    So how long was this hike? I look online and it says only 1/4 mile but it seemed longer watching your video.... to find it do we just type in Jemez falls trailhead? Is that were you began? Ok thanks for any info!

    • @EpicModeEngaged
      @EpicModeEngaged Před 8 dny

      Yes, great questions! You are correct. If you walk from the Jemez Falls Campground area, the walk is about 10- 15 mins. I wanted to put in a lot more miles that day & wanted to explore more, so I started from the Battleship Rock Picnic Ground. It ended up being 7- 8 miles roundtrip. You can find different trail maps on the Alltrails app. If you enter "Jemez Falls" it will bring up all the different trails offered in that area... some longer and some shorter. It all depends on the kind of adventure you want to go on. Hope that helps 👍

    • @EpicModeEngaged
      @EpicModeEngaged Před měsícem

      I did. Mostly for the reason that there isn't a "perfect backpack" where everything is a 10. The Pros outweigh the Cons for this, in my opinion. Also, there is a good possibility Osprey have made the newer version of this pack more comfortable. I don't have another pack that is 20L, however, I use my Zulu 30 tons more and it's very comfortable. Not sure if that helps

    How casual is 10-3? I’ve been considering doing the Sandia Crest Trail and stopping there for lunch or dinner, but I’m curious how much I’d stick out as a sweaty backpacker

    • @EpicModeEngaged
      @EpicModeEngaged Před 2 měsíci

      Oooh, great question! It's casual, we saw people in there with shorts and sandals. Having said that, however, the restaurant manager kinda gave us the stink eye. She also didn't like that we placed our trekking poles up against the window near our table. She asked that we "collapse them and put them in our packs." Probably because they didn't look "proper". Not sure if she was having a bad day or if she didn't like hikers in general. You could probably get away with eating there for lunch, probably not for dinner though. It's a little more formal and you need a reservation

    Behind the lumbar pad is a removable insert that pushes the pad in and out. Since that's the area that's uncomfortable for you, removing it might change your experience entirely. Or maybe you don't even have that insert and need one. People have remarked that it was missing on their packs. As far as the weight goes, the pack is a hauler and the weight is all in the components present for that purpose, mainly the heavy duty frame and suspension. If all you're carrying is ~25lbs for a weekend hike, the Baltoro isn't the pack to do it with, but as a heavily laden winter or expedition pack it's only rivalled by an external frame design. That said, I guess it can be a finicky pack. I had this exact one, same size, model and (ugly) color, and the fit and comfort was perfect, but I ended up swapping it for a 75. While the 75 is fine, it doesn't "stick" like the 65 did, but feels slightly looser on my back.

  • @JeroenCoelen
    @JeroenCoelen Před 2 měsíci

    Water bladder taken up space also is something I noticed with the 40L. Not sure how other backpacks of this size deal with it?

    • @EpicModeEngaged
      @EpicModeEngaged Před 2 měsíci

      Wow, that's interesting about the 40L. Yeah, it's a weird quirk and design flaw. It's one of the reasons why I moved up to a 30L from a 20L- was for the space. There is a Gregory water bladder (3D Hydro Trek Hydration Reservoir) that has the dimensions of (12.4 x 9.44 x 3.15 inches) and I wonder if this would provide more room in a pack since it's design is wider? It would be interesting to try out.

    Ok you hike where and when it may not get to cold..? But hiking in the shoulder season, in Alaska or somewhere similar. Part of the trip is exposed tundra (Durston won't do) 7-14 days without resuplying, fishing gear and the whole business. That can easy become 25kg (55pounds) plus. Are there any ultralight alternatives? I've seen Hypelight Mountain Gear 70 Litre claiming to handle 27kg. That seem just...unlikely? Can it possibly be more comfortable to carry 25 kg plus backpack with the Hyperligh then Baltoro?

    • @EpicModeEngaged
      @EpicModeEngaged Před 3 měsíci

      Nah, I've hiked (snowshoed) in cold climates as well. Take a look on my Hiking Amazing Trails playlist in the past year and you'll see what I mean. I don't mind the cold, obviously since I am a skier as well, haha. Yeah, I've heard a lot about HMG as well. Reviews are a mixed bag tho- some say they're super light and wonderful, while others say they're uncomfortable and flimsy. Not sure if they would be more "comfortable" than the Baltoro. Comfort is very subjective... what may be comfortable to someone may be terrible for others. I've also heard great things about Granite Gear and Mystery Ranch, so perhaps those would be worth looking into as well

  • @kead6636
    @kead6636 Před 3 měsíci

    Maybe I missed it, what are your thoughts on the waist strap? Or rather what do you do with them? I appreciate it when the load is heavy, but when just walking around the city and not wearing the waist strap it digs in on my back.

    • @EpicModeEngaged
      @EpicModeEngaged Před 3 měsíci

      Good question! The waist strap is alright when I would use it. When I pack bigger loads it helps but not as much as a beefier waist strap offered on bigger backpack models. I think that is one of the reasons I got a 30 liter pack eventually because it distributes the weight better for heavier loads

  • @filmic1
    @filmic1 Před 3 měsíci

  • @meandmerat8744
    @meandmerat8744 Před 3 měsíci

    Lol, the whole point of the Baltoro is the ability to haul heavy loads in great comfort. There are many reasons why your low back was uncomfortable. The way you packed, your own biomechanics, the pack wasn't set up properly, or it's the wrong size.

    • @EpicModeEngaged
      @EpicModeEngaged Před 3 měsíci

      Haha, well comfort is subjective for everyone. What works for some, may not work for others. Those things can certainly contribute and I believe most of those checkboxes were checked. I even went to great lengths on the last trip to make sure I packed lighter and still had to take off the pack & re-adjust multiple times. Very annoying. I also noticed that most serious backpackers don't use the Baltoro due to it's weight. Thru-hikers definitely don't use it. To carry heavy loads doesn't mean the pack also has be heavy- not to me anyway. Unfortunately, I discovered this after I bought the pack
