HOW TO FIX A LEAKING SHIMANO BRAKE LEVER

This video shows how to fix leaking problem on a M9000 brake lever, the problem is the piston inside, I am pretty sure most if not all shimano brake levers use the same piston, I am pretty sure this will work on m7000 m8000 m9000 and m785 series as well but I am not totally sure on the m7100 m8100 and m9100 series, they are the newest series and I cannot find info on the piston size but I heard...

2004 RX8 Fuel Pump Removal DIY Part 1
Excellent tutorial! The 9000 series levers apparently use a slightly different sized piston. You can view this user's experience here czcams.com/video/yoHH7qV3dIc/video.html
Thanks for letting me know! I made a mistake in my description by saying it works with m9100, I actually meant m9020, cheers
Will this work on low end Mt 200? Great instructions!
This o-ring should be FKM material or it doesn't matter?
from my experience when I tried cheap black o-rings that came in my big cheap o-ring kit they didn't last as long as these brown FKM ones I ordered, FKM shouldn't matter I think it mostly comes down to the quality of the o-ring but it is possible the FKM o-rings keep their size better in the mineral oil
@@MTBfixHQ I mostly find NBR material in my country. And I don't want to try many o-rings cause I have m820 brakes and they're pain to remove that pin if you know what I'm talking about. You believe NBR material is fine?
thank you....just did this...works great.
Is there any way of seeing how much calories did i burn? On the computer or maybe on the xoss app?😊
To be honest I don't remember and I gave the computer to my friend, I would imagine the XOSS app would show this information and if it does not I know strava will show this information for sure :) cheers
Followed step by step. The dropper now runs smoothly. But now i have slight squeak noise when its at the lowest point and starts to go up. Any ideas what this could be?
Can you do this on xtr m9120?
Hi, yes it should work with all M6000-M9000 series brakes, cheers
Shimano 9120, like the vast majority of Shimano brakes, has a servo wave system, so there are several plastic parts before the piston, which should be carefully disassembled so as not to break.
Thanks for this! Which one has the tallest toe box?
I do not own the regular freerider and returned them, but from my memory the regular freerider should have more toe room because its more flexible with less toe protection, cheers
How do you get the pins all the way in? I can move the pins only out.
I am not totally sure what you mean, are you talking about pushing the bushing out? if so it is a little tricky but you need to put a little curve on the end of the pin and keep trying, it will eventually push out
@@MTBfixHQ 😄 I’m referring to the pins on the surface of the pedal. At the beginning you mention that you moved them in because you don’t need that much traction. But as I try to to screw them in, that does not work. It’s like the pins have reached the end. Did you use shorter pins?
Hello, will this work on a deore bl-m6100?
Hi, Yes it should use the same piston, Cheers
@@MTBfixHQThanks!
I hava a 210 loosing pressure, any tips ?
sorry from my understanding the cartridge is not serviceable and if you are losing air you need to replace the cartridge
Bro you put in all that work just to end up right where you started
Don't know why you say that... the holes got filled so dirt no longer gets into the fork, the fork is still running great and no debris inside when I service it, also it took me about 2-3 full minutes of work lol
@@MTBfixHQ I see the point of @goombek1861 ... it looks just the same as before. how come the black nail polish is not black in the grove?
Hi, would be working with SLX m675?
from my understanding it should work
do you have any issue on gps cgnal? when i try outside open area and still no cgnal on screen
As I states in the video the only time I had a problem connecting to GPS and sensors was because of the phone app running in the background, make sure the xoss app is not running in the background on your phone and try again, if it still does not connect I am not sure what to tell ya, I actually have not used mine since making this video so I cannot comment on how good the GPS works but I did about 5 rides with it and the GPS was exactly the same as my garmin edge 130. If it still has problems connecting to GPS with xoss closed from background then you probably got a faulty unit or possibly your location might not be the best for GPS signals, good luck
Hey, nice work out there! I want to try this on my m820, both are leaking oil. Can I get you contact? I would like to get in touch with you.
