BSA Otter

After running the BSA Otter website for ten years, I thought it time to make more use of my CZcams Channel, to show not only what we do on this Classic Motorcycle Trials site, but also the other things that interest me in the construction of motorcycle frames, history of growing up in the fifties, on a North Oxfordshire farm here in the UK, and also my love of cooking. These are all featured on the BSA Otter website... and will be on this Charlie Prescott CZcams channel...
Metisse Swinging Arm Modification
We wanted to fit a Rickman rear hub into this Metisse you would think it would fit but it would not without bending and reshaping it, and the adding a small amount, and realigning the arm... But Rich did the job and it was not easy...

Another Frozen Seat Post...

So we have another frozen seat post, and this one does not want to move... Another job for our "Beast" of a workshop tool, will it work this time... I am amazed it did work for after heating the frame twice it still would not budge... until we used the "Beast"...I have read that someone is now turning a spiral groove down the length of the post that breaks up the surface area and helps drain mo...

PAR Quadracycle fix Part Four...

So part four of the PAR Quaracycle fix, and fitting the wheel bearings seemed easy until we realised that the bearings were not Metric but English 1 3/8" x 5/8" x 5/16" ... so I had to machine up spacers to take up the slack on the shafts and then drill holes to secure the retaining nuts... 2 1/2 hours later on a ten minute job. Time deadline again...

Brother started to build a Metisse Scrambles bike by buying a frame, he then bought another rolling chassis, you can see where this is going... bought a Triumph engine 650 TR6, wrong frame so had to buy a T100 engine as well, so now needed a frame for the the TR6 engine. I was given a Villiers 9e engine so did a check on the engine number, it turned out to be from a Sun Trials bike .Very few of these were ever built, I checked the net but could not find one. After watching another channel of a well respected and very skilled cycle and motorcycle frame builder doing a spot of glass-fibre seat making for a Triumph Cub, I thought I will put that footage I took in 2019 on, to show that glass-fibreing is not easy and you need to learn the tricks and I am still doing that, and started with my first motorcycle fuel (Gas) tank in 1961...

Foxwatch… People moan about my garden and I am too old to mess about with it in the winter months. But has you can see it gives sanctuary to the wildlife we now have in towns and a peaceful resting place for a few hours… I was brought up in the country, and this is now my bit that I have brought to the town… Much more later I have a lot of footage still, and I am sure they will be back…

What are the advantages of the Otter frame, apart from using mainly straight tubes?
Gerry...The large tubes make for a more stable frame with less twisting, also being of thinner gauge tube saves weight, also has the advantage of being able to carry the engine oil within the frame tubes...
Very tempting , my '65 AJS 16 weighs 420 lb. , If i lived closer i would get you to build me one , but i live on the west coast of British Columbia .

Hi Eric... We use Trials Tyres (Tires) for the sport of Motorcycle Observed Trials, and Nobblies on Old Scrambles and Moto-Cross bikes...

Matchy Metisse is a favorite of mine. Is there a source of new hubs for this era of bikes
Hi Gary.. there are several hubs that are available to fit and be a good job on a Metisse. The ones that are very popular are front AMC full width hubs IE, AJS Matchless and Triumph Adventurer hubs both back and front and "Crinkle cut " BSA QD Gold Star type hubs for the rear... Hope this helps you...

Paul we are still considering the opptions, we may build some frame kits...when we have time later...

Hi great job, i have built a CT90 framed special with 140 engine but having problems with carb i have tried 2 x VM22 and cant get them set up i have gone back to the original Molkt carb which is usable but has a slight bogging from tick over, have you any advice
Hi Richard ...We have tried several carbs and Inlet manifold options but have got a good VM22 on it now... Brian built a full volume air-box that sits under the Tank cover as the fuel is carried in the frame... This seems to help the airflow considerably ... But we are still learning after four years...

James, The Mini-Otter motorcycle brand name is registered with the DVLA here in the UK , and there have been two of the little bikes registered in the Isle Of Man and through the DVLA. We have now built seven frames and these all are being built into complete machines... But we are still undecided whether to do a production run of machines, we will see what happens in the Spring of 2022...
With the sump oil pump hanging down there is room each side for frame rails. It would be hardly any heaveyer. And would stiffen the frame better than a sump guard
Adrian there is not a need for a sump guard only for engine protection from rocks, and no need for bottom frame rails as the engine becomes a structural element being triangular mounted using a mounting on the top tube to the cylinder head, this also stops engine vibration...

Hi Gary... I am using the Modified Bantam frame I did a few years back.. but now need to get it built up over the next few weeks, as I need to try a NEW cylinder head on the bike and get it tested . So over the next few weeks we will do a weeks video on the build up.. OK thanks for the comment...
