5 Trends from the Premier League Season
My thoughts on five trends I saw during the 2023-24 Premier League season. I talk about successful gambles in managerial hires like Andoni Iraola, Gary O'Neil, and Oliver Glasner. Plus Man City, Aston Villa, and Arsenal running into a new era while Manchester United and Chelsea struggle. I also cover the new reality of relegation and Burnley. Lastly I talk about Brighton and Brentford underachieving as data-driven clubs.

      Neither of them played in enough matches for me to feel confident about including them because the sample size was too small. But in their limited appearances Ramsdale has a score of 41, which puts him in between Flekken and Trafford at 20th. Ortega has a 71 which puts him third in the league. But again they each only played six times in the Premier League so take it with a grain of salt.

    Belgium's golden generation had KDB, Lukaku, Hazard, Kompamy, Alderweild, Vertonghen, Cortouis, Mertens, Naingollan, Witsel & Tielemans. Thats 11 arguably world class players in their primes. I dont think the new Belgium generation are gonna be this good especially since I dont think theres a kdb/hazard level talent and the lack of defense

  • @DionBakanga

    Norway have poor keeper options, even poorer left back options and mediocre CB options. Also doesnt help that their coach Solbakken is a bad coach. Thats why imo.

    • @sageofsoccer
      @sageofsoccer Před 2 měsíci

      Nyland has been poor for Norway which is weird because he's been good for Sevilla. Hopefully he can start performing with his national team, but even if he does he's 33 and doesn't successor. Their left backs aren't great, but I have hope for their center backs. Though Ajer seems to be better in a back three and I don't think that suits Norway. Hopefully a better manager will be able to solve the problem.

    I think you started of wrong. For the Euros, Belgium is still one of the 4 favourites. I don't think theres someone who really thinks that Belgium will fall back to the level where they will have difficulties to qualify in the next 30 years. The infrastructure is good and compared to the past they are one of the top export nations to the biggest leagues. Belgium will always be a nation to be aware of in the future. Not like a France, a Germany or a Brazil, but like on a level like the Netherlands, Spain or Italy. An underdog to keep beeing aware of.

    I kind of disagree with the assessment in Turner. Watching the games, time after time his defense are the ones letting him down. The league is so hyper focused on building up from the back, so many of times Turner is forced to pass to the defenders, who refuse to get open, lose the ball and then are down a goal. They really need to know when to punt the ball down the field rather than constantly building up an attack.

    • @sageofsoccer
      @sageofsoccer Před 5 měsíci

      Just to be clear I wasn't talking about playing out of the back. I think you're right that the league can be overly focused on building out of the back. Teams like City obviously need to but for teams battling relegation shot stopping is important. I was critical of Flekken's shot stopping but he is good at building out of the back. Despite that I still think he is hurting Brentford. And I think Turner is hurting Forest with his overall play.

    • @peaches906
      @peaches906 Před 5 měsíci

      Turner is a decent shot stopper, but lacks confidence and his kicking is awful! if in doubt just clear it I don't care if he boots it out of play for a throw in on the half way lane. I just cant watch his kick it out to the opposition for them to immediately score again!...

    It's honestly looking really good for our national team right now, especially the defensive midfield and the wings. I think they might genuinely become better than the last generation, even if we won't get players like De Bruyne, Hazard and Courtois. I feel like the squad depth is gonna be way better this time around cause apart from the players you named in the video, there's even more great ones I can think of right now. Every time I hear people say we have talent from Mexico and Canada fans. My question is always where is it at? From the U15-U23 there is a clear gap between Mexican, Canadian, and USYNT. In my eyes, Canada got lucky with Davies and David. Canada also peaked in WCQ.

    • @sageofsoccer
      @sageofsoccer Před 6 měsíci

      Canada and Mexico kinda have reverse problems. Mexico will have some of the top youth prospects then struggle to integrate them. Canada will just have good players pop up in the MLS draft that never played with the youth national team. Liga MX needs to get a lot better with getting prospects to the first team and Canada needs to take youth development seriously.

    • @noting7678
      @noting7678 Před 6 měsíci

      @@sageofsoccer I just don’t know if you realized that they really don’t have the talent that you think they have. One of Mexico best U17 player is Fidel Barajas. Fidel has been developed in USL, not Liga MX. Gael Álvarez is the only good one. CPL is still 10-15 years away from what the MLS is at. Develop wise.

    • @sageofsoccer

      Mexico were runners up at the u17 World Cup before this one. They are always a power at youth level. Even if they are going through a lull, I'd say that has more to do with the pandemic affecting players than an overall trend. And they won the u17 CONCACAF tournament with relative ease so it's not like they're terrible even if this group is less talented than ones before.

    Big man, there's a reason why Solskjaer doesn't have a job since the utd job, Ragnick has a job, the man was given a damaged utd team. damaged by ole. Ten Hag won a trophy. Don't comment on things you don't know about.

    • @sageofsoccer
      @sageofsoccer Před 8 měsíci

      I understand that Solskjaer shifted United to a more counter attacking team, but I'd say that was necessary with the team he inherited. He should have changed that style eventually and I'm not going to argue the Ragnick or ten Hag walked into an easy job. But this season has been bad and I can't blame that on Ole. Just look at how fast Postecoglou got Tottenham playing well. I'm not saying that Solskjaer was a great manager and I brought up Kjetil Knutsen as another option because of that. But getting United to finish 3rd and 2nd in his two full seasons is a good achievement. He didn't win a trophy but United isn't, or at least shouldn't be, a club that measures success on cup titles. Out of Moyes, van Gaal, Mourinho, Solskjaer, and ten Hag, I think Mourinho is the only United boss since Ferguson you can even argue had a better run, but like I said it's a low bar to clear.

    I think Palace will finish between 10-13th this year. Not a bold prediction, but they have enough talent where relegation will be over their shoulder, but not a big danger. Side note I’m going to see them play Sevilla in Detroit today! Can’t wait!

      That seems like where we always end up, I think you'll end up right. I hope you enjoy the game!

      Lol, I feel good about this video but it's scary to have all this stuff online. Come back in three years and half the guys I'm bigging up could be playing semi pro and some players I haven't talked about are World Class.

    I like the upped production on this video and changing things up! Keep it up!

    Thank you for being objective and sensible about an English player. Something a lot of Americans cannot do, you have shown yourself to be an actual fan of the game not a flag. John Stones’ growth has been exponential. His performance in the WC against France was something else.

      This feels like a backhanded compliment, but thanks for the compliment part. But yes Stones something to watch this year.

      Fooled by ourselves maybe, there were always signs GGG was coming back.

    I’m a bit saddened to see a lot of negative comments. I don’t like GGG either and the hiring process they made up is complete BS. Let’s celebrate this victory though!!!! Yes Mexico are in shambles but it’s the opposite we are looking better and better. Let’s complain and worry about GGG later on. Right now it’s all about getting this tournament dub.
