Why 18 frames per second?
Because I shoot at 18 frames per second.
Because I shoot at 18 frames per second.
Why not the traditional 24?
@@zomalfa4363 because this film is 8mm, not 16mm or larger format. With only some 4,000 frames on the roll, shooting faster merely wastes available time.
More frames won't improve it you're saying? And what you got set up there is probably better then the wolverine scanner, I think the wolverine is 3mp.
I o to właśnie chodzi!
Thank you for the comment, it's nice to hear these videos are of assistance to people.
I want to move the bed higher but cant loosen the screws anymore? what have I done wrong?
Not sure, but I'd move the bed down by hand, loosen the screws to half length, then use the auto home functionality. Be quick on the power switch in case the table tries to impale itself on the hot end.
@@HeikkiHietala I did the auto home functionality and recalibrated the whole bed and it still seems like one of my screws are on the loosest end. Its still worked better better now thought. Im trying a big flat print now to see if the corners are aligned, Thanks for the tip! and greeting s from sweden!
I love this!
Glad to hear!

Sorry, I didn't express myself well, I would like to know what program you used to assemble the mpeg. thanks
Ah, I use Blender 3D which is free and has a very good video sequence editor.
genial.qualo programa que voce está usando? obrigado
It's an Arduino program written in Arduino's C language.
Thanks for the info as I am new to printing and waiting for my ender 7 i hope you will share more info. Its difficult to find people sharing there Ender 7 tips and tricks. What are your thoughts and setting's for the ender 7. Greetings from Holland, Frits
Hello, thanks for liking the video. We run the Ender 7 with a max speed of 180 mm/s, but I recommend 150 or less. The table seems to have good adhesion even when cold, so if necessary, add 40 to 60 degrees of table heat. With PLA, use 205 to 220 degrees of heat. As for layer height, it depends on the piece you are printing, but 0.1 to 0.3 mm are fine. For infill I use 10 % rectilinear if the piece has no loads to carry, but if yes, then up to 40 with tilted cubic infill for extra strength. Top and bottom 4 to 6 layers, wall thickness 3 to 6. Hope this helps.
@@HeikkiHietala thanks 4 answer i will dail in those numbers. 👍
Very nicely done. It is nonetheless tempting to buy a Kodak Scanza, for example, for in the order of $160. You feed the 8mm film into a slot in the Scanza, and hey presto....digital copy. That being said, the engineering on display here is impressive.
Thanks for the comment. I did indeed build V1. 0 to teach myself Arduino, and now with 4.0 I get 3800 x 2900 pixels out of the frames. It's about on par with commercial scanners.
DSLRs dont like this sort of work load. Expect the shutter to have a rather short life.
These 1000Ds are a dime a dozen today, and I scan one film per year (4200 frames). This one has shot 11K so far so it'll last a few years.
Ingenious and well thought out, excellent video please make more videos.
Thank you! Please see my channel for more.

nice
Thank you! Of course, a limited use, but a useful device in teaching IoT.
sweet, a nice arduino project pcb...:)
so the bridge worked for the inner circle part, but the gear is still printing hollow inside with cura, is there a setting to tell the slicer (or blender) to fill in those gaps?
Try to use an online stl check: www.formware.co/onlinestlrepair
can i get access to your code for this project

