No steps to hell, medieval well.
An amazing castle and I’m due another trip over there.
Very interesting - I did however think we were going to see inside the chapel, but alas not. Many thanks for the video though, very informative.
Many many years ago I attended Hawthornden primary School. In nearby Bonnyrigg.
Thank yu i really enjoy this video.

Amazing !!!
I grew up near Cramond Brig, on the edge of Dalmeny estate. The river Almond and Cramond were my childhood playground.
A beautiful place!
Nicely shot video!
Thank you for sharing my ancestors history. I definitely would love to sit down and have a chat to know more history on the crawford family:)
30 years ago there was a large tree across the river you could use as a bridge and it was an easy scramble up to the cave. there are a few caves under Hawthornden castle that are barred off with iron bars. idk if you were low enough to see them
nice
Terrific video. I spent a month as a writer in residence at this magnificent castle in September 2001 (the month the Twin Towers in New York were attacked. The castle and the surrounding area have a fascinating history and there are many interesting and beautiful walks. Deer, foxes and, of course, rabbits are commonly spotted. Oddly this area doesn’t attract many tourists but it is really worth visiting.
Thanks for a lovely wander - for anyone thinking of going, it's quite worth staying a day or two in the castle. I did so with my brother and my mom and dad for a couple of nights some years back before the Da Vinci movie was made. It's lovely inside, and worth it just for the chance to wander about in the old abandoned parts of the castle under the rooms. Quite spooky!

Nice vid mate, never heard of this place before, feel a bit conned by being clickbaited on this vid and seeing a not that fat guy and no kilt!.... I was expecting somebody like "Fat B" out of Austin Powers ;-) I reckon you could make a funny wee no context "Short" of yer pal eating his coffee cake)
So many childhood memories came flooding back, (1950s & 1960s) when watching this superb production. Great job, thank you so much for this wonderful, historical, visual feast.
Thankyou for this video, may I suggest you look at paul cook's you tube channel. He has found many "caves" just like the one in your video often with incredible geometric designs moulded into the structure. All of them are equally inaccessible & purposely hidden. He has some fascinating ideas of how they came to be which I agree with from my own research. Great video
Wow! now I've definitely got to see more of that Hawthornden Castle!! 👍
I've seen many videos of that path to the castle but this is the first time I've seen it snow! Enjoyed your adventure! 👍
Thanks Stephen, quality content. Enjoyed the watch of the Old Gunpowder Mill. Great Site indeed. Regards sent from East Dunbartonshire. Cheers 👍
I'm just a Brtisih Mutt with just 1/8th Scots included, but I just love to follow these stories of rebellion & fierce battles - totally understand why you have to stand up for your lands else the powerful will happily remove you from them - it's the story of everywhere really. The scots have always seemed to me to be among the most proud of their ancient heritage ! Thank you for this great video, and a little glimpse into a piece of Scots history, that cave is amazing, how many different groups have spent time in there over thousands of years I wonder - has there been any archaeology done in that cave - Pictish symbols tell the story of one group right there as evidence - wonderful !
Apparently they made him look better looking than what the portraits and sculptures portray
I spent my childhood in cramound thank you for memory's long time ago 1960s

