Why I replace TECHM’s on my 6L80 rebuilds
zhlédnutí 323Před 8 měsíci
This is why I like to replace the TECHM assembly during a 6L80 rebuild for one of my customers. A lot of the times the TECHM can be reused but it is just one more thing that can fail within the transmission. #chevrolet #6l80 #6l80 #automatictransmission #gmc #transmission #mechanic #mechanicalengineering #automotive
6L90 no movement in forward or reverse
zhlédnutí 3,3KPřed 8 měsíci
This is a disassembly or a tear down of a 6L90 automatic transmission for a no movement condition in forward as well as reverse range. While no movement can come from a check ball it is highly unlikely that two check balls will stick in the separator plate simultaneously. I have seen this failure before but it has only been on 4x4 2500HD work truck pick ups. #AutomaticTransmission #Chevrolet #6...
GM 10L80 automatic transmission idler gear failure and pump whine
zhlédnutí 8KPřed rokem
The new 10 speed transmissions in Ford and GM vehicles are known for a distinct whining noise. This is due to a defect within the automatic transmission case front cover idler gear and bearing assembly. The gear and bearing begin to walk which causes the gears to have excessive lash and result in a noise. Do not continue to drive the vehicle if it is exhibiting these symptoms. Tik tok: Esoteric...
There’s nothing like the sound of a diesel truck!! Just such perfection😌pure freedom❤️❤️
This is fantastic. Thank you for sharing!
What's with these external transmission pumps and belt driven engine oil pumps? Who comes with these stupid ideas?
Nothing like school vehicle, built solid, not like the junks we see today.
😳
Why does it happen? Please explain if you don’t mine. Thanks!
@@HewigIsidore The TCM tuning commands the converter clutch to slip excessively for smoother shifts. It is thin and it wears down this lining quickly
@@esoterictransmissions I agree 100%. The other issues in addition to what you mentioned about the smoother shift is valid for sure. Also, I would include that the GM 6L80 transmission runs too hot for starters. The transmission thermostat bypass opens up about 194F degrees. Too damn HOT. The AFM System is what’s destroying these Torque Converters in my humble opinion respectfully. When the engine transitions back and forth from 8 to 4 & 4 to 8 cylinders, it significantly increases the TCC Desired Slip Rpm. I suspect GM engineers doing this to reduce vibration through the drivetrain for driver comfort at the expense of the Torque Converter itself. If the programming does not increase the TCC Desired Slip RPM during AFM, the customer would experience noticeable vibration every time the AFM engages. This act drastically wears out the Clutch lining inside the Torque Converter apply piston. The key to solving this issue if your transmission is not to far gone believe it or NOT is upgrading valve body, pump and turning off AFM. The transmission valve body and pump control the ENTIRE function of the transmission, to include the Torque Converter. There are 3 shift kits on the market that will absolutely eradicate this issue, if the transmission is still in good shape and not too far gone. These companies are SONNAX & TRANS GO I have personally myself installed and 😂combined 2 kits with a SONNAX TCC Kit and Shift Kit at 30,000 miles. I have 85,000 right now. Solved all my issues. Always remember that the Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid, TCC Pressure Regulator Valve and Pressure Regulator Spring is what controls the Torque Converter mechanically and electronically thru PCM to TCM commands thru CAN BUS…. communications. It’s essentially a torque based model based upon engine torque. That determines shift strategy, shift pressures, shift timing and transmission’s ability to request a torque reduction via reduced fueling, throttle control or ignition timing in order to make the shift.
@@HewigIsidore You’re the man. You need to sell courses on this!
@@esoterictransmissions Thank you! I think it sucks that GM has done this to the paying customers.
Can I swap this transmission into my 15 l83 ? My 22 Silverado has the 10 speed I think it’s a big improvement so far with only 50k miles. The 6 speed in the 15 still holding up with 210k miles but has always been a little clumsy whenever you give throttle input. The 10 speed goes to the perfect gear every time.
Junk
Wow
So...avoid the 6 L 80 all together ?
...or just avoid the 10 L 80 all together.

