Seagate Mach.2 Dual Actuator HDDs | Investigating How They Actually Work
In this video I'm investigating the Seagate Mach.2 dual actuator HDD technology. These drives have the potential to make a massive leap forward in HDD performance both for bandwidth and IOPS. We'll examine what Seagate has to say about their technology and I will share with you my thoughts. Also, we'll setup one of these Mach.2 drives in my server to check out how it actually works. Then, we'll run some benchmarks on the individual halves and also on a RAID-0 composed of both "halves" using Linux mdadm. Finally, I'll give my thoughts on the benchmark results and considerations for using these Mach.2 drives in RAID parity setups like RAID-5/6 or ZFS raidz1/2/3.

This past Monday, April 15th, 2024, the AlmaLinux project announced the release of AlmaLinux 9.4 Beta. I bought a 9211 but not from you - if I'd seen this video first I would have gone to your store. Noted for next time. Thanks for making content like this. Do you think an LSI 9211 8i needs a fan attached to the card? I have an Antec P101 which has 3 front-facing fans which should blow across the entire motherboard, but I'm concerned about the hard drive cages blocking some of the air. I'm assuming if the HBA overheats, I'll get some type of warning/error, rather than permanently damaging my card (or worse, introducing errors into my data)?

    I recently purchased two Precision 7910 workstations and got some SAS drives to put in them. This video was *EXACTLY* the tutorial I required to update the SAS controller firmware and BIOS which took me from not being able to use the 14TB drives I purchased to now being able to use them. Thank you very much. The only thing you didn't have was links to the firmware downloads, but I was able to find those. Your whole series on the Precision 7910 is useful to me. Much appreciated.

    Exactly what I've been looking for. We recently had two HP DL360 G9s refuse to boot after starting an upgrade process and swapping out the CR2032 battery on the board *seemed* to be the solution to get them to boot. Addendum to this video. The PCIe slot is fixed to have a max of 35 watts power delivery. Not the standard 75 watts of the normal slot. So be aware of this, if you do put a GPU in with the intention of gaming. As the 85/90 watt power bricks cannot handle the power draw, and shuts down the machine, once a game has started. I tried a Quadro K1200 HHHL card. Shut down within 5-10 seconds of any game loading. The T620 Pluses have the same PCIe limitation.

    Hello. I hope you still offer replyes to commets :) I did exactly what you did, but i have a problem. I can see the drives in the raid controller, but i cannot boot from the drive connected like this. Windows is start booting, but then it crushes. If i connect the ssd to normal sata, it works just fine, but when is connected with the blue cabble into SAS port, it crushes while booting. Do you know what it may cause this? I also tried to connect the ssd, directly to the blue cable , without the 4x bay and the same problem. Also, when i connect the drive like this, i can't boot in bios anymore. What i could figure out, is that the bay it loses power when windows try to boot. it purely loses power at all. I presume the ssd gets the same problem when connected without the bay. Thank you very much.

    I wouldn’t say it’s peaking once again. It has a long way to go before that happens. There are more places to watch than ever before . They still have the ability to catch fire someday with the right mix of celebrity and storylines that one day could get them at their peak. From 1997-2002 weekly average was between 4.5-5.5 million viewers weekly for Raw. That’s more than Raw and Smackdown combined today. The product is nowhere close to that today. I think moving the product to Netflix and being more edgy will exponentially increase the viewership and popularity.

    Wish this awesome info applied to my situation. My Cisco UCS C240 M4 has 12 SAS drives attached to the controller and all 12 are seen and functional. The problem is, these drives are storage drives setup in a Raid 6 configuration and the server boots off of a couple of Intel SSD's that are setup in a Raid to protect the OS. These two SSD's are plugged into a couple of SATA sockets on a PCIe board, which is separate from the SAS controller. The BIOS does not show these drives as bootable. When I try to load Windows, the install gets to a point where it asks where to install Windows and neither of the SSD's are in the list. Matter of fact, the only thing on the list is the USB dongle where the Windows installer lives. And of course, Windows can't and shouldn't be installed there. Ah, the joys of servers.

    I have a pile of old hard drives in odd sizes. All I want to do is throw together a big ol NAS to store junk in. I'm not an enterprise level operation. I'm not making it for anything else. There's nothing critical on this data. It's all duplicated on my desktop (the majority of it is also sitting on Dropbox and Google Drive!) But whenever I want to do something that is not the *absolutely correct* way, Home Lab/Home Networking communities will refuse to answer a question, and tell you what you *should* be doing instead. It's honestly insufferable. The warning you made at the start of this video, and the term "forbidden arts" really just says it all. Thanks for treating people like adults.

