Blazin' Hot to Cool as a Cucumber: How I BEAT the Garage Heat! ❄️ (It ACTUALLY Works!)
Hey there, garage warriors and gearheads! I’m here to tackle a scorching problem: this South Carolina summer sun is a real doozy! My garage turns into a fiery furnace every day, making it unbearable to work on ANYTHING. Let me tell ya, it ain't pretty! But fear not, because I've got a solution so simple, even a knucklehead like me can do it!
In this video, I’m tackling that scorching garage door head-on with a super easy DIY insulation project. I'll be using a foam insulation kit (because who needs the fancy stuff, right?) to turn this heat wave into a cool breeze (well, maybe not a cool breeze, but definitely less hot than a habanero)
In this video, I’m gonna:
*Diagnose the problem: Witness the sizzling hotness of my garage door (it's enough to fry an egg!)
*Bust out the secret weapon: I'll unveil the magic of a DIY foam insulation kit. (Don't worry, it's easier than you think!)
*Install it like a BOSS: Okay, maybe not a total boss, but I'll get the job done with some personality mixed in.
*THE BIG REVEAL: I'll measure the temperature difference after insulation installation. (Let's just say, it's a game-changer!)
**But wait, there's more! I'll also see if this nifty trick throws off the garage door spring balance.**
By the end of this video, you'll be ready to transform your own fiery garage into a chill zone! So grab your favorite frosty cold beverage (because let's face it, you'll need it after working in that heat!). Leave a comment below and let me know your favorite ways to keep things cool, then hit that subscribe button, and let's get started!

Every time you double insulation R-value, you cut the rate of heat loss in half. That fact doesn't change, even when you increase insulation from R-100 to R-200. More insulation by 2X always reduces the rate of heat flow by half.
More insulation = More resistance to heat flow = Lower energy bills (ideally). This is the basic principle. As you add more insulation, it gets harder and harder for heat to escape your home in the winter and enter your home in the summer. This translates to using less energy for heating and cooling, saving you money.
The catch: The benefit of adding insulation decreases as you add more. The first few inches of insulation make a big difference in reducing heat flow. However, as you keep adding layers, the additional benefit gets smaller and smaller.
The point of diminishing returns: There's a sweet spot where adding more insulation becomes less cost-effective. The extra energy savings you get might not outweigh the cost of the additional insulation and installation.
At that point, it would be better to focus on air sealing and weatherstripping.

      It depends on the controller you have. If it's the curtis controller, there's a link to that one in the description. If it's one of the other controllers, there's a facebook group (ExCar/Bintelli/REVO) with a member (Gnarly Matt) that makes the cables. I think you then have to get the software from buggies gone wild or another source.

    If they aren't permanently attached in that kit a thin layer of radiant barrier between the foam and the metal makes an even bigger difference. Just the basic double reflective .19" stuff. It's about $10 a roll I think it took me 2.5 rolls for about the same size door.

    • @oftenwrongparadigm
      @oftenwrongparadigm Před 17 dny

      In my very brief research online, I kept seeing the radiant barrier needing to have an air gap to reflect the heat back to. I didn't really feel like getting into the science of radiant barriers, figuring out how to create that air gap correctly, and the science on foam seemed pretty straightforward. I might be interested in doing a comparison of the two. Grab a single roll and do half the door, see what the difference is from one side to the other. Now I'm wondering, would the radiant barrier foil taped to the interior side of the door, with the foam in the middle, make a big difference? Basically one big strip capping off the interior cavity of the door with the foam inside.

    • @OmegaGamingNetwork
      @OmegaGamingNetwork Před 17 dny

      @@oftenwrongparadigm I don't know about the foil tape, but I do know I used the stuff that is basically like foil bubble wrap. I don't have any particular air gap beyond what it creates for itself. My setup is the metal of the door, the Radiant barrier and then the foam just right on top of it. I never measured it, but the overall temperature in my garage seemed quite a bit lower after the barrier than before. I'm down in Ga, so sometimes it is difficult to tell which is the bigger problem, the heat or the humidity. It certainly would be interesting to see if that actually makes a real difference or if it was just placebo.

