Is tatoeëren een ambacht, of is het vrije kunst? De Do It Yourself-generatie denkt alles toch zelf te kunnen, dus waarom ook niet tatoeëren? VICE ging naar Rotterdam om het fenomeen thuistatoeëren te onderzoeken. We spraken Kristel (“Tatoeëren is een ambacht”), Karim (“Dit hoort bij mijn persoonlijke ontwikkeling”) en Erik (“Iedereen kan een lijntje zetten”). We gingen ook langs een groep vrienden die tatoeëren ziet als een gezelschapsspel.
Vroeger waren tatoeages iets voor zeelieden en bouwvakkers. Nu mag papa de ‘Marcel’ of ‘Jeroen’ in de schaamstreek van zijn zestienjarige dochter bekostigen. Tatoeages zijn voor de hele familie, iedereen wil er eentje laten zetten. Maar naast de oude rotten in hun steriele winkeltje zijn er ook steeds meer ‘thuisprikkers’ die je thuis op de bank inkleuren. Het is een klap in het gezicht traditionele tatoeëerders, die zichzelf als de bewakers van het ambacht zien. Maar voor iedereen die niet jaren in de leer wil is thuisprikken the way to go.
Shopeigenaren maken zich zorgen, maar niet iedereen die thuis tatoeëert is een beunhaas. Thuistatoeëerder Karim: ‘Ik begrijp de kritiek van shopeigenaren heel goed, maar in mijn geval gaat het gewoon niet op.”