    Old video but I got kind of excited when I read the title because I've been trying to figure out how to get my Cisco UCS C240 M4 to recognize either of its Intel SSD boot drives. When I tried installing Windows, it got all the way to where it wanted to know which drive to install and it gave me a choice of only the USB stick where the Windows installer lived and nothing else. And of course, it won't install there, even if I wanted it to. The Avago SAS controller does not show either of the Intel drives, only the 12 HGST data drives. Not surprising since neither SSDs are attached to the Avago SAS controller and are instead plugged into a PCIe card. I can't find them in the BIOS either. Of course, none of this means much since I have little to no knowledge of servers. I just recently acquired this server as a broken unit. I repaired it and installed two blank Intel 240GB S3520 SSDs in the PCIe SATA slots. I have no real plans for this thing, just wanted to play around with it and maybe learn something. I do have a lot of desk top PC experience though. And I stayed in a Holiday Inn once or twice (one needs to be of a certain age to understand what that means. Lol).

      I only respond to comments on old videos if your account has a cat avatar... ;-P I don't know what type of SAS controller you have, but if it is a RAID controller, you need to configure some VDs (Virtual Disks) and perhaps designate them as bootable. If you have a HBA type controller, then you need to follow this video and designate some of those drives as bootable. You then need to make sure your server BIOS/UEFI firmware is configured to include the SAS controller among the list of boot devices. If you want to boot off hose SSDs attached to something else, you'll need to make sure that something else is also on the list of boot devices. Hope that helps!

    • @Waltkat
      @Waltkat Před 12 dny

      @@ArtofServer Thanks for replying. Greatly appreciated. The controller is a Cisco 12G SAS Modular Raid Controller. It also shows Avago Megaraid, which I interpret to be the firmware? It is currently setup as a Raid 6. The two Intel SSD's are on a separate card and plugged into it's own PCIe socket on the motherboard. The system BIOS doesn't show them at all. When I got the server, it had two different SSD's plugged in and it would boot up into those drives, but I can't do anything with it because it boots into Windows Server and asks for a password which I don't have. So those two drives were removed and replaced with two different SSD's, which are no longer recognized. If you don't have the time to help figure this out with me, don't worry about it. I'll figure it out eventually. The unfortunate thing is, this is a discontinued server model and Cisco no longer supports it, so most of the documentation for it has been removed from their website. Or at least it's all some place that I can't find.

    HI, I am very new to SAS but not new to computers. Been building my own PC Since the the 80's. I seen MFM, RLL, ESDI, SCSI, IDE, SATA, NVMe drives. Drives where you literally have to program the controller, set jumpers, and use debug to setup. Brings back lots of good memory and fun times. I won't say how old I am. However, I am a little lost in the Enterprise Server world. Hope you can help make a recommendation. I have a Home Server used as a Media Center Data Server. I have a total of 27 HDD ranging from 4TB to 20TB. Right now I can only have 8 online at at time as I only have a 8 Bay SATA to USB 3.0 Hard Drive Enclosure Non-RAID / JBOD connected to a Mini ITX ASUS MB running Ubuntu / SAMBA. I am looking to get into a 24 Bay SAS and seriously need to minimize cost. External: I was hoping to just get an External Enclosure but this seems hard to find on a low budget, plus the external cards & cables seem more pricy than the internal cards and cables. Internal: I also see some 4U 24 Bay Chassis on Amazon starting around 499.00. Unknown brand name. So is it cheaper to build the whole computer in 1 chassis or are there External 24 bay chassis out there that support the common connector types on a budget?

    Wow ... How is possible to write on disk more then disk protocol can handle? 😅 Was want to order from your store so many time but import to europe is insane costly...

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer Před 17 dny

      LOL ... it's becoming harder and harder to import things to European countries. They keep passing laws that make it costly, or even prohibitive. I can no longer sell to UK due to some safety labeling law. I can no longer sell to Germany because of some package licensing laws that isn't worth the cost and effort.

    Have you any experience upgrading an eight bay R720 to a sixteen bay backplane (with sas expander and cage)?

    It's just a pity that they don't offer a version with numpad.

    • @ArtofServer

      Yeah, that would be cool, but this is also smaller footprint.

    • @angelsjoker8190

      @@ArtofServer Yes, but in an office setting where you have to crunch in a lot of numbers, a numpad makes life so much easier. They should have both versions. I'll probably buy the wireless version (because of the possibility to connect it to two different devices via dongle an BT) and look for an extra standalone numpad. I even fancy the idea of buying a replacement keyboard for the T5xx series that have the numpad and somehow build a DIY desktop keyboard out of it, but I fear to be a bit too tech illiterate to build it.

      I've never had a overheating problem with these. Maybe some SSDs run hotter? The one's I've used actually run pretty cool to the touch.

    Ok so I know this is a 4 year old video. Just getting into servers. How do you supply power to your additional HDDs?

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer Před 20 dny

      Depends on your setup and type of HDDs. If you have a backplane of some sort, usually you have to supply power to it. If using bare drives, SATA drives just take SATA power plugs. SAS drives usually use a SFF-8482 connector and you supply power to the cable to power the SAS drives.

    On this board PCH temp seems to be quite high for some reason Mine rises to 70C with the cover on but if I remove the cover it drops to 61C I have another board the same and it stays at 48C They both use the same CSE847 case and fans Any idea what could be happening?

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer Před 20 dny

      So you have 2 identical boards in identical 847 chassis and the temps are different? I might check the heatsink and see if perhaps it's not making proper contact? And while at it, refresh the thermal paste.
