Kim Jung Gi’s Memorizing Method: Draw What You Remember Without Reference, Check Reference, & Repeat
(source: m.czcams.com/users/liveR0q2IuW5-vI)
#KimJungGi explains how he studied effectively and built his visual library:
-He 1st observed the subject or reference.
-He next drew what he remembered without looking at the reference.
-Then, he looked at the reference again to find out what he didn’t remember.
-Finally, he would repeat this process over and over again until he memorized the subject.

QUICK SUMMARY Copying is the basic thing that every artist is supposed to do. Kim Jung Gi himself used to copy from his favourite artists. Eventually he moved on from the copying phase. But of course this does not mean that there is anything wrong with people who copy from reference. Kim Jung Gi just believes that drawing from one's visual library is good because it helps to sharpen observation skills. You have to observe the world around you then you have to try to remember what you can. When you are away from the thing you observed or when you have put your reference image away, you have to now draw from memory. Kim Jung Gi would observe objects then he would try to draw them later from memory without looking at the objects. He did this because during his time internet platforms that have references weren't readily available. Kim Jung Gi drew what interested him. During those days it could be an object like a bicycle, roller blades or anything that captured his interest. He applied his imagination to what he drew by adding what he liked to his drawings. He also believed in drawing all sorts of different objects to widen his scope of artistic knowledge.
The seemingly effortless talent of this man is incredible! 👏
he is going to be teaching young artists for decades to come, so even if he's gone sadly, his spirit will remain present for a very long time.
He really just messing around with the camera😂
❤
How the fuck am I supposed to calculate the percentage of things I know how to draw? And when do I reach 100%? Will I know everything in existence if I reach 100%?
For example if you pick up the reference of a Patagonian mara and draw it as carefully as you can and really study the anatomy and shape of the legs and everything with the intent to redraw it tomorrow then you will really observe it with intent and take your time. The next day as you try to draw it again you'll know what you remember and what you don't remember so when you do the same exercise you know what to focus on to try to study and memorize. His recall is like being fluent in that subject. If you can draw a chair in any angle from memory then you are "fluent" in chairs like KJG.

in short its like you practiced so much you could "guess it" right ? like shooting an arrow very far and you try to get closer and closer to the target and if it was for darts your goal is to be able to make full bullseyes on the shots

The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long. In his case it was more like 10 times as bright. We’ve been robbed of an unfathomable brilliance. Truly one of a kind.
Beautifully said my friend. Could not agree more!
bs quote, throw that away in the trash. What you believe in is what will be, that doesn't help at all

Born with a photographic memory.
It truly is just studying. When you draw it the first time and observe it with the intention to review and redraw the next day and only remember 30-60% the next day it is the same as studying homework and review that.
There is lots of detail but no expression of light and shading
