...my screen printing studio...home to my clothing brand
Screen printing for my own clothing brand has been one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. It's also been one of the most challenging having had no previous experience in this area.
In this video I want to welcome you behind the scenes to my single car garage which I converted to a dedicated screen printing studio back in 2022.
It's where all the magic happens for my clothing brand, VÉLOKIND. Starting a clothing brand and doing all the screen printing of t-shirts, hoodies and sweatshirts has been a huge learning curve for me. There have been many times when I've felt like throwing in the towel but I've always pushed on.
The fulfilment I get from creating something out of nothing and being able to document the journey and share with others is motivation enough to be able to push on through the difficult times and keep growing.
I hope you enjoy this slightly different video for what is still a relatively new channel for me. Thanks a lot for watching. Let me know what you think or if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Chris

Should You START A Clothing Brand In 2023?
I am currently working a full-time job but I also want to start a clothing e-commerce business. I am a bit confused about where to start. Should I invest my time in building a brand first, or should I start with print-on-demand (POD) Dropshipping?
This is so best I've seen so far!❤
Cool. I'm pleased you like it 😁👍

Very good video. Thank you ❤
Thanks Katarina. I'm really pleased you enjoyed it 🙂👍
Would you say do discount sales in person/stall and upmarket prices on your website and mid-prices on third-party resell platforms for a set period or season 🤔
I've never sold in person, but imagine that's a good opportunity to promote/discount your product a little to encourage the sale without the whole world knowing you're doing it and therefore potentially devaluing the brand. I've used sales on my website for key seasonal events and when orders are low...just to stimulate a bit of activity.
@@TheApparelLife to simulate a bit of activity 🤔 do you mean for boosting seo traffic
No, I meant to generate some traffic to the website and sales...usually by highlighting the sale on Instagram and my email list.
If you ever do a custom order it would be good to show the process, costs and where to buy, etc
Hi mate. Yeah, its a good idea. I'll do a walk through of the process from receiving order to despatching.
@TheApparelLife I probably should have said a custom package order 🎁 or even a normal package order 📦 to show how you ordered it and had it made
I see. Yes, I've added it to my list of video ideas. Thanks a lot.
Amz linkz
Hey, Chris. What kind of paint do you use for this 🤔
It's a gold waterbased screenprinting ink called @permasetaqua
@TheApparelLife Thanks, do you mix it with anything else 🤔 to make it last or to change the look, etc
No, these are just straight from the pot although you can mix them to get close to pantone colours.
Hey Your videos are very useful, helpful and realistic. I was wondering whether you did a mentor program
Hey, Thanks very much for watching. Appreciate your kind words. Pleased they've been helpful. I don't currently but it’s something I have in mind once my brand is a bit more established. Kinda feel like I need to see more success for myself before I offer that kind of service. Would love to though.
@@TheApparelLife well I would be interested and many say it is good to teach as you grow so people can see the real life struggles, joys, solutions and progress that you make. I don’t really see many people from the uk doing what you do👏
Thanks mate. That's really interesting feedback. I'll definitely give it some thought and see how I could work something like this into what I'm doing. Cheers.
It is a good idea to invest in some ads for your videos So that people can get to know you more 😊😉💪🥇
Hey. Thanks for the idea. Never really considered ads for this channel. Cash is a bit tight right now but I'll give it some thought. Cheers.

Where’s the how to video?
Good point! When building my screen print studio I had no idea I would end up starting a CZcams channel. Wish I'd filmed the making of it. Same for my screen drying cabinet too!!
The ten touch points 🤔
With a bit of luck it won't take every customer 10 🤞
@TheApparelLife it would be interesting to know what these 10 touch points would be.
Yep, still f@£k all 🙄 Need more money management systems to make a profit. I mean, you need to make a real profit in business to pay the bills and lifestyle you want.
Might do a video on calculating and tracking and profitability👍
@TheApparelLife fundamentals 101, right!

@TheApparelLife Two things are promised: taxes and clearance. So you might as well prepare people in some of the stories, tips, and resources or preparations around them. Before the end of the year and after the end of the year before the start of another deadline. File work to pick up and hand in or sort out.

