Economic Update: The Political Economy Of Tariffs
[EU S14 E23] The Political Economy Of Tariffs
In this week’s Economic Update, Professor Richard Wolff devotes the entire program to an analysis of tariffs. We discuss why tariffs are not a worker's issue, why capitalism's continuous swings between free trade and protectionist periods and phases make little impact on workers, and why competing capitalists seek to get workers to support their positions on tariffs.

    I'm pretty sure everyone knows what a tariff is. The reason they put tariffs on in my view is because the decades long campaign to buy local, buy American made products doesn't work and never has. People don't care, they want it cheap and you can't compete with child and slave labor. Your better off restricting products and force people pay more for those products.

    Children are only expensive because we are locked into a society that demands we spend alot of money on them. You dont want your kids to feel poor. But where I live is quite a hippy country town where people dont really care that much about consumerism. Children do become expensive though when they are teenagers because they start to eat alot more, especially boys. The best parts of mine and my kids childhoods where doing stuff like raising ducklings, picking our own food from the garden, having mud fights in the dam, building stuff. But 99% of people now are locked up in cities where they are deprived of the joy of nature, so they must be entertained with expensive environment and brain destroying crap. People are literally slaves now. It is hard to get out of that system, and it takes alot of guts to break free. I think another modern problem parents face is lack of close knit extended families, and specifically, lack of grandparenting. Grandparents either live too far away or they think that once their kids are adults that their job is done. Thats not how we evolved to be. You had to be useful to your family and tribe till you couldnt any longer. Now older people just want to do their own thing. My mum helped me out with my kids, and so did my mother in law. When my mum got frail and developed cancer, I took care of her in my home and she died in my home. I know you think I must have been in a privelaged position to do this. Yes, I live on a farm. Its hard work but we all helped each other. Now people are trapped in little boxes, entirely dependant on the system for their most basic needs. Its so sad. Humans have become caged animals. Everyone should have the right to land to grow food and the right to build their own shelter. We dont need much to be happy really. The basics have been stripped away and we are being fed distractions which arent making us happy.

    I'm a woman in my mid 30s. I am childless by choice (I had 1 abortion several years ago and then had my fallopian tubes removed several years after that). There is no circumstance in which I would carry a fetus to term. I don't think I could mentally handle a child, and especially not a disabled child (I am simply being honest here. It takes a special kind of person to raise a disabled child with the love and respect and care they deserve and I am not that person). I am absolutely certain I made the right choice by not having children. I do like children, and I'm happy to interact with them, but I could not be responsible for one for 24 hours a day, for years, even decades.

    We agree with this but its inevitable that there could be chances of civil war to wash out its own system, Purpose of employment in India is not for the betterment of workforce, not for citizens quality of life, not for developing country, It's only to increase wealth of the top 1% Indians. The bottom 99% Indians work to feed the top 1% Indian luxuries. If it was for citizens wellbeing there wouldn't have been crazy levels of inequality in terms of wealth also most importantly the areas where they live(as both pay same property tax but one gets poor infra other get good infra access.) Indians were abused then by colonies now by capitalists. Properties in Indian suburbs cost almost the same as properties in Britain suburb, only difference is that the Indian suburbs are crappy in terms of development and quality, connectivity(sometimes no road even to enter properties) but British suburbs are at least 100 times ahead in development and quality, connectivity

  • @kbrilhart
    @kbrilhart Před 11 hodinami

    Dr. Wolff explains tariffs well, but the issue cannot be seen in isolation. In his example, an American car company could compete with the $30,000 Chinese electric car, IF they invest sufficiently in ways to increase the productivity of their workers, IF they improve their designs for efficiency, IF they find ways to make the car with lower cost materials, etc. Often, they can't do some or any of these things because of prior government policies (which are not quickly changed). There's also the unmentioned fact that it is Chinese policy to require foreign manufacturers setting up shop there to "share" their technology with Chinese government agencies. There are more aspects to this, but Wolff makes one big mistake. Go to his website and you'll see as you look around that it is a Marxist website. Some would say 'so what'. Marxism has never been efficient in practice. In Marxist countries, workers are typically poor and repressed by secret police. That is a necessary factor in the survival of a Marxist system.

    Ideologies like Marxism, fascism, white supremacy and so on all create simple minded explanations for the problems we face as humans. All of these ideologies have one thing in common. They all identify a class or ethnicity of people to blame for the problems they perceive, whether those problems are real or imagined. Unfortunately there are still a lot of people who fall for this kind of simplistic thinking.

    • @ryanosterman2651
      @ryanosterman2651 Před 15 hodinami

    • @dshw

      Comparing Marxism to these is a huge disservice. The amount of scientific work that is underpinning it and has continued to criticize and develop it is far beyond whatever "theory" white supremacy, fascism "and so on" can deliver as a whole. Marxism is a philosophical and (socio)economical theory, while your other two examples are actually ideologies. If you want to compare Marxism to anything, compare it to neoliberalism or capitalism or anything else that is actually in the same categories.

    Some may be questioning if globalization is good or bad for the US. Take a look at Apple - the largest and most successful company on earth. If you're holding an iPhone or iPad or any other Apple products, look at the back, it says "Designed by Apple in California Assembled in China". So how does Apple dominate the world? By doing manufacturing in China. Steve Jobs understood well if he produced in the US, the prices would had been too expensive to compete globally. In my country, for example, "Made in USA" products (except software) have no market at all, they're just too expensive compared to other alternatives with equivalent specifications. GM and Ford had tried hard to stay but eventually pulled out too several years ago. So I guess this recently "Made in USA" fuss is more of a domestic matter - it has no effect in the global markets.

    Mr. Wolfe, do you believe the tariffs were possibly imposed to slow the transition to EV's because it would severely reduce the amount of fuel sold in America, which would cause a decline in the worth of our dollar since it's backed by petrol? Especially since now Saudi Arabia did not renew the deal to trade oil only for American dollars.

    So, instead of saving the world from climate change by switching over to EV's faster, we're going to strangle out the industry and drag our feet on getting off oil. Maybe we shouldn't have backed our dollar by petroleum.