154 A.D. You're a Batavian auxiliary soldier originally from modern Netherlands. You've just finished your eight-hour guard duty shift at 1400 hours, that is, 2:00 pm. The rest of the day and night are yours. You report back on guard duty the next day at 0600 hours. You struggle to control your shivering. You've stood on that miserable turf and wood wall for eight excruciating hours in freezing cold, winds, sleet rain, fortunately it didn't rain for all eight hours. Wearing double woolen cloaks didn't keep out all the cold and wet. You worry about getting sick from this hellish Scottish cold and wet weather, which seems to last all year except for one month of fair weather and two following months of decent warm weather. After being relieved, you hurry down the ladder and make haste to your contubernium quarters. It seems to take forever. Oh why, oh why are your contubernium squad quarters located so far away from your post? You finally arrive at your quarters, virtually throwing open the door into the outer room which houses the squad members' equipment and arms. Throwing off your wet cloaks, you hang them on wall wood pegs. Your simple bronze Coolus helmet and spatha sword hang on the next two wood pegs. Good fortune brought a new local commander who allows the guards to keep their armor back in the quarters since it is peacetime, relatively so, despite repeated incidents at the Antonine Wall. The native Caledonians and Picts were never happy from day one over the new northern wall cutting directly across their tribal lands. Increasingly the natives are demonstrating their displeasure with small raids, incursions, and incidents at the wall. Body armor has to be worn when venturing outside the wall or whether on training exercises. For now, the wall guards get a break. But everything else has to be worn: helmet, scutum shield, spatha or gladius sword, pugio dagger, and hasta spear. Woolen cloaks with hoods are worn all year. Even in the midst of summer it can be chilly at night with cool winds blowing off the Scottish highland glens and valleys. The outer room leads directly into the inner room, the walls lined with bunks for eight men. The bunk nearest the small fireplace is reserved for the decanus, the squad leader, usually the man with the most years of military service under his belt, making him the most experienced and thus qualified for the position of contubernium squad leader. Only two contubernium members are inside sitting on wood stools at the table in the room center. The others are either still out on guard duty, assigned to fatigue duties, or probably on their way back to the squad room. You and the two squad members greet each other perfunctorily. The two squad members go back to their conversation. You stand in front of the small hearth, still shaking, but completely glad of its warmth. Standing before the fireplace, you peel off your damp wool tunic and pantalone long wool pants, hanging the clothing on the wood post corner of your bunk. You quickly pull on your spare, dry wool tunic and pantalones. Strolling quickly out the door, you mutter loudly, "bathhouse". Your two comrades let out a quick acknowledgement. Grabbing the driest of your two cloaks, the inner one, you wrap it about your shoulders as you walk out the door. The only thing on your mind right now is getting warm again and that happens only at the bathhouse. After that a warm supper meal of wheat porridge, bread, hard cheese, a mug of malt beer, then some conversation and perhaps board games with some of the squad members then into a warm bunk bed before starting the routine over again in the morning.
Nice to see the cave free of graffiti and litter. I have many memories as a kid exploring the area where I grew up.
I really enjoyed that. I'm glad you showed me Wallace's Cave. I had intended on visiting it this year but after seeing that I'm not going to as i really don't like heights and steep slopes. It looks like a very interesting place, so thanks again.
Great video. It would be awesome if somebody would take scuba gear and see what is under the water in that staircase tunnel.
Me & my husband live not far an went a walk there a few years ago in summer...it had hundreds of crows flying about above in a circle the noise was awful it felt very unnerving and eerie...so we left an even as we walked up the golf coarse back near the stables crows still where flying above the trees in a circle 😳
And story is the underneath an evil wizard stayed who done all kinda bad stuff an had a goblin army.. how it goes around these parts like.
I would love to know more about what the locals think of yester castle, I'm canadian and recently learned about the castle and Gifford.
Thank you so much!!!!
I lived in Edinburgh ages ago but missed that area. I'd heard of Calton Hill but never explored it. So thank you! I enjoy all your videos.
Fascinating ... I'm Australian but my ancestors lived in Cramond in the late 1700s to 1800s. My ancestor Cecilia Wishart is buried in the Kirk graveyard along with some of her descendants.
the door on the left?
The arches in the ha' are beautiful.
I lived in Edinburgh many years ago and remember the statue and the story of Greyfriars' Bobbie. Also the setting in Edinburgh of The Prime of Miss Jean Brody, also parts of Chariots of Fire. Thank you. I like all your videos.
Silly ideas that some ground is consecrated/other ground isn't and that dogs can't be buried in "consecrated" ground!
Fascinating indeed! Thank you!👍
I want to now how they built these places back in the day!?
Just home from Edinburgh. had no idea re ths area....next time!!!!!
8:55 "used to be a well down the bottom" 9:11 "it's full of water" How unexpected, a well full of water! Great vid guys, now I want to visit the place. Bit of ambient dungeon sound and some flaming torches and that would be perfect!
Great watch it was Gentlemen, thanks & best wishes as you move forwards. Regards from East Dunbartonshire.
Thank you ✋😊
Is that a coin no it's crap
Yes I think the coin was planted there. Definitely not genuine
That cave is amazing!😁☺️🏴🇨🇮
Spent a happy childhood down there and camping on Cramond Island. James V father of Mary Queen of Scots
No one can do a 'legend' and keep it going like the Scots and despite this story having been largely debunked in recent years, not least by the discovery that 'Bobby' was at least two dogs, that's no obstacle - and who can blame them - acknowledging this would be like killing the goose that laid the golden egg; akin to admitting the Loch Ness Monster doesn't exist. Bobby has done for Scottish tourism and the economy what Elvis has done in the US. Those 150th anniversary celebrations will no doubt currently be in full swing..Long live Bobby!
I live in Rosewell and would love to visit Wallace's Cave and Hawthornden Castle but I don't know if the arthritic knees would cope and I wouldn't risk going on my own. Do you ever organise tours to the cave?
Hi Helen, I could take you down later in the year. I’m booked out for months in advance. I know an easy way to get in that won’t hurt your knees

@@FATLADINAKILT Hi, are you still able to take me? Thanks.
Spent a few cold drunken nights in that cave with friends during a misspent youth. It's only 10 mins up the road from me. Hawthornden Castle is an interesting building for sure as well. Great video well done