Recently i got training for this but still didn’t get chance to work on it😊
could you do a video on how to measure clutch clearance on this transmission ?
Finally a good video doing a tear down and explaining everything, thanks !
can you change it without removing it?
I just got a 2015 Yukon 6.2 8L90 with 122K, seems like it was taken care of. It has a delay 1-2 shift mostly first shift of the day. I just did a fluid change 12 quarts mobile 1 blue label, drained through the cooler lines running 10 seconds at a time. The pan looked pretty good, but the fluid was pretty dark. I have not really noticed much shudder except maybe at really low RPMs. I also just installed the superior solutions thermostat valve upgrade. I want to take it on some back country trips and maybe Canada, but now a little worried about reliability. I was surprised and happy to hear you did not think there were a lot of 8L90 converter failures. The temp sensor seems to be working fine. Should I just worry less and drive or should I do anything else to it? Great vid BTW, subscribed.
@@jayeritsland9780 Congrats and good job on servicing it man! If I were you I would drive it till there is absolutely a problem. I think you should be safe to keep driving it. However, You’re at the mileage where you will likely have some issue arise. Whether that’s valve body, internal temp sensor, or chain etc so I would budget $5-6k for transmission to be on safe side.
Thank you.
I too am a GM tech. The 6L80 in my 13 sierra is still going strong at 109k Miles knock on wood 😂
I got a 2013 1500 denali at 208,000 miles. Still a beast both motor and trans. Its got the original factory tranny fluid jn it still🤣
Sound advice.

Must be a warranty job. See how long you last working like that.😊
My 92 wrangler still smooth as silk
New trans are junk junk junk Ford junk Chev junk Manual only son unless it military grade 😅😅😅
Junk!
Not sure if you can answer this, but my 18 needs a new 10l80 when looking online it states I can only use a 10l80 from an 18.
Now add footage of all the prep time to install all of those parts
@@jeffreymelcher3740 That’s what the cavemen in the comments don’t understand haha. Assembly of a trans you’ve done 1000 times is the easy part
Where can i get that stand?

Or you could use the hole in the table like we've done ,for the last 50 years.
@@ronniecox109 You have to spin the turbine shaft to make the last section drop down and in my opinion that’s harder to do reaching under the bench.
@@esoterictransmissions which you dcan do by reaching under your building table. At least you don't have the monster snap ring like the 6L80E
It a GM. Nuff said.
I have a 2017 Silverado with the 6 speed, bought it used at 45,000 miles. I did my research before hand and installed the lower temp thermal bypass and full fluid change, will this extend the lifw of my torque converter? My average running temp is 145. I had seen one of your CZcams shorts. Thanks!
@@paulcondie2520 To be totally honest man every single 6L80 equipped truck or SUV from 2014-2019 with the original torque converter will have a failure anywhere from 45-145,000 miles. It’s not IF it’s when but if you catch it in time or replace the converter when it begins to shudder you can save the transmission. To answer your question, yes. The cooler it can run the better. GM actually requires you to replace the thermal valve with an updated part anytime you rebuild a 6L80/90 under warranty. However, most 6L80 equipped 1500 pickups and SUVs are out of warranty by now. I rebuilt a 2019 Tahoe that was barely under certified powertrain months ago. Just budget for it and keep the truck!
Will a lower temp thermal bypass and 30,000 me fluid changes help ?
Is that the oil pan ???????????????
Dose this work generally speaking for any automatic transmission?
Yep expensive GARBAGE!
More new car junk.Thats why I like my older vehicle a simple computer and wiring system can fix and repair almost indefinitely!!!
Hey bro your CZcams channel I have a 2019 GMC Sierra how can I fix the problem it's been in the shop three times for the same problem I can drive the truck for a long time and say I make a stop at the store get back in the truck start it up put it in drive and once I get the speed up to 7 mph the transmissions locks up then I had to set for 2 or 3 hours then it would drive just fine
For GM, the 10 spd Automatic Transmissions are a failure within a failure.
That'll be $2,999
I thought his shirt said chevy sucks at first, lol. Just more gears to tear up like everything else on these new vehicles. We can’t seem to build a good transmission in 2024. I run a power glide in my little mustang, about 1500hp, and that thing was designed in the 50-60s. The quote is true, the don’t build them like they used to. They built to tear up
That is quite a piece of hardware right there. I know a lot about automobiles, but transmissions still baffle me.
No, the REAL issue here is shoddy design. KNOWN SHODDY DESIGN. Stop buying new, seek older, pre 2000s if possible. Maybe if we stop handing our money over, they may catch a clue....
Isn't it normal to change fluid at 50 thousand miles.Thats the biggest issue lack of maintenance.
Yea 10 Speed ,need that
Change the transmission fluid ,that's just a scam 😂😂😂
Anything more than 6 speed is just trouble waiting to happen especially if its an Allison
Aisin 8 and 9 speed transmissions are awesome
