Diary of a Curious Gardener
United States
Registrace 30. 11. 2023
At the core of my gardening approach is curiosity. I love to experiment and see what knowledge I can gain from the many experiences a garden has to offer. There’s a reason “experiment” and “experience” have the same root word.
I also believe that gaining knowledge is only half of the equation. If you don’t share what you have learned, then the knowledge gained from experience stops with you. That is one reason why books have always been so revered! My goal is to pass on, through video content, my knowledge gained from current and past experiments & experiences in the garden.

How to raise Monarchs. (Complete lifecycle)
Raising Monarchs is such a rewarding experience! It is imperative that a few key things happen, for the safety of the disappearing Monarch population. Even if you don't want to raise them, you can still help them in a big way.
1. Plant milkweed plants that are found in your region.
2. Plant pollinator friendly flowers to provide nectar for the butterfly stage.
(If you're going to raise them in a well ventilated enclosure)
3. Collect the leaves that the eggs have been attached to.
4. Provide fresh milkweed daily.
5. Clean out frass (poop) daily.
6. Release the butterfly near some flowers, around 24hrs after it emerges.

Extending a drip line for a new planter box.

I was given a new (used) planter box. I don't want to have to remember to go out and water it everyday, so in the video I extend an existing drip line to accommodate the new planter.

I have stopped using pebbles and found cockroaches making babies at the bottom of the pots. I’m going back putting some sharp gravel, not much and maybe a screen may that will keep them out. To bring in a plant for winter with those bugs isn’t what I want.. I’m going to have to repot any I bring in for the winter….😕
I tried that but nothing ever used it that I saw, 😢 wondered of it was because I used real sea sand from the beach. But if they are attracted to the salt, that shouldn't of hurt?😊
Makes sense, California is where they are most prominent so it would stand to reason the soil there is what they need for success. I'd definately look into the laws of shipping over state lines, I know shipping trees across state lines can have limitations but I'm not sure about soil. I hope to see an update on this soon. Cheers.
Hi, i saved two caterpillars, one already turned into a cocoon, but the other looks like it got stuck and died :( it looks like the frame at 0:22 and has been like that for 4 days already. It didn't make it, did it? 😢
I live in UAE and always keep water on my balcony. Lizards and bees coming. Little birds, one time falcon even❤
WHO THINKS??? ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
Bees and wasps gather at swimming pool water features also.
Butterflies are shockingly metal. I love learning new things about those little weirdos. 😁
Good job ❤
Thankyou! All new information for me thanks for sharing!
What a wonder idea. I keep water out but the tiny creatures will appreciate one.
Cool. Great idea!
❤ this post!! Salt, and other minerals. Prefarably horse pee. If not available use seesalt, clay, manure.
I keep a small fountain outside and the amount of bees that are around it on these hot dry days... lets just say, i refill the fountain 6/7 times a day. And i love doing it.
The hive will be within about 25 feet. They need a half gallon of water a day just to keep the interior of the hive cool
Dawn soap and vinegar helps the bees sleep so you can move them 😅
Part 2 please
Yes! I will try for sure. Check back in about two weeks.
@@1curious.gardener thank you I am really interested
My favorite part is the gold necklace they get and then when the chrysalis turns clear and you can see their orange and black wings!
Great advice on these record breaking hot days! ❤❤❤❤ I always add several rocks to my birdbaths too. Birds need to know the depth before drinking from them.
I don't do this anymore because it attached wasps so much!!
I have a butterfly bush with many caterpillars and butterflies ❤ thanks!
I keep honey bees ...they love old still green water as well as running water. Ive even seen them take water off the top of cow patties (thats one you dont tell honey lovers) A constant water source will grow all sorts of other fascinating beasties too, that don't harm the visitors in any way
My beekeeper friend uses slooped course sand to provide a good plave for the bees as the water level changes. The bugs and bees say thank you.
I keep 4 birdbaths going in the hot summer and one with a heater in winter. All critters need water!
🙏🐦❤ Thank you, I love you.
Love this.
Looks like a swarm found you!
I put out water for squirrels and stray cats and bird bath for birds and I have humming bird feeders.
I have plant drip trays filled with water around my property that have stones in them for bees to land on. My neighbor has hives and the trays are filled with bees daily getting a drink especially in this heat wave we're having.
Thank you
Oh no u throw away dandelions salad, tea,&tincher there good 4 u
Excellent. People don't think of this. Also, people make ponds or barrels of water with no way out and things drown.
From seed smaller than rice to a wood producing succulent, how awesome
I learned bees like tears cuz of the salt.
lol there’s no salts in manure
We had some hives at our community garden for a few years and it was fun to see them! But unfortunately the bees had to move because the bees found a great water source in someone's yard...who happened to have a severe allergy to bee stings. They're now at a different community garden, and the space with the beehives is being turned into a native prarie planting
Go native prairies 😃👍
Thank you for posting. I keep water out for all the critters as well. I see lots of bees use my ceramic watering flower and my fountain. I’m going to use your tip about using a rock ramp for critters that get caught in the water.
Thank you for telling me about this or me stumbling onto your CZcams. I do put out water when the weather is so hot most of my friends think I’m crazy but I think they’re crazy cause they’re not putting out any water for the animals outside animals
I used the cubes as compost tea for the first time this year. Wow! It's great stuff! My plants love it.
Great idea for butterflies! I'm with you, all kinds of bugs enjoy my garden/yarden - love them all and also have several water options!😂❤
Everything has been drinking out of our bird fountain with past couple days. Looks great! Cheers bud from New York.
Should it be in the sun or shade
I think dappled shade, as he has it. I have seen butterflies using a natural puddle in full sun. This tray would dry out, but maybe that would prevent mosquito eggs.
Love
Thank you for that! I have to make one of those now!
Thank you for putting out water. Beekeepers should always provide water for their bees…
Beekeeper here. Most of us do, but the bees go where they want. They aren't truly domesticated. They tend to prefer "smelly" water sources, so the muddy area he provided is great.
I'd like to try that!
I keep the tray from an old dog kennel in my garden... i use it when i neglect my pots and they need to soak up some water... bull frogs, turtles, butter flies, birds... all sorts of life comes to use my water trays and buckets
I have a couple of old indoor guineapig house bases that I do the same with...a few rocks in one end and let them get all scarey looking and the insects love them...even better if there are things swimming in them
Wont have any bees or insects if Gates gets to them
How to breed mosquitoes 101
Definetly throw out and refresh regularly lol
Not if the water is moving. Like his birdbath.
What about adding some Mosquito Bits?
@@dreed1058 that could be toxic to birds, small animals, and beneficial insects.
I hope someone who really knows addresses this. I put out saucers of water and rinse, wipe down surfaces & refresh. I'm guessing the 'puddle tray' is too dry for the mosquito eggs & larva??
I'm so doing this thank you
