It probably was a lot worse in real life than shown here. Slave breeding farms were a direct consequence of Congress making it illegal to import enslaved people from Africa/foreign countries on US soil in 1808.
You think dying is bad. That is like dying everyday. It is sick to think that is possibly where the English word "name brand" came from. As long as people see/treat others as animals there will never truly be equality.
There's a strong possibility that you would slowly die of infection as a result of being branded like that in that day and age with no medical attention. Those enslavers are complete barbarians.

It was a common practice to brand slaves, but in Antebellum slavery branding slaves was mostly done as a punishment for runaway slaves. Some slave owners branded slaves, so they can be identified.

The slave owners viewed them as livestock which in my opinion makes the slave owners more barbaric. They didn’t even see them as human beings. If you have a horse for plowing you don’t want to injure the horse because if you do no matter how much you try to make it plow it won’t be physically able to do so and if you kill it that means you have to go out and spend money on a new horse.