👍👍👍👍 thanks so much I was about to watch 30 mins on the parktools channel instead I saved myself a 25 mins of my busy time 😅 my dropper was almost dry with only about a month of use and was already creaking! I recommend anybody to do it asap
I did this hack and it did last 8 months, unfortunately the creaking is back!
Thanks for this video. I have 4-pairs of these pedals and 2 of them have this problem. So you said for the new o-rings the ID was 5 mm and they were 2 mm thick. Do you recall what the OD was?
You are welcome! if ID is 5mm and it is 2mm thick, it means OD has to be 9mm (5mm + 2mm + 2mm), cheers!
Amazon has some with OD 8 mm and OD 9 mm so maybe lateral thickness isn’t always the same as radial thickness? Anyways thanks again. Can’t wait to make my pedals spin again.
@@tsn73 Amazon listing is definitely wrong unless its 1.5mm thickness, its impossible to have 5mm ID and 8mm OD with 2mm thickness :D Enjoy them free spinning pedals!
Thank you!
I could kiss you. Chasing where this creak was coming from has been maddening!!!
I will try this method, unfortunately the links below do not work anymore, and I don't find the rings on AliExpress, could you please tell wo should I search for then. Also want to know how is it going after you did that. 👋
😂😂😂
Thanks for the idea now i will try this
Great build. The one thing I wouldn't risk is the cheap stem. Those bolts love to snap. Smart using the fire extinguisher as a booster.
Thanks! and this is true and I knew this about the bolts on that stem from reviews, I switched them for good quality bolts when I got it and no issues so far :)
Best instructions video I've ever used! Thanks a lot! Saved my dropper
Glad it helped!
This is the best video of Service bearings. Thank you.

Changing Seals is overengineered?
My m820 lever leaks air when I use the lever very slowly and it goes all the way to the handlebars without breaking unless I pull the lever fast. What should I do?
leaks air? there should be no air in the system, attach a funnel with some fluid and top off the system, if its still doing the same thing it sounds like maybe your seals on the piston are possibly worn out, I am guessing this because when you pull fast it puts enough pressure on the seal to expand and do its job, but if you go slow it wont expand enough to seal. I am not 100% sure these fit your model but I imagine they do www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002456932338.html
@@MTBfixHQ that should be the issue, I’ve already replaced the piston but the one I’ve installed was used from a brake whose lever was broken and I think the piston wasn’t new enough, thanks for the link I’ll try to get a new piston. Btw it’s a shigura mt5
Ahh this video and comment is a godsend. Really random but I have the same issue on a Zoom 876e. I suspected it's some sort of valve/rubber issue as at fast pressure it hooks up fine. I'll take it apart and have a look see. Thanks!
@@JLneonhug the issue was very easy to fix, take the lever piston out and change the rubber parts from the piston
Thanks!😉
I wanted to replace my old DT Swiss 370 bearings to a hybrid bearings. How many bearings do i need to get for the front and rear? And what size and model? Thanks
Sorry I do not know which size bearings all the dt swiss hubs use but you can easily find this out by just taking the end caps off and reading the numbers on the bearings seals, you can also use this link to search for your specific hubs, then you scroll down to see which components the hub uses and it will give you bearing sizes, Cheers! www.dtswiss.com/en/support/product-support#filter
Got it thank you
Used this method on my Saint M820 lever. Disassembly was slightly different; there's a small metal pin you have to hammer out which was the hardest part for me. I first used both o-rings like you did, but the spring would not push the piston all the way out. Using just the larger o-ring allowed the piston to move properly. I've had 2 rides with this setup, about 5-6 hours total, brakes are feeling so good and no leaking so far. Thanks for the video :)
Hmmm im surprised the second o-ring affects your setup like that, its possible the plunger/piston is designed slightly different for each model, at least the main big o-ring is doing its job :) 👍 Cheers
Same here on M520
Just grabbed a pair of the freeriders and I love them. Was riding with just regular stiff soled shoes before and man what a difference these made.