Wonderful video. I’m in the preliminary stages of starting my clothing brand here in the states.
Hi David. Great to hear you're watching from the other side of the world! Thanks a lot. I'm really pleased you enjoyed the video. Good luck with getting your clothing brand started 👍👍
This is a bike song how that i think about it. It needs an remake. Ride long the pavement edge. 😂
Ha! I know exactly what you mean. It features one of my favourite films, Scarface. 'Push it to the Limit' is the name of the tune.
The first one was interesting 🤔 the last one is the one i should do, but then again the second one looks like it better for saving space.
Yeah, I'd say 1 and 2 are good for personal use. 3 is better for shipping to customers, particularly if there's a nice chest design.
Quality advice, tips and tutorials are more important than quality footage. What you've got displayed on this video is enough, just need to drop the gems you've learnt. A camera mounted to look over your shoulder so we can see behind the scenes would be interesting. Of course you'll need to film stuff that allows you to show what you're doing. For example you might open up a test session on opening up a print on demand account for practice that others haven't seen, etc. Just an idea.
Hi mate. This is really useful feedback. Thanks a lot. Sometimes I just don't have the time to put out the level of video quality I would like, so sometimes I've just had to shoot raw in order to get something out.
🙁....😃💻🏷📦🚚🚢🚚📭🎁👕🤗🚵♂️ Would be great if you did more videos around the workstation setup, organisation, accessories to buy (= affiliate opportunities) and how to run and fulfil orders from workstation. Its the Tips around the Running and Fulfil part that would be great for Physical online business video.
More great ideas! I think I'll do a video following the process from order receipt to fulfilment
@@TheApparelLife that would be great... I recommend that you do a few of them, because that topic can be explained in so many ways and different people at different stages will understand the way you explain it differently. But after a few videos something will click. I guess that's why people binge-watch videos the same type of video to hear it from different angles until it clicks.
Liking the videos, Chris. Would be great if you make a video showing the backend of the shipping, thermal label printer process with shopify and shipping provider's. Especially for home and away orders. Those are the best videos when dont a few times to show different aspects of how its done, and the pros and cons, or tips and must knows.
Another awesome idea💡 Thanks for watching and for your feedback. It's really helpful 🙂👍
@@TheApparelLife it's only a matter of time you'll be testing different methods and all your subscribers will get to see the what works. Shopify apps are free to try out. So to give a over the shoulder view would be interesting. Especially if you decide to keep the app. Talk about apps. What do you think about adding POD along side your physical products 🤔 I know you're not into POD but would this not be a smart move to add a mixture or would it be to much problems 🤔
Hi i am working in t-shirt from asian. If u r looking for cheap option may be we can get on a one point.
Where did you get your shelving from 🤔
Hi. I got it from IKEA. It's called Kallax. Its been a really good unit. Cheers for watching 👍
@TheApparelLife Thanks, Chris. I've left some comments on some of your videos. Hopefully, It will give you some ideas 💡
Love it🎉
Thanks Joanne! Pleased you enjoyed it 🙂

You're welcome Sarah
Hi Chris, awesome content and it's a big help with your videos on how to start and run a clothing brand :-) what T-Shirt brand do you use? Once again thank you for the tips :-)
Hi Chris. Thanks very much for watching. Nice to know there's someone out there finding the videos helpful! When I started out I bought samples from several manufacturers before settling on Stanley Stella. In the UK I buy my blanks through through a wholesaler called Ralawise 👍
@@TheApparelLife Hi Chris, thank you and keep up the content, they are brilliant :-) I have been looking at Next Level but then came to the conclusion Bella Canvas 3001, but will have to have a look at Stanley Stella and I'm in the UK also 🙂
Hi Chris. Sorry, only just seen your message here. I got a sample of the Bella Canvas 3001 (albeit a couple of years ago now). I found the fit was fealty nice but it didn't wear as well and the Stanley Stella I ended up going with. Shrank in the wash quite quickly but that was only a sample of 1. All my neck labels recommend washing at 30 for longevity...and the environment.
@@TheApparelLife No worries and thank you, I have ordered some Stella to have a look :-) once again thank you and keep up the videos :-)
Cool. I'd be interested to know what you think. Been a while since I looked beyond Stella for organic.
Good straight to the point vide.

