My Fathers' Land new book from Carl E. Feather
My Fathers' Land is a book about coming full circle in Appalachia; of immigrants from the Palatinate and their search for land in the high Alleghenies of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. It is a memoir of leaving home and returning after nearly seven decades, of faith and challenges to that faith, and, most of all, of the power of family. The author traces his family's roots on both the paternal and maternal sides to Germany, Switzerland and France, then examines their movements to lands in the Alleghenies, particularly Somerset County, Pennsylvania, and Preston and Tucker counties, West Virginia. Illustrated with many photographs and maps, this book will be of great interest to family historians as well as the casual reader with an interest in immigration history, family memoirs, Appalachia, and the power of the Christian faith in everyday lives.

Gettysburg Remembered at Mount Union Church
zhlédnutí 259Před 10 měsíci
On July 1, 2023, the Mount Union Church in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, hosted a program of remembrance for the 160th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Soldiers and civilians from both Confederate and Union perspectives presented their stories; period music added to the authenticity, as did the setting. Mount Union dates back to 1861, a fitting site for this remembrance

I discovered this reel of 16mm film in a friend's box of miscellaneous from an estate sale. These appear to be outakes from family movies; there was a great deal of splicing together that had to be performed before the reel was transferred. I have no idea of the family's name, but I believe that the location is in Cleveland, Ohio, wealthy neighborhood or Geauga County, Ohio. Music from the Inte...

In the 1870s a migration of Finnish workers to the newly completed ore and coal handling facilities at Ashtabula Harbor, Ohio, began. The Lake Erie town would eventually become home to hundreds of Finnish families, who settled along the Oak and Cherry streets section of The Harbor (west side of Ashtabula River). This documentary presents the story of the immigration and integration of these har...

Really annoys me that it took so long to get a new high school built in Ashtabula. Would have been nice if myself and the rest of the Class of '97 had been able to go to a shiny new school like Lakeside, instead of a decaying, rotting dump like AHS and Harbor.

I have two issues with this video. 1. The Kent State shootings didn't happen until five years after this incident. May 4th 1970. Someones memory seems to be a bit foggy. 2. One must ask who the real criminals are in this scenario? Seems to me these two under cover cops and this councilman needed to be brought up on charges of conspiracy to incite a riot and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud. But hey, at least they got a good chuckle out of it. A**Holes!

Clark Brocht does a phenomenal job at preserving this Civil War era church and this particular service was amazing to attend. The decorations on the evergreen and singing of Christmas carols, as well as the attendees in their Civil War attire, made this Christmas church service very special.

That’s old school burning out temporary props when felling a chimney. Notch needs to be well past halfway. These days you could just cable pull the temporary props out with a machine. Also pull the chimney with another long cable up as high as you could attach it. Timber!!!😂

So glad I stumbled across this documentary. My Papa Salmen lived and worked very hard in the harbor down the coal docks and always talked about the saunas. He was the essence of Sisu. I grew up in the harbor and we had Hil Mak very often. Watching the video was so bittersweet. My Gram was Hungarian but learned how to make Finnish dishes. I can still remember the wonderful smell of her baking Nissua bread. It's tricky to make she tried teaching me once. Let's just say I was better at watching her and testing them out.
