The Best Splitting Maul?
zhlédnutí 60Před 28 dny
Today we are splitting elm with a Helko Werk splitting maul. It is 6-1/2lbs with a 36" handle and is soon to be discontinued. Overall it seems to be a good splitter and a well made tool.
$165 Splitting Maul - Unboxing and First Impressions
zhlédnutí 186Před měsícem
This is a Helko Werk Splitting maul, it is a 6-1/2lb maul on a 36" maul, it is hand forged in Germany. I got it off Amazon for $82.50 but it was supposed to be $165, I just got it half off. I also forgot to mention that it is being discontinued.
Splitting wood with only a sledgehammer
zhlédnutí 582Před měsícem
This is a 12lb stone hammer, as you can see the profile is in between a splitting maul and a regular sledgehammer, so I was curious to see how well it would split or rather "mash" the wood apart.

I have been splitting wood with wedges and a maul since I was 10 years old! I am now 67 years old and find the 6 lb maul better because of the speed! I am 6ft 4 225 lbs! You remind me of myself when I was young! Great job young man!
Cool video buddy. Nice job on review! I have his #2 regular jaw traps 1 ½ dozen. I love the trap, it reminds you of a Montgomery. The only thing I had to do to them was smooth the in side of the jaws they had a sharp edge. I will be getting more of them . They have some strong holding power.
That's not how you want an axe to chop though.
Why not? Yes you do also want to pop chips, but most new axes are too thick to chop efficiently.
It most definitely is lol a chopping axe is supposed to be razor sharp
@@mr.anxiety3858Sharp yeah sure. But not so thin that it gets stuck with each chop.
Being held in just enough that it doesn't fall out isn't "stuck". But even if you were in a specific type of wood and your axe was sticky, that can no doubt be solved or lessened by stripping the head down to bare metal and oiling it up, polishing it would also help. Older axes in fact had a high center or convex cheeks, to reduce sticking.
@@tinkywinky4449 a Chopping axe is supposed to be thin and splitting axe has a thicker bevel and broad head and it’s not going to get stuck if properly sharpened
Hearing that saw not wanting to start in the background reminds me of why we ALWAYS bring an axe AND a saw to the roof. I’ve never seen an a e fail to start…
Lowes has Estwing. Only buy 🇺🇸.
Amen.
Nice traps, i bought a long spring trap at a car booth sale a few years back, im not sure how old it is its made completely by hand everything on it was hand riveted together no welding done whatsoever and its still works perfectly.
They don't make 'em like they used to.
I snagged one a few years back. It came sharp, but *really* performed after i stropped it just a little.
Flip it over.
That definitely would gave been easier, I was just looking for a challenge.
I leave those pieces in the woods now days lol. Good exercise though
Yea that's basically why I did it, it was the only piece left and I has a strong urge to swing my new maul into something.
Chainsaw
what gpi is the arrow
16.75 grains per inch (just arrow, no broadhead). 21.75 grains per inch (if you include the broadhead). Arrows is 20" and 335gr by itself, broadhead is 100gr, total weight is 435gr.
I was hoping to see you split wood with it
Yea, I'm coming out with a video later this week where I test it on an elm round and a few other pieces.
Might wanna put on a pair of gloves to protect your hands, honing with that awkward stone.
Got one on my hip right now
Bien bolsillera . Saludos👍
Put wood your cutting on the ground. not on another wood piece. so your power stroke is longer creating more force. Second, by keeping wood on ground, you don't have to pick it up so far from ground on each stroke. Place each axe strike with idea of striking wood to best split along center lines
That would have been a good idea here, I just typically use a chopping block so I don't send my maul into the concrete.
Excuse me for breathing! Don't cut wood on concrete but where it won't hurt your mail. Cut wood the way it helps the best an that's getting as much power swing as possible!
Typically if I don't use a chopping block and I split on bare ground, the soft ground absorbs some of the energy, especially in wet spring, plus the ground can still dull mauls as there are rocks underground. That has been my experience but do what's best for you.
Not really, it's wedged. And, it's heavier than an axe.
Yes, but it was also very blunt, it had no edge at all, and not "made" for splitting, so I had very low expectations for it.
Ive got those same axes and they are awesome. The full sized double bit i used on some dry hickory 2 weeks ago and the edges held up great !
Glad to here you're enjoying the Marbles axes, I would have to agree they are a very good value.
Als Brieföffner geeignet 🎉
Definitely.
Try $60.
It's $55-60 some places, $35 at Smoky Mountain Knife Works.
One edge is thicker than the other...one side the thick side for splitting the other thin edge is for hewning.
Yes, on this double bit is asymmetrical one bit has a longer edge and is thicker, the other has a shorter edge and is thinner. Typically most double bits are symmetric, both bits are the same and you just put two different grinds on it, one thinner for better chopping, and one more durable for knots, girdiling (departing a section of trunk to use crosscut saw, and rooting.
