This was the very first Match of the Day to be broadcast in Colour on BBC1, and this was the first day, Saturday 15 November 1969 that BBC1 started broadcasting in Colour, although only in London (London Weekend), North (Yorkshire), North-West (Granada) and Midlands (ATV) and the ITV Regions in Brackets. Over the next two years did the rest of the UK could start broadcasting in Colour. There is the History of ITV on Wikipedia and BBC TV Timeline on here which shows the dates when the regions started broadcasting in Colour. However it does make me wonder if BBC1 were showing programmes in Colour before that for Test and Engineering Purposes, as a number of shows were being recorded before the start date of Full-Time Colour Broadcasting. With one of them being the Highlights of Manchester United v West Ham United from September 1969 being recorded in Colour. The same might have applied at London Weekend, with some of the games and studio inserts being recorded in Colour before Saturday 15 November 1969. The previous season two Match of the Days were broadcast in Colour on BBC2, which by late 1967 was a Colour Channel across the UK. November 2 1968. Chelsea 2 Manchester City 0 and March 29 1969 Manchester City 3 Stoke City 1. The former is unknown why they decided to change the channel for that match. The latter was because on BBC1 was the Eurovision Song Contest being broadcast from Madrid the same day and after the Contest, was highlights of Leicester City v West Bromwich Albion FA Cup Semi-Final which was a late programme change. As an aside The Grand National was broadcast in Colour for the first time on BBC2. However it does depend on how many people had access to Colour Television on the day of this game.

As a 10 year old Liverpool fan I vaguely remember this being my first cup final on TV. Thanks to CZcams I have watched BBC and ITV matches in full. It was a hard cup final. I went to the homecoming next day. The crowd was huge for the turnout. LFC did their best but Arsenal deserved to win. It was played in the day when all fans stayed behind and the sportsmanship from both teams was a different class in my opinion.

The League trophy Ron Yeats and the players had doing a lap of honour wasn't actually real. It was created by a family who lived near the ground. The original wasn't available so had to make do with this.

Just before the arrival of Kevin Keegan and Steve Heighway. Keegan in particular transformed the forward line; before that it was a case of lumping the ball into Toshack and hoping for the best. Now, if Keegan and Heighway were playing who knows what would have happened?

I'm a football man who's been going to the football for almost 50 years now however I must confess that I'm not a fan, but more importantly, I despise the LFC fanbase. Modern day Liverpool fans are so fickle and arrogant. Tbh I could say exactly the same about other clubs especially Villa, Arsenal and The Scum from Bellend Road. "Most" LFC fans have no "real" understanding of their history and how important Shanks was to them. They rave about Paisley, Dalglish and Gerrard when none of them can hold a candle to the great man Bill Shankly. Without Shanks, Paisley would never have been as successful and Dalglish wouldn't have had the career he did at Liverpool. Same could easily be said for Gerrard. Shanks had the personality , grit, character and brains to move mountains and motivate men. None of the other 3 had those skills in such abundance! Then there's this political nonsense which is spouted by Liverpool fans nowadays. It's football, not politics. Tbf Glasgow Celtic are going down the same road and it's very sad. I know many Celtic fans who hate where their club and it's fanbase are headed. Someone needs to grasp the nettle @ Anfield before too much damage is done. They have very quickly become THE most hated club in England, boo-ing the National Anthem and worse boo-ing the minutes silence which was reduced to just over 25 seconds, when Queen Elisabeth died! How can a club who RIGHTLY expects silence to remember the 97 Hillsborough Victims, not show the same respect back? If Shanks was around today I can assure you it would not be tolerated!

The Inter Cities Fairs Cup was not run by U.E.F.A. furthermore the Inter Cities Fairs Cup stemmed from Trade Fairs in Cities hence its name ... Only one Team could represent a City in that outdated competition. The U.E.F.A. Cup, meaning the Union European Football Association was much better and any team/club could represent a City, so a club was not barred just because another team qualified to play as well.

I was at this game & the return. Liverpool had a lot of possession but somehow never really threatened. Two things stand out to me. Leeds playing out all along the back four and back again as Liverpool pressed hard. So good the whole ground clapped. Commonplace now but defenders didn’t do that then. The other thing I remember is the goal. It was at the kop end and from where we were in the anfield road it looked like an OG

What is seldom mentioned is how canny Bill Shankly was spotting a player as a spectator. The January in 1969 was snow bound and an FA Cup 4rth Round game between Everton and Bristol Rovers was moved from a Saturday to midweek because of snow. Liverpool had a game on the Saturday. I was at Goodison for the FA Cup tie with snow piled around the perimeter, which under floodlights looked dramatic. It was reported Bill Shankly was in the Everton directors box, which he often visited. At the time Everton were going really well and faced a difficult task trying to score against a very strong defence from the third division. The two central defenders played brilliantly and kept Everton at bay. Joe Royle got a late goal to win the tie. But Larry Lloyd and Stuart Taylor had marked Joe out of the game. At the time Brian Labone was 29 and though England's first choice would need replacing. Bill Shankly saw enough that night to sign Larry Lloyd some months later. who went on to win titles with Liverpool and Notts Forest. Then in January 1970 Tranmere used Goodison Park for an FA Cup tie v Scunthorpe A player named Kevin Keegan was in the Scunthorpe side that night and may have escaped the attention of the Everton board, but probably not Liverpool who signed him in May 1971 And the rest is history !

My grandfather spoke about this era and often said that fans of both clubs would support each other whenever they played teams from the South. Sadly after Munich and the subsequent rise of United to become the first English team to win the European Cup, fans of Liverpool became resentful of United. This manifested in a particular song which was sung vociferously by Liverpool supporters ( and tbf some from other clubs). This is the precise reason that United fans suddenly viewed Liverpool very differently, along with Leeds. We hadn't seen this kind of "Sick Chanting" before in English football and let's not kid ourselves, Liverpool & Leeds United were very much at the forefront of this change! I'm absolutely certain that Shanks would have been totally disgusted by the behaviour of Liverpool fans during this period. Contrary to many commentators, the genuine hatred which is now apparent has nothing to do with the red herrings about competing cities or the Manchester Ship Canal. This relationship will never change in my lifetime and probably not for a very, very long time. I wish it had never happened but now it has, some things cannot be forgiven imo! ps.