    • @oftenwrongparadigm
      @oftenwrongparadigm Před 19 dny

      Possibly. Depends on if you want to try to reuse or repurpose them. If not repurposing them later, you could cut them in half easily and remove them. They don't need glue or anything to hold them in place. If trying to repurpose them, you would need to be very careful when removing them. A pry bar half way up the panel should be able to create the same bend on the side to pop them out. But, each garage door will have slightly different measurements between the vertical bars. So, they may not be a great fit for the next door.

    I find most garage doors, even just professional installed leaks A LOT at the top and sides. My phone has Infiray thermal camera in it so i check a lot of things for fun 😅 And every one leaks, and not just a little! I adjusted mine and at work and it got much better but still between every linked panel there is often a gap that isn't necessary that let's in large spiders and bugs aswell...

    • @tullgutten
      @tullgutten Před 19 dny

      And using those contactless thermometers you MUST KNOW about thermal emissivity, that every metal that isn't painted is more like a mirror and you measure yourself or the room instead of what you point at, aluminium and copper is the absolute worst, even when looking very dull and matt a Thermal camera sees it as a mirror and it is very interesting to see 😅 One trick is to use black electrical tape or masking tape on shiny metals and surfaces. And always have a slight angle like 80° instead of 90 to prevent measuring yourself, but not too much. And also when your distance from the wall/door increases the area the temperature is measured over gets very large very quick, typical at 30cm away is 5-10 cm diameter circle but at one meter or more you measure the average of maybe 60-100 cm diameter! It's listed in the manual or maybe on the sides of the termometer. If you doo a lot around the home for improving insulation and airtightness i recommend buing a infiRay P2 Pro thermal camera module for your phone, it shows EVERYTHING! at a high detail for air leak and thermal insulation problems

    It was 124* here today!!!! Bullhead City AZ. I did this insulation 2 years ago and it really doesn't do squat when the afternoon sun is hitting my garage doors. I hit my metal framing on the door with my heat gun today and it was almost 170* and that radiates into the garage. My next step is to get some 4" thick foam and glue that to the metal door frames, might have to do a little trimming for clearance when the door is opening and closing as the hinges are only about 2.5" -- -- I put a 48,000 BTU ductless AC in my garage just because it made sense LOL.

    Maybe there's a way you can lower the rear of the roof by cutting/splicing 1" off the rear supports. If you're into trigonometry, I found this on the internet. Don't know how accurate it is. Estimate the turn radius: 1) measure the length of the wheel base (distance from front axle to rear axle). Mine is 8 ft. 2) measure the angle that the front wheel makes between straight ahead and full turn to the left (or right). Mine is 30° 3) get the tangent of the angle in step 2. Mine is . 577 4) divide #1 by #3. I got 13.86 5) add the width of the machine to #4. I got 18.86 It could be close depending upon how accurate the angle is measured. The specs on my ride says = 18 ft. turning radius. The turn radius is measured to the outermost sidewall of the outside wheel. I wonder how close this internet formula works for your machine or others who may want to try this.

    I have 2016 EZGO RXV Freedom Limited and just installed an EcoBattery 51V 105ah. For adjusting the Curtis controller, is it best to utilize a handheld programmer or the PC model you demonstrated? Currently, my cart takes off quick and jerks to stop increasing speed at 19.5mph

      I like the PC programmer better, just a personal preference. They both should do the same thing though. Just make sure it's not a limited programmer. You will want one that has OEM or Dealer level access. Good luck!

    Everyone needs to realize this software will not allow you to change all parameters on your cart. Some features are locked even in OEM mode. Every cart is different. Curtis uses a proprietary software called Integrated Toolkit that is impossible to get. Only very large OEMs can get it. The only other option is to flash the memory with a firmware upgrade, again impossible to get.

Even though the vid seems like it's a quick process, I think it took about 3 weeks for me to get these bars done, and about the same to do the version 2 of the winch bumper. The hitch only took a few hours... but I forgot to paint it :D

Alas, the miter gauge slides horizontal behind the other stuff in a slot, top faces the motor. The gauge cannot be locked at 90° to insert, but has to be at 90° to push in all the way.

