    Omg i love that people are finding mor eande more uses for these old motherboards instead of tossing them, by the way throughout my hour or research one day found that the ssd you got is like the absolute best from reliably and price standpoint, one of the best wd black drives is sn850x but the 770 is almost identical just slower lol but half a gig per seconds transfers is still supper fast

    Great project. You don’t appear to have pull up/down resistors on your logic outputs from arduino. This would be why you are having interference issues where your opto isolators didn’t help.

  • @dosgos
    @dosgos Před 6 dny

    Incredible concept. A few ideas to consider for v2. 1. Try moving the ports backwards so the wires don't bother you when typing. 2. Apple keeps the speakers in sealed ports, firing upwards for good sound. 3. Track balls can be finnicky; you might be able to squeeze in a slightly bigger one moving the board. 4. Consider a few air intake ducts (boost cooling efficiency and reduce fan sound). 5. File down the alu screen bezel to remove friction before it kills the hinge 6. Use loc-tite on hinge bolts (be careful using it on plastics). 7. Touchscreen would be ultimate flex but I don't know if it would be useful in practice, maybe with a stylus.

    • @benmakeseverything
      @benmakeseverything Před 6 dny

      This cost me somewhere around $1000 but most of the parts were bought in 2020, so it may be a bit more now. Obviously that is cheaper than anything of similar size/capability commercially available, but it was a lot of work and required me to learn a lot of things in order to get it working.

  • @pimplefacedprick2595

    If you get a freeware software called "Volumouse" you can add scroll to the trackball. Really that will give the ability to control just about anything and everything with the track ball. It's simple but useful.

    I am an engineer (electronics) and I would not attempt such a project as you have. I have to say, though you're not an "engineer", you are in fact what an engineer is. That you have been successful is a reflection of your careful and studied approach to such a monumental project, weighing the pros and cons and tradeoffs to each decision. That is to a great deal what real engineering involves. You mention in your video that it took you almost 1 year to complete your project. I can appreciate the time involved. Complex projects do take time and usually more than we initially realize. One thing I would have asked myself considering such a project as yours is whether it would be cost-effective for me to spend the time and money and do the entire job myself vs. purchasing a pre-built CNC. There are advantages and tradeoffs to both approaches of course. With your approach you learned things that someone purchasing a CNC would likely not learn. And of course, building it yourself gives you the unique feeling of satisfaction that one does not get from purchasing a similar CNC. That you built it yourself also gives you the ability to repair and/or modify your machine in ways that one ordinarily would not be able to do. On the other hand, purchasing a CNC allows you to get to the job(s) at hand almost immediately. Those are just some of the tradeoffs with building it yourself vs purchasing. In any case, your results are quite remarkable. You might consider offering your CNC as a kit; I'm sure it will sell. Of course, putting together a kit and making it into a money-making proposition is a completely different kind of challenge. But considering your excellent approach I think you'd be equally successful. Unless I missed it, one thing you don't mention in the video is the resolution in the X, Y, and Z axis - something that would be of interest to others. Best of luck with your future projects and congratulations on a very impressive result!

    Silly boy. The laser driver is meant to be ON permanently. There are separate PWM pins for controlling the laser duty cycle. Just turning the module on and off will result in the issue you had. In other words, it is not a hardware error - it is a wetware error.