Heaven!
Tennessee is a good place to visit, I definitely would recommend it!
Beautiful
It is very beautiful here, and I think I got the perfect angle.
I would be willing to bet if you used it as much as the other saw was used, and it survived the handle would be very comfortable. And dont forget to soak your handles in oil
I strip the vanish of my axe handles and use boiled linseed oil.
Linseed is definitely the best choice
The new one is a basic shape and will do a job or two, the extra time needed to shape it like the old one would cost alot more, so it would make the price of the saw uncompetitive.
Good thinking
Sure? It's probably more likely that its shape for ok hand grip and faster for the machine to cut.
I have 2 old Victor's with the small rectangular pans.. and now I gotta go look to see if I can set them the way you just did. Thanks!💯👍👍
This one with the rectangular pan was actually a Herters, which was an old sporting goods dealer like Cabelas from what I understand. But an I have an old Victor stoploss that sets the same exact same.
I love how sharp the buck brand knives come straight out of the package.
Ein sehr schönes Teil und von der Größe ein optimales EDC Messer. Scheint ein schon etwas älterer Stachel zu sein.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I definitely agree, small enough to disappear in your pocket yet certainly a usable size.
Nah
good looking knife man, making me want to go pick one up!
It's definitely my favorite, and feels as good as it looks!
RIP Sleepy Creek... they were the last company that made #2 or #3 Long spring traps on earth
Yea, it's too bad, the dbl long springs I have are #11, and I love the for water trapping because they are so easy to set on you knee when you're in a river or a ditch, unlike coilsprings.
Part 2?
Sorry, that was all the footage I got when I was down there. I wanted to record the barn as I thought it was very unique, reminded me of something European.
Dónde lo hacen estos trampas para encontrar
Many sporting goods stores here will carry them, with varying amounts of options, and all of the older ones I got from estate sales or garage sales.
Nice work young man. 👍
Thanks!
Great Video!! Thank You!
You're welcome, I'm glad you found it helpful!
Usually for a muskrat float I use two scoops of Breyers French Vanilla, a teaspoon of vanilla extract and one muskrat.
Thanks for the recipe!

It sure is beautiful and serene❤Is this Tennessee?😊🎉❤
Yes this is in Tennessee, although part of this National Park extends into North Carolina.
This was once Cherokee land native people pushed Westward stolen by the people that landed on the shores of America in 1620😢
Just as the Cherokee stole it from the Creek, Yuchi, and Shawnee.
The jaw tips should be bent up like that to prevent the jaws from coming loose. Better yet, get out your welder and bubble tip the jaws on all your traps
Just me- I'll not have any more foot traps without a substantial frame or welding a base plate on the bottom to prevent the frame from flexing. I'm sure no professional by any means, but I've trapped enough to know that anytime I put a trap out it needs to be completely secured and anchored to hold whatever creature might stick it's foot in, and the trap itself needs to be sturdy enough and not weak to allow an animal to wreck it when it fights
First I've ever heard of the name. I can attest to the Dukes I have were all weak in the frame and needed base plates welded on the bottom, and the cross frames needed a bead of weld. In fairness, the Victor 1.5's I bought were as weak in the frame and some ears broke off where the jaws are mounted. They welded back together ok, but it shouldn't have happened. Some new Duke B.G. traps I bought a few years ago and put aside broke the welds when I took them out to use a few days back. Brand new, never used just POP ! ! ! and the welds broke trying to set them
Most of my traps are Dukes, as they are pretty much the only brand available near me and are cheap. But they are as thin and flimsy as you can make a trap, should have invested in Bridgers at least.
After welding a flat base plate with D- ring they're properly stiffened up and after adjusting the dog and pan they're decent And at least one crunch proof swivel. The swivel is the best practical advice I've ever gotten from experienced trappers. And anchoring any trap as if you anticipate godzilla stepping in it. Always.
My comments have more likes then this video which is kinda sad ill like +1 👍
Thanks for the like, I appreciate it!
Be prepared for that to split again, and be a more surprising end result. I would switch to a hickory handle.
I beleive it is a Hickory handle, as that is the standard wood for handles in the US, but yes it did split later on when I tried to split a piece of wood, hit the edge with the bit, and the wood didn't split entirely and the handle hit the wood.
good demonstration
Thanks
What will you be going after with that trap?.
A number 2 is typically a canine trap (foxes, coyotes), and it could also be used for bobcats and lynx. However my most likely target will be coyotes or foxes.
Thanks so much for reviewing this trap. I’m going to buy a dozen. They will be laminated though.
Glad my video was helpful, good luck and tight chains!
Oh P.S sadly sleepy creek went out of business . They are still out there .
Blake and lamb have always made a good trap. Cut the chain in the middle on the Duke and add a box swivel . Good luck