    Just bought this saw last week. Assembly of the legs a little tricky as the instructions are a little hard to make out. But no big deal. It is easy to fold up and move, I have to work out of a yard shed and just move it outside. The power button has to be held for a second to stay on. I do stuff that requires shallow cuts or bevel cuts. The plastic plate around the blade isn't very ridged and a little warped which make making those type of cuts hard to make consistent. Need to solve that problem, going to try to make a new one from aluminum plate or acrilic.

      @oftenwrongparadigm Před 3 měsíci

      In the description of this vid, there is this link to the now unavailable alarm. I'll try to get a link to the video where I show the wiring and splice wires when I get home in a few days. czcams.com/video/4xUOhLUNb2U/video.htmlsi=GV9lSG7o6ufUXX-N This one seems to be the new version of the alarm. It's a little different, but appears to wire up pretty much the same way. amzn.to/3JaB0lK There are some other alarms for motorcycles that will work too, but you may need to do some trial and error work to adapt to the cart. If I have the time and a few extra bucks in a couple weeks, I might buy that new viper alarm to test it out and see what the differences are. Also, it'll give me the opportunity to do a better alarm installation video.

    • @oftenwrongparadigm
      @oftenwrongparadigm Před 3 měsíci

      That is a kill-a-watt meter, from harbor freight. hftools.com/app93519 looks like they're $27.99 Right now. I'm not sure I paid that much for it, probably caught it on sale and/or used a coupon. Mine is a 2022, very little has changed to the current model year that I've noticed. I went into the main showroom in Charleston about a month ago, just to check, out of curiosity. The main differences in the new carts, unique ignition key that also opens the glove box and now it comes with the pull straps for the back seat. I still like my pull straps better 😁 They also have more/better lithium battery options than when I purchased mine. But that kind of makes sense as more companies now make them.

    • @oftenwrongparadigm
      @oftenwrongparadigm Před 4 měsíci

      I searched around on my cart for a while now, infrequently over many months. At this point I'm either going to say I haven't figured it out yet or camber can't be adjusted. Really wish it wasn't this way. I don't have a camber issue at this point, really hope I never do. The way the cart is put together, there doesn't appear to be an easy way to make the camber adjustable.

      @oftenwrongparadigm Thank you for your efforts! I've come to the same conclusion, so I'll be taking it back to the dealership and let them figure it out since that's what a warranty is for. I just don't have a lot of confidence in my dealership, but they'll have to find a way. One of the Icon assembly factories is located very nearby, so there's always that.

    Hi man, good video. Can you tell me what rating fuse you used for this converter, I'm guessing 10 amps because the converter is 12v 10amps, but if it's not, let me know. Or it depends on the device you are connecting.

    • @oftenwrongparadigm
      @oftenwrongparadigm Před 4 měsíci

      May not be the most safe thing, the only fuse I had was a 30 amp fuse going to the converter. I would highly suggest a 10 amp fuse though, and I should have probably swapped mine out a long time ago... At the fuse box, I think the biggest one is 10 amps. Most are either three or five amps though for small LED lights, light strips, alarm.

    • @oftenwrongparadigm
      @oftenwrongparadigm Před 4 měsíci

      I got a copy on a CD when I ordered the programmer off of amazon. Contact the seller if you didn't get a copy and the software was part of the package. There's some now shipping with a usb drive with the software. If you got a cable only from someone who makes cables, they probably can't send you the software without the police showing up at their door eventually... so you may need a more pirate mind to get the software. I opted not to do this, as I value my computers health, and I don't want to invite undesirables to hijack my digital life. But if you are looking for the risk, there are online forums you can join, and download the software for free. Or, just click the link in the description and buy a cable and software from amazon. Good luck!

    Something is wrong, before I watched this video I checked my alignment and it was significantly toed out but handled okay. I wanted better tire wear so I made the alignment straight like you are showing here. At high speeds you almost lose control, the cart absolutely won't go in a straight line. It is so bad an unexperienced driver could possibly flip the cart over. I'm cosidering going back to a moderate amount of toe out or possibly toe in like cars have. I have a friend that says his does the same thing but we haven't checked his alignment yet.

    • @oftenwrongparadigm
      @oftenwrongparadigm Před 5 měsíci

      Well that's not good. Id probably toe it back out a little then. I wouldn't suggest toe in on a cart. I tried it for a few days, made turns difficult and increased turn radius.