Yeah I can still remember when I switched from tennis shoes to my first freerider pro's, insane difference!!! almost like being clipped in
I was on board until I heard "Dry for a few days" lmao, I dont have time to let anything cure, but my bike is a light gray mtb, so not only are scratches expected butonly the really deep ones actually show up
Awesome video. I have DT Swiss rims too. Just wondering what grease did you use. I see that it's green. Is that an all purpose grease that you put in the bearing and on the axel? I get confused when it comes to grease because alot of forums say that you shouldn't mix grease. I have blue marine grease, red and tacky grease, slick honey for my suspension. Also white lithium grease. Lol
Thanks! ya some people take grease a little too seriously, just better to use a lighter grease to pack a bearing to keep resistance down. The green grease you see in my video is motorex 2000 bike grease, its a very good grease from switzerland and I recommend it, its good for bearings and all other general things and its safe on carbon fiber, people say its the same green grease that shimano uses so I use it for almost everything, and for greasing the outside of bearings and the walls any grease will do and the blue marine grease should also be fine for inside the bearing
Thanks man. I'll take a look at the motored 2000.
Weird screen comparison since you hadn't peeled off the screen sticker. Currently waiting on another sensor (to do speed and cadence while on a trainer indoors) and also the heart rate monitor, it is pretty hard to believe what we can track for under $100.
Yeah I tried to peel it back to see if the screen changed at all and noticed no difference so I just left it on to protect it :) I agree these computers are coming down a lot in price, for the computer, speed sensor and heart rate sensor the total cost was $29!!
Would it be basically the same process for the Rock Shox Deluxe Nude RLC3 DebonAir? Thanks for the great vid, BTW!
Yeah I can't see why not, it should be the same process and you are welcome! :)
Hey! How to check lap data?
Hi! the middle button is the lap button if you short press it, top right corner of screen shows what lap you are on, no more lap data on device you would need to check that on strava or the XOSS app I think
thanks! really helpful
You are welcome :)
Nice! Thanks for this!
Glad to help :)
This is really helpful! Great explanation, high production quality and organized links. Well done man!
Thanks for the kind words! I try to make it as clear as I can :)
Thanks so much for doing this video
Glad to help!
Bro, how long experience do you have with that setup? Does it affect lever feel?
I have used this setup for 2 years now on my other lever without issues, no difference in lever feel but if you use a oring that is too large it can affect the return speed of the lever because the return spring only has so much force
thx!
You're welcome!

superglue does the job as well
Great video. Any idea why when I got to screw the shaft to the green part, I am like 2cm short? If I screw the collar all the way, I don’t have enough room to reassemble flush. It’s driving me crazy
I am not sure.... so when you try to tighten the green bottom cap to the post it doesn't screw in all the way? it most likely means you cross threaded and you may have some stripped threads, inspect closely, I can't really see any other reason for it
@@MTBfixHQ There is no cross threading. When I put everything back together, it’s like the metal shaft is now too long. It’s so weird. I’ve watched your video 10 times lol. Bushings are the same. Pins are in. The sheath slides on great. I almost feel like I’m being pranked haha.
@@mahmer09 lol, ok I think I know what happened. You must have pushed that little pin at the end of the air shaft and it must have extended beyond max travel of the dropper post. Try to install the green cap again and once you thread it on a little you can push that little green lever at the bottom of the green cap and push down on the top of the dropper post at same time so it sinks into its travel a little bit, then it should allow the green cap to thread fully on :)
@@MTBfixHQ Dude! You saved Christmas! That was it. I must have assembled and disassembled that seat post 20 times. On the plus side, I am now a pro in servicing this post. Happy Holidays! Thanks!