Hello! Nice work! I´ve seen some vids from other users and i try to build my own scanner. I am collecting ideas to set it up and participiate by the lessons learned from you an others. I have some ideas: The collecting reel / spool should be connectet with magnet transmission to avoid to much torque on the film. The light-scource is an high power led from a cheap 15Euro Headlamp. To adjust the color-temperature i will use software like photoshop or gimp. There you have the tools "Cropping" "Rotating" "Whitebalance" and you are able to adjust the exposure via "gradation curve" in small limits. Batch-work in a Folder is also avaliable. The transver from jpeg to mpeg is then via blender - like you do. Or do you know another open-scource way? Greetings from Germany, sorry for my bad english
Hello! Thanks for your comment. I have a potentiometer to adjust the takeup spool speed. I use Blender's video editor for all the post processing, and it has all the features you mention. I don't do color correction, because I have the lamp rated at 3600 K and the camera set at 3600 K.
excellent work. I like the idea of the transport/ claw mechanism being away from the gate. What a great idea.
Thank you for the comment! It does work rather well.
Genius. 👍
Thank you! Please check my videos for the latest version, Kotokino Mark IV.
I made mine using an old Standard/Super 8mm projector by removing the bulb, transformer and electrics and installing stepper motor, Arduino, LED light source and camera trigger using magnets on the shutter via reed switch, as it makes more sense to modify something that already has the film transport mechanism in-place i.e most of the work is already done and has a ready built housing for easy storage. Having said that, building from the ground up is a serious challenge and for that I have to congratulate you on a fantastic job well done :-) Perhaps I might do a video of my build and post that onto You Tube...maybe??
Thanks for the kind words! Have you seen the latest, Kotokino Mark IV? And please share your work too!
i can't find the Add Gear panel at all :( i am sorry but i am really dumb
It's an addon. Go to Edit / Preferences, and find Extra Objects, or Gear Factory, cannot check which it is just now.
Great idea! Thanks for sharing!
Glad to hear you liked it! Read my blog for the details.
You have given me great ideas for my scanner design. If you see my channel you will see I do time lapse videos with a modified camera. Eg tulip 21 day time lapse. This is slow way to scan film but much better quality, after all some of my plant videos were one frame every 15 mins. Time is not an issue when scanning valuable family film.
Like the fact the film remains in the same direction during the scan. Other scanners reverse the film bend over the sprockets which could damage an old film. Well done!
Yes, this was the first design for the film transport and it has worked well, just some minor details have been redesigned.
Well done! That is exactly the project I am working on now. I plan to use an old projector for film transport driven by stepper motors. Having the separate frames gives more control over editing. Like to exchange emails so we can keep in contact? Jim
Hi! Thanks for the comments. Please see my blog at www.sabulo.com/category/8mm-film for all the details. You can contact me there if you need my help.
Nice contraption, great idea.
Thanks very much for your comment!
Very impressive.
Amazing. Any result footage from the film? Btw why halogen lamp and not the LED one?
Thanks! I went to halogen for the color temperature which matches the setting of the camera. I will post some demos when I have scanned the 2020 film properly (I redid the film transport mechanism just now).
genial
Thanks very much!
бестолковый ролик, не описано самое главное как перемещается пленка, как сделать грейферный механизм
If you check the other videos, you'll see how the film moves. And read my blog entries on this too. A rather rude start for a conversation there. If you don't like the video, move on to something else.
un desastre
I wonder what makes you think so, but you are free to feel that way.
there is the possibility to transfer the negative and then change to positive on the computer
I shoot color or b/w reversal film, because I have a projector too. Color negative is nice but useless in that sense.
I love your approach to problem-solving. Great job! I was wondering, could you trigger the camera to take a 3 or 5 frame bracket exposure? That way you could approach an HDR workflow and you might get better images. Also, have you updated this project? It would be great to see it if so. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the kind words! I have a new version out with a Canon 1000D. You can read all about it on my blog at www.sabulo.com/sb/category/8mm-film/ and there is a nee video on it too here on CZcams. I am grabbing at 2200 px x 1800 px, then cropping to 820 px x 600 px. I think that retains the essence of 8mm film well. The camera is triggered by the film gate, so grabbing multiple frames could be difficult.
Instablaster
Thank you Kees, I tried to make it easy to follow, good to see it works!
Which type of light filter did you use between the projector and the camera?
It's a piece of 80g/m2 copy paper.
Hi, on form 3 is it possible to use the open mode( being able to use other brands of resins) as with form 2?
I don't know. I only have one pool and one can of resin currently.
Happened to me today and blew 6 servos, no smoke just movement fail, didn't realise what was happening until after the third pair smoked.
I feel your pain.
Thanks!
Very nice. I wonder, how many exposures have you made in all, and do you expect the camera to hit a limit on the number of exposures? I ask because my rig (a total hack by comparison, hit a limit and the camera failed. czcams.com/video/Nzb32rtTIv0/video.html I'm thinking of retooling with a Raspberry Pi and the Camera 2 module.
I've dabbled in this area quite a bit over (on and off) over the last decade and tried quite a few things. I appreciate some of the challenges involved and really admire seeing how others respond to these challenges. In this case it looks like you may be using an intermittent film mechansm, maybe one taken from an old projector? If this is the case, that seems like a great solution to get really good registration/stability of the frames. I've tried a few other things and there is always a lot of wobble requiring stabilization of the frames in post.
Thanks Chris. It is indeed a film gate from a broken Bolex D8 that I bought on eBay for 8 euros. All of this project is on my blog, see www.sabulo.com.
Nice project. I made a 3D engine with my ARDUINO and provided all the the links on my video
Excellent, Do you have a printable file for 3.0 like you do 1.0? Any new examples of what you've scanned? thanks
Thanks Mark. I am putting together the final file set of V3 printables when school starts and I return to the University. I haven't made new scans but have shot one roll of b/w which I will demo when developed and scanned.

Hi I'm looking to create double gear not single but I don't know how to do it please can you help me
Hi! I am not sure I understand your request. Please clarify.
Yes I know but I don't know how to explain but if you can give me your email then I can send you a picture then you can see what gear I'm looking for,And how much? Thank you for reply
@@sportsnewschanne4938See www.sabulo.com for that. I won't be able to design gears for you due to current workload.
I'm curious as to why you used halogen rather than an RGB led with adjustable gains (for color correction)?
It was available at the right color temperature, and the result is good.
soo nice ..
