I am thinking the coal shoveling is a generic sound taken from the coal being on the floor. This loco has a bunker in front of the cab and over the firebox. Chances are the coal never gets on the floor and is shoveled from the bottom of the bunker or a box below it, a differing sound? Also for all steam locos that do not have a self leveling bunkers they have to level or push forward the coal load as the bunker is emptied. (Very dangerous job when under the wire.) One to add in the future?

Sorry for the delay in replying, I needed to confer with our sound engineer to make sure I had all the facts to hand. The coal shoveling sounds on the Hawthorn Leslie sound profile were recorded on a Hawthorn Leslie locomotive and are 100% authentic!

@@dapoltv4705 I thought I was wrong when I was watching 'Footplate trip on Hawthorn Leslie 3931/1938' vid. But this had a rear bunker and was a 0-6-0. If you look at the 0-4-0 it has a bunker over the firebox in-front of the cab. The model also has boxes behind the cab front below the front bunker and on the floor of the cab and below what appear to be stiffening plates for the models (or real) cab. The timing of the firing cycle would be different between loco types and the one on the model sounds like the 0-6-0?

  • @ngaugefouroaksstreetstatio6932

Question, has Dapol ever considered making a short video for each loco when released showing an un boxing and fitting a decoder , lubricating bogies, accessories etc. In some cases a video would work far better than an instruction sheet which assumes familiarity with various things. Recently i received a new N gauge Western, it took me 20 minutes to remove the body shell and to swap out a bogie it felt like I was about break something serious other than the bogie frame. I'm sure I'm not alone in this observation.

DAFT DAPOL & THEIR WHACKY WIRING. Pretty looking but operationally pretty stupid ! Like all their previous semaphores, the wiring method provided is extremely limited. All you can do is individually change the signal between "go" & "stop" !! Indeed there isn't even the option of having a control panel repeater to show you whether the signal is at danger or clear. Not helpful if you can't see the signal from where you are operating !!! In real life the semaphore signals on each track controlled by each signal box had to be operated in a specific order ! The most important semaphore was the "Distant", which was the first signal a Driver saw as he approached a signaled area. The Distant if at "Caution" told the driver, one or more of the following "stop" signals is at Danger, so be prepared to stop !!! If the Distant was at "clear" this told the Driver that ALL "stop" signals controlled by this signalbox were also at "clear". So the Driver could proceed at line speed in the knowledge he had a totally clear line, ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE AREA COVERED BY THIS SIGNALBOX. A fact some modelers totally fail to understand !!! Indeed to comply with the basic fundamental rule of semaphore signalling, which was: "ONLY ONE train may be present on each track (called a "Running Line") in the WHOLE area covered by the signalbox. Irrespective of how many signals were actually provided. Which reveals that semaphore, specifically FORBIDS trains to follow each other from signal to signal. Which is why it is known as "ABSOLUTE block" The "NEW" junction signals, as seen in this programme, appear to be even DAFTER than their previous signals. For the simple reason these models are intended for a "two route junction". Obviously in real life the driver can only take ONE route, and only ONE of the two signals could be showing a "Clear" line. Both the signals would be "interlocked" with the point giving access to either route, so that ONLY the signal for the route set could be cleared. A Fact that could have easily been included electrically in that oversized box at the base of these models, but isn't !!! I bought a large number of these semaphores from GAUGEMASTER, on my way back overseas. Only too discover when I reached home that the wiring options shown where absolute NONSENSE. The options included wiring them via a "Relay". But this was totally idiotic, as you still needed a "biased mini toggle switch" to control the relay ! So the relay did NOTHING, except do what the switch was doing, as it couldn't replace the switch, IMBECILIC ! As this isn't the only DAFT wiring I have found in DAPOL products, I'm increasingly of the impression NO one at DAPOL, actually understands electricals, & certainly not signalling. Indeed DAPOLS semaphores appear to assume two things by their production. One everybody uses DCC, and two DCC modelers know NOTHING about signalling. Which is INSULTING to the customer !!!!!!! For the Record, I am an ex Railway Engineer, who has worked with many railways around the world, for over 40 years, from BR to New Zealand, & in many railway departments, including signalling ! Happy Modelling 😝.
