Weathering National Rail 8117 (SDS Models)
Today we're weathering 8117 in National Rail livery from SDS Models. The National Rail livery is one of the more short lived liveries that some 81s were in during their stint with NR before joining PN in 2003 and I find it weather's up rather uniquely compared to Freight Rail blue or PN Blue.
The SDS 81 class is the pinnacle of 81 class models to date and I'm allowed to say that I own 14 of them so look out for more 81 class weathering videos!
Weathered based off of a photo of 8117 in the hunter valley circa 2003.
Equipment and Material Used (no affiliate links, I'm not special enough):
- Iwata HP.CH Hi Line 0.3 mm Gravity-Feed Airbrush (bit.ly/41FW6Ro)
- Generic compressor (from Aldi)
- Vallejo Mecha Dark Rust Wash (bit.ly/3GZsipb)
- Vallejo Model Air NATO Black (bit.ly/3H0YZTa)
- Vallejo Model Air Tire Black (bit.ly/3RZb2qE)
- Vallejo Model Air Dirt (bit.ly/41C05yc)
- Vallejo Mecha Petrol Spills (bit.ly/4azbUcK)

Today I'm weathering 3 IDR models BBW/NWHF wagons and adding loads to them. Now in 4K! What's next? A voice over?! About the wagon The BBW/NHWF wagon was first introduced to the NSW Railways in the 1920s and became the standard ballast hopper for the NSW government railways for almost 60 years until the introduction of the NDFF in the early 1990s but continued to be used until 1997. Ballast trains keep the railways going! A series of clips shot from 1990-1996 of Ballast Trains around various parts of NSW. My modelling lately has me focused on departmental/ways and works trains and ballast trains comprise part of that. Along with the imminent release of IDRs BBW/NHWF ballast hoppers I thought I'd do some video research. I'm still learning a new editing program (Premier Pro)...

I came here almost weekly for years to shunt goods until 1994. The good old days that can only be understood by them who experienced it. Thankyou for this vide, the good memories that are so valuable and to be cherished. 👍👍
427 departing ?
Now part of the new light rail en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandown_railway_line. It lives on.
I thought Sandown was a race track for cars not trains? Train racing? It does exist but only rarely
My dad was a train driver back then and he used to let me drive the train between Werrington & Kingswood Great fun 👍

Wow… is all I can say. Absolutely GREAT footage, Allan! Oh some great memories from this footage. Will watch on repeat 👍🏻
Ahh, the good old days when trains were timetabled to run at normal speed, and even a DEB set thrown in.. gold!
Trains were quicker at stops in those days, none of this doors opening and closing riff raff
Here me thinking there was a race course nearby, & not Rosehill,
Another fantastic video from the 90's mate. Great to see all the variety
Fantastic video mate, great variety of the NSW trains from the old days
48's are my favorite loco's, and with my father being a station master from the 1940's to the 2000's, I had a lot of exposure to these as a kid and seeing them always brings back fond memories
Very interesting,, love old single deck suburbans. Started working life at ETR Hornsby 1963.. bradfield cars ( wooden donk's), wooden trailers , Tullocjs Leeds forge cars. Not aign.of a double decker. Great crew at Hornsby. The days when a railway worked simple and functional. Great memories. 👌
Another fantastic video from the 90's of NSW, great shots
Fantastic footage from the good old days and when the loco hauled trains were still running.
Another great video mate
nice video mate
nice one mate
Great video mate
Great video mate, nice seeing double 49's on the fuel train. Also good to know that both those 49's are still around and in service, 4911 pretty much every day with SSR
Great video mate
Great video mate
Fantastic video mate, great set of locations and variety, great seeing all the loco hauled passenger trains too.
Amazing footage- thanks for posting- I never got to see any of this as a kid growing up in Adelaide…thank you for sharing
33:20 Ampol NTBF bitumen tankers are not something you see every day.
Thank you. I always thought that the Sandown line was just an industrial line. When I was young, I used to think that a job at the Dog Box would have been great.
Excellent video mate
Thanks for this. I’ve never seen the journey from Clyde to Sandown. Was that the Goodyear station that was passed after leaving Sandown ?
Yes-it went Sandown, Goodyear, Hardies, Rosehill. Apparently Goodyear closed before the other two and the line shut in 1991. I went by car looking for any signs of these stations about 15 years ago (when it was still open to freight)-couldn’t find any platforms at that time. Pity!
Nice vid! Slow speed on sandown line! Never rode on it but saw 2 car s set at sandown station. Jm
It's amazing how 30+ years later, *_everything_* has changed in some way! I remember everything in this video, just the way it was at the time!
Brilliant.
Excellent Job mate. Came out really good. Looking forward to seeing what other locos you do.
Brilliant mate, well done. Keen to see how you work on other locos as well!
I love the Tangara on the main line
Nice stuff! Hoping to see how you would weather a filthy 9F
Looks excellent! Keen to see more videos!
When SETS ran the "Last Electric Loco to Sandown", using 4615, I'm almost certain that it was the first and _only_ electric loco to ever work the line. Anyone ever heard of other electric locos working on the Sandown Line?
Remember my Dad working at Camelia station in the 70s and 80s and watching the Freight trains head down Sandown…
Fascinating historical footage.
As a guard we used to stable the race trains down the branch while Rosehill Races were on, some of the crews had a day at the races others had a sleep between runs..
The last time I would have shunted there was in 2002 on trip train T105. We usually had a single 80 class. Thanks for the upload 👍
Much appreciated - the Sundown line was one of the few Sydney metropolitan lines I didn't get to travel on. In my youth, I aimed to try all of them, especially the ones less traveled. For some reason I missed this one - thank you for uploading this.🙃
15:17 M2 freeway construction works at Epping. A lot of history to cut through in that embankment with that 1920s stanchion base and all. Not to mention all the homes they demolished leading up to it.
Outstanding
Another great video Allen. It certainly brings back memories.
Great collection and presentation Allan, well done. What a waste of taxpayers money only to have National Rail sold off in February 2002 after just 10 years of service. The Chullora footage brought back some memories.😉
The beginning of the end for electrically hauled Interstate Freight trains within the electrified area
You knew the day was coming, was only a matter of time. Sure did make things interesting though with the steel trains outta port Kembla though, never knew what was going to be on point.
Excellent video! Really loved seeing this.