That's awesome. Thanks a lot for your feedback and for following along. Means a lot 👍
Could a full tracksuit fit in a box like that, like top and bottoms
Yeah, I think you could. This is the largest box I use. All 4 boxes I use are more or less the same footprint, but this one is 150mm deep. Normally, I use the 100mm deep box for hoodies but this was a multiple item order. If I can get a hoodie in the 100mm box then a tracksuit should be fine. I would always recommend buying a few sample boxes to test. Most UK sites allow you to order individual boxes as samples before ordering a pack of 30 or 50 for example. Got your Insta message. I'll send you something tomorrow evening. Sorry, been super busy
Proppa stuff👍🏾
Cheers 🙂👍
Also how do link the person to the review? Like how do you know whos who. By the way its a quality video mate i love it honestly its like you read my mind i was tell someone about the envelopes you get with high end brands. Your packaging is crème de la crème!🔥💯👍🏾
Thanks a lot! Really appreciate that. The card in the package is printed with a QR code. The customer scans it and it takes them to Trustpikot to complete a review. When completing the review they normally leave a name soni can track it against my Shopify orders and then send them an email thanking them for the review and offering them 15% of a future order by giving them a 'THANKYOU15' discount code. Alternatively, if they don't scan the card, then My Shopify backend has the Trustpilot app link. The app automatically emails all customers about 7 days after placing the order inviting them to leave a review. I went with Trustpilot more because of my own experience as a consumer. Its just the review app I kinda recognise myself. Only downside is the reviews don't sit directly on my website against specific products. Still early days for me building up reviews but with time you can start to use them in socials and link to Trustpilot fron your website.
Where do you get the boxes from please and do you find the price expensive
Hi there. I use 4 different boxes which are all from UK suppliers. 3 from Rajapack and 1 which was a custom size from Packaging Supplies Limited. There's no doubt they are more expensive than polybags, for example, but in my view they are good value for the lasting impression they have with customers. My packing is entirely plastic free which aligns to my brand's values. They cost about £1 to £1.50 each depending upon the size and volume you buy. I also print mine myself. Maybe check out my slightly older video on the channel about how I package my orders. In the comments I recently listed all the box dimensions. Cheers, Chris
@@TheApparelLife I appreciate it thanks
@@VirgoFx. You're welcome 👍
Wow, that looks pretty amazing! I'm really impressed with the value you provide. My brand will be launching in a few months, I initially had in mind to use a polybag with a logo but this looks so much better, thanks for the insight. Could I perhaps have the dimensions you use for all the boxes? Thanks in advance & you have a new follower.
Hi there. Thanks very much for watching. Exciting to hear you're close to launching! I use 4 different boxes and their internal dimensions (mm, width, depth, height) are: 1) 290 x 215 x 32 (1 to 2 tees) 2) 295 x 213 x 70 (single sweatshirts or multiple tees) 3) 310 x 245 x 97 (hoodles or combinations) 4) 317 x 225 x 150 (larger orders) I'm really glad you found the video helpful. Good luck with your launch. Stick at it 💪Chris
@@TheApparelLife Hello Chris, Thank you for your response and your motivation, I really appreciate it. I start with 4 t-shirts in three colors, 75 pieces each, for a total of 900 pieces. In retrospect, a bit too ambitious. Anyway, I came to the market to give, perhaps I will give away the remaining t-shirt from the winter collection. Thanks again, Arwin.
My pleasure. Nice to hear about your plans. Let me know about your website when you launch. I'd love to have a look. Exciting times ahead 🙂👍
@@TheApparelLife Thank you for your message, unfortunately I have canceled the summer collection. It would come on the market too late due to many changes, it is a disappointment now that the full focus is on the winter collection.
