana.
I saw twice very emotionally and very hard to watch!! Thanks for bringing the story to life on the screen ❤
Cilka's journey and 3 sisters we want that synchronicity films do it !!
I intentionally leave this comment just so you would know, that despite of underperformance of this youtube channel, podcasts you keep posting on your website are pure gold. gonna watch it here, then gonna listen to Late Night with the Devil on website. keep up the good work. it was nothing but inspiration even when there wasn't that much to insipe
Fascinating interview, thank you.
The interviewer is talking too much. Ask a concise question and let the person speak. We want to hear what Dan Erickson has to say.
Can’t wait to watch this one! Such a thoughtful and compelling filmmaker
I saw BODIES BODIES BODIES a year and a half after its release. How I wish I had seen it at the cinema! It's so fresh and fun, and I've seen it two more times since. Can't wait to see what Halina Reijin, AKA the female Paul Verhoeven, directs next!
Any Final draft promo codes ??
Brilliant interview! And the edit you did made it efficient and flow really well - I appreciate that!
This was great. Thanks for uploading. Please do more rountables in the future!
I love this interview, I love how you asked about Dan's writing process and if he had writing exercises and things like that that he would do to inspire himself. I love to learn stuff like this and people rarely ask about the hard work that does into the creative aspects of making a show or movie. Thank you!
OMG the Graner's tooth storyline!! That's so shocking but as Dan said, seems like it would have happened in an another development of the show. It seems like Dan Erickson and Ben Stiller are a good match-up in terms of balancing the creative weirdness and also the grounding to aid the suspension of disbelief!
TREMENDOUS INTERVIEW. WONDERFUL QUESTIONS AND KNOWLEDGE OF THE SHOW. GREAT CHEMISTRY
Super interesting conversation
I didn't go to the first couple of years pf these, but I think starting with the 3rd I attended all of them until the pandemic turned it into a virtual thing. It was always one of my favorite programs of the year along with the Osar Shorts screening and Q&A the Academy used to do.
Thank you for this video! It's a joy to watch and listen to the Oscar Screenwriting Nominees each year.
Jeff G. Best interviewer EVAH!
As a fan from the first in-person screenings to the first panel, thank you for doing these.
Thank you for this interview! It's so great to hear Amelie is getting a re-release. I own it on physical media, but would love to see it on the big screen for the first time.
Underrated interview! I've liatened to a dozen or so podcasts and interviews about Severence back to back and this one was so enjoyable and thorough! The pacing and flow of conversation felt so natural and researched without seeming recited. Thank you so much for hosting and posting!
It was an amazing movie, but one scene i really hate was Tangerine's death.
Nobody thinks its weird Josh Stolberg has a severed head on his desk?😲
This is his best (most precise) film in my opinion. Hypnosis is the recurring theme here. There are a lot of important details that you can mistake for imperfections due to the video quality. One cue is the scene of misunderstanding between the director and Bucky J played by David Lynch. There is a squeal of the door as the old witch enters the house and says hello. A bird flies right above as Nikki enters the studios. And so on and so on. BTW I hated it the first time I saw it.
Dude, you're amazing. And thnx to Mr. Sorkin. How can you invite all this famous people to your small channel?
What's up with all the quick fade-ins, fade-outs? Very annoying.
Great interview.
@15:52 we never got to hear those two horror ideas since you interrupted her interviewer :(
Great movie!!!! Thank you for this!!!
Love the podcast Jeff - just finished the QT interview and I've now orderded the hardcover version of the OUATIH book. Also read the free ipad issue of Backstory - so many cool indepth articles. Thankfully I'm fed up with the PR glossy fluff we get with virtually all movie magazines. I stopped buying those years ago. Will be subscribing soon...
Cooool
The point from this film is Rebecca Ferguson's Ilsa Faust character is dead and becoming a corpse on the Venice bridge
Bot
Jeff, are you going to continue doing he in-person screenings and interviews like we had back in the old days pre-covid?
Excellent. This needs more views! Loved the movie since renting it way back in 1988!
Bozeman and Stallberg?
This is a great way to understand the 'backstory' to this film; or how it all came about. Very inspiring to indie film-makers. 👍
Might buy this film. It is violent film?
A bit.
lots of blood packs, but silly really
Hi Jeff... Thanks for thisss... Very helpful... Please get James Gunn too... What he's done with GOTG 3 is remarkable. Would be interesting to see you dissect his creative process! :)
Jeff, thank you so much for these podcasts man! What a beautiful source that dives deep into the minds and the processes of the writers. Keep up the good work :)
I feel Casian is figuring out one more thing - his running away has become a catalyst that increased the danger of the lives of people he loves. He either has to die or defeat the Empire to save them.
