HOW I TRAIN MY LAB RETRIEVERS And newly acquired Springer Spaniel (8 weeks as of 2/10/22)
I DO NOT CLAIM TO BE PRO TRAINER, THESE ARE MY FIRST GUNDOGS, I WATCH, READ, LEARN FROM OTHERS PARTICULARLY IN THE FIELD WHILST WORKING THE DOGS. I HAVE HAD A COUPLE OF LESSONS FROM A TRIALLING MAN.
YOU NEVER STOP LEARNING !
It goes without saying, I will obviously reply to a question if someone wants to know how I got my Dogs to do a particular thing.
My gundogs are Labrador Retrievers although I plan a Springer Spaniel soon!
My videos are showing the fun and games in training and working 2 dogs from pups to trained Working Gundogs (to my best ability!).
These Videos are amateur, warts and all not always shot perfectly, it will always be about the dogs first!
I hope you enjoy my videos and please let me know of any suggestions to improve the channel.
All the best ,ColinđŸ
The Joy Of Bringing Up A Pup
The Joy of bringing up a pup, after a few weeks I certainly want them to wind on another couple of months! It is a very important part of their upbringing so letting them be pups is important mind you. Looking forward to the future with this wee geezer. #springerspaniel #puppy #gundogtraining

Springer Spaniel, What is he like at 12 weeks old?
Lovely video. We are with our 10 week old second lab pup right now and I can relate to wanting things to fast forward a couple of months! That said, it is a joy to watch him start to explore. Thankfully, our older lab has no interest in him yet, so I'm not struggling to get the pup's attention as much.
Yes, the attention thing is sometimes an issue, I regularly remove him from the pack to do stuff one on one. Though, itâs certainly been the case with dog 2&3, they learn from each other, particularly stuff like walking as a team âto healâ.
@@northlawgundogs5254 Definitely. A friend of mine told me about two dogs they had while he was growing up. The eldest died and they realised the youngest was useless at heel walking solo; it had just been following the other!
Great wee video, enjoyed that, deserves more views..
Colins videos are brilliant. Watched them from the start with the auld fella and genuinely one of the reasons i got my Lab and have subsequently worked her in the beating line and done a little bit of picking up. He does deserve more views and subscribers, hope his subscribers keep going up. Quite therapeutic aswell, his choice of background music is always good. As someone who doesnt really like human beings and would rather spend my time away with my dog, Watching someone spending time with just him and his 4 dogs i enjoy. Also picked up a few training exercises thst Colins done that i then incorporated into training my own dog.
Awww shucks, thanks BoysâŠ.can you feel the heat from my red face from there. Truth be told Iâd love to make a living from anything to do with dogs. When you see some of the âdog trainersâ out there đ± I wonder if I could make a go of it .
@@northlawgundogs5254 Colin I'd say diffinaitly yes, I know what you mean about other trainers , you have the skills and you only have to look at your dogs to see.
Bravo! He is holding well and is keen as mustard.
Your putting me in the mood for a stringer đ hes looking good.
Your not seeing him when he is being a pain in the ass đ
Hi Colin. 4 cracking dogs you got there. Pups lovely settled in straight away lol Jean
Thanks Jean, aye, he struts about (or waddles about) like he owns the gaff !
When all you can see is the wagging tail...â€â€â€
Hi-Iâm here from Nova Scotia, flying back home this Saturday ( Jun 15). Iâve had a Springer in the past - wondering if by any chance you have a puppy available, or an adult dog that is finished being bred , that you would be willing to place with / sell ?
I donât have anything no but I think, a few days ago anyway, the breeder of my pup had a couple left. I donât want to post her contact details on here but if your on Instagram contact me and I will private message you back with her details.
Lovely video †I wonder if you could add captions for the deaf of hearing? I would really like to know what you are saying about training the dogs. Thank you friend.
I will look into the auto caption thing again, people and Ai have issues with the accent ... plus I am not the clearest auditor at the best of times !! Thanks for your support.
hi again, the 'subtitle' function is working on my videos in the 'settings' facility' but like I say not totally accurate in picking up my accent.
Enzos a wee beauty and lucky to have you to give him a great life.
ah brilliant colin he is a wee cracker
Hi Colin. Firstly I enjoy your vids. Seen them all I wondered what do you feed your dogs on as they allways look good. Thanks jean
Hi Jean, food wise, they are on kibble, nothing overly expensive ÂŁ22-25 / 15kg sack price range ! Dr Johns range, Skinners field and trial in the game season. What ever they have there is quite often chicken off cuts or pigeon breast (Iâve a friend that does Pest Control for farmers) but probably the main thing to add is salmon oil, more in the winter for their joints. I never over feed in the off season always watching their condition, and bump up portions when they are working. Gus is naturally very lean, the amount of people that tell me I should be feeding him up is unbelievableâŠ..the same people thatâs dogs couldnât run the length of themselves never mind come close to what Big Red does (aye, Iâm easily riled when it comes to people questioning my boys condition!đ). Sonny is petite but developing a nice strong chest and shouldersâŠ.too early for Wee Enzo but he has a healthy appetite! Thanks for your support đ
Hi Colin thanks for that. I have used dr johns silver before. And skinners muesli. Thanks again. Jean
Is your black lab a working type lab?
