Kay Ryan's poems affect me the way that Lydia Davis's pieces affect me. Their eccentric humour and intellectual qualities hide enormous reservoirs of beauty and pathos. They always make me laugh and cry.

Kay Ryan’s work reminds me of my favorite children’s poet, Valerie Worth, whose “small poems” also share the “recombinant rhyme.” Worth and Ryan did not know of one another, as far as I know, but the similarities are so wonderfully present. Hoping more Ryan readers discover Worth’s amazing writing.

Very much enjoyed your poems and reading. I’m a senryu, haibun, tanka, kyoka poet and hope you don’t mind me sharing a recent haibun. The inspiration came after you mentioning “ theoloneous Monk in one your poems. It triggered this memory titled ‘Round Midnight: ‘Round Midnight It was a huge ballroom on the top floor of a building on Broadway --an important midtown crossroads in the heart of the Great White Way. My uncle still talks with reverence about how--in his heyday--he would travel by rail to the corner of Lenox and walk inside to the beat of jungle music. Who knew what to expect? One night you might be listening with rapt attention to Theloneous Monk the godfather of bebop in his beret cap, or dizzy gillespie with bent horn and pouched cheeks rocking the joint with wild scat incantations, or enchanted by the sweet taste of Brown Sugar--with Bojangles out front. And when the Bird was in flight, even the moon was not high enough. But in 1940 the ballroom closed its doors to make way for a commercial housing development and another kind of night. new Harlem-- the A-Train replaced by the bullet -Al Fogel all love in isolation from Miami Beach, Florida Al

I’ve gone through this lecture, copied out by hand each poem KR discusses, and annotated everything she says about it. It was a great exercise to do all this. But that said, it would be wonderful if she had a written-up -and, ideally, expanded- version of this lecture. (Unless, of course, she’s done this. Anyone know of anything along these lines?)