Yes, Lab Retriever.
Another good one. Looking forward to seeing youre newcomer soon. All the best.
Enjoyed the video Think you're right, pushing a spaniels out to 250-300m is no mean feat What I might have tried was to also drop a dummy just shy of the brow. Sent him out to pick that, then immediately sent him out for one of the others hoping he'd draw confidence from the successful pick to push on further. But getting it out as far as you did is good even if he failed to pick He's a bonny dog, seemed to enjoy himself in the woods. Shoot over mine so they rarely go that far for a fallen bird, more likely a really long retrieve would be on a runner where they've taking a line. Horses for course and all that. Anyway always enjoy your videos long or short, also (nowt to do with the dogs) I enjoy the music you have on the video too. All the best, cheers.
Thanks Peter, the reason I persist (thus far anyway) with training him to âget outâ was an instance last season when the labs were out picking runners then a 3rd bloody runner dropped close to us and took off. Wee Sonny was the only tool in the box I had left, he seen it and I sent him, he took the line spot on but got so far out after and proceeded to slow up and circle round! Young dog in his first season and all that, confidence issueđ€·đŒ I should have tried what you said today ! A fair distance he did go out though like you say. He is a braw wee guy, I should maybe just embrace what he excels at. It was good seeing Big Red back on song, his heads been up his ar$e recently. Thanks for your support Peter.
Another good one mate enjoying all the content just now and theirs been plenty of it these past few weeks . Notrthlaws pre season kicking off big time now. Looking forward to seeing the young pup add to the dynamic. I know itâs dummy work mainly but the old fella is shoving the young lads heâs still more than capable.
Very impressive, great control.
Thanks Colin, really enjoyed that, good honest training..
Anothee good video mate and all the best with the health issues. Not sure whats the more impressive right enough, the steadyness of youre 3 or the steadyness of those deer đ
Incredible around the deer at the end! How do you train that / how do you build up the exposure to game for the younger dogs until they reach that level?
Repetition in a nutshell. They see deer quite often, not as close as that mind you. The black lab was the only one to ever chase when he was a youngster, he was made aware in no uncertain terms it wasnât acceptable and his never done it since. When the other dogs came along if we came across deer it was a case of timing from me to growl ânoâ at them if they looked like they were too interested. Itâs a case of putting the dog in the situation to put the correction into themâŠ.encouraging the dog to do wrong to make it do right! In the case of chasing the rabbit if Iâd seen the rabbit I would have growled at them before they chased, I was talking at the time so missed it. But like I say they or the spaniel in particular âdid wrongâ and the situation gave me a chance to see if he would stop on the whistle under severe temptation. Also bare in mind theyâd been scenting rabbits seconds before so the Springer was âwiredâ already. He is a real steady Spaniel, I was really pleased at his response to âthe stopâ. To get that kind of steadiness it is purely a case of exposing them to the temptations as often as possible. The black lab is prone to ârunning inâ on a shoot if heâs not kept in check, but he was used to being the only dog for a few years, there is a certain amount of jealousy, he thinks every bird should be his. Itâs all pretty interesting working a team of very differently wired dogs.
Hi Colin, luv your videos, keep it up and I hope you get over your health issues soon and back to full strength.
I will be looking forward to the new arrival,
Completely agree. Another thing that pisses me off is people who take Dogs like Labs etc to the groomers. Total fucking nonsense.
Absolutely agree!!
Very impressive.
I gt no.4 for you bet she will be untrainable
Great job.
Great video, Dogs look great.
Nice to see you back again, look forward to some more videos take care mate.
Cant get my Red Lab Willow to sit still when playing fetch - she spins in circles as i get ready to throw !
Very good training video, my dad used to field trial English setters.
How did you train him to stay. Mine has a problem staying.
Never gave him an inch from day one Wendy, sit/stay was started as soon as I got him home, manners training as much as anything đusing a pip of the whistle. Now at just gone a year old heâs great on the stop whistle, the same pip I used from day one. If I hold him for any more than a few seconds he knows to park his bum. Heâs been a treat so farâŠ.but still waiting for the wheels to come offâŠas everyone says will happen đ
no idea what the hell you're saying
Stop being ignorant then. Hes speaking perfect english
Gorgeous. đ

Lol..
Lovely pupp, and so obedient, just telling you he doesnât need a leash to walk nicely.
Brilliant.
Do you breed?
No, but, yeah I know I should!

Beautiful work and a beautiful pup! Wonderful to watch the synergy,
Heâs looking good. Will you be doing longer videos once you start the proper training? đ
Yeah I will đ

He is coming on well Colin.

Another good wee video Colin.the wee man coming on a treat, and the two big fellas are impeccably trained mate, their a credit to you. Iâm just curious, do you have any notion as to how the formation came about? Has Gus assumed the Alpha in the kennel, genuinely thought the big fella might have been in their, not saying heâs better or anything but just because heâs the older head of the three.
He is coming on Colin Happy New Year all.
Heâs doing well. đ
