Hans Lang's "Mariandl" by Peter Cornehlsen, baritone - Kurt Henkels & Leipzig Radio Dance Orchestra
This early postwar 78rpm disc record brings us Peter Cornehlsen and his vocal group, who might be just as well known for German dubs of Disney films in the 1950s-1970s! The "Cornel Trio", "Coronels", "Cornels", "Telestars", and many other groups had various connections and covered a wide range of Schlager and even American pieces in German language. No surprise that they would appear on Amiga, Decca, Telefunken, and Polydor accompanied by the prolific Kurt Henkels & his Leipzig Radio Dance Orchestra. This piece was from the 1947 film "Der Hofrat Geiger", composed by Hans Lang & Kurt Nachmann.
The clarinet soloist might be Rolf Kühn [yes, of Hamburg Radio Orchestra fame], and the fun piano accompaniment is courtesy Günter Oppenheimer [no known relation].
Displaying artistic talent at a young age, Kurt Henkels studied both graphic design and music in high school. As a violinist and saxophonist, he became a bandleader of a small ensemble, what became one of many "working bands" in interwar Germany - the American analogue would be czcams.com/video/CwM4lHnzoqY/video.html
This ensemble never made any records, but it played to advantage when World War 2 began, Henkels was drafted into the Wehrmacht Music Corps instead of winding up in combat like future colleagues Walter Eichenberg, Fips Fleischer, Fred Frohberg, and others. He led a military dance band in Danzig for much of the war.
A 1950s retrospective even credits Belgian bandleader Fud Candrix with inspiring his turn toward swing, when Henkels saw Candrix live in Berlin. When Henkels was evacuated and relocated to Leipzig and married Maggie Koch, he assisted with some radio recording tests just as the war was ending. This connection proved fruitful; Henkels established a larger ensemble in the style of American dance bands that were making waves in German music, and when the Soviets took over, they made sure to have a friendly commissar running the broadcast section. When auditions were announced for a house band to play Leipzig's dance broadcasts, Henkels saw an opportunity. His ensemble's Glenn Miller sound won out, and the friendly Soviet commissar gave Henkels artistic license to play Western hits along with various Schlager arrangements. This ensemble won numerous competitions, leading to a recording contract with Ernst Busch's Lied der Zeit, on the Amiga label's Sonderklasse jazz series - this is one of the earliest Henkels/Leipzig records from 1948. Henkels would remain a fixture of the label for a decade, and the Leipzig ensemble would have a second home in East Berlin as its house orchestra. It wasn't to last, but the impact was made.
I'm always amazed at the HMV 102 portable gramophone's ability to put out a huge sound with great fidelity, thanks to the Victor Orthophonic-type exponential folded horn - and when combined with this microphone, the results are pretty good. Acoustic gramophones were made after the war in significant numbers, ranging from the venerable HMV 102 to Telefunken and even various Soviet copies. This particular record has a fast lead-in groove from the very edge - the starting notes are really that abrupt, as well!

Вальс/waltz medley "I'm Drowning My Sorrows" & "La Môme Aux Boutons" - Ray Colignon, Melodiya 78rpm
zhlédnutí 74Před měsícem
Eddie Brandt & Paul Frees wrote "I'm Drowning My Sorrows", Jacques Lecome & Pierre Louki wrote "La Môme Aux Boutons", and the Latin bit should be "Return to Me"... Always keeping up with the times, the Soviet Union continued production of 78rpms throughout the 1960s! These seem to be made with some plasticine mixture [maybe vinyl & smooth shellac?] as they have some flex, but are still thicker ...

This "foxtrot" medley consists of "Kiss Kiss Polka" by Willy "Lustenhouwer" Lapouter & Louis Marischal [and can be heard at czcams.com/video/TrL6cKY5Z48/video.html as well], James Pierpont's famous "Jingle Bells", and Josef "Marais" Pessac's "Suikerbossie" or "Sugar Bush Polka". Herbert Grenzebach & Erika Woezel's "Heute Spielt die Kapelle" - Quartinos on 1962 Neckermann 45rpm
zhlédnutí 51Před měsícem
"To-day the Band is Playing", credited to "Borders & Schmidt" ["Borders" being a pun on Herbert Grenzenbach's name, "Schmidt" being the Schlager-pseudonym of Erika Woezel], is one of many pseudo-Bavarian oom-pah Schlager pieces. It makes sense for it to back "Holzhacker-Dixie" despite being rather generic. Interestingly, another cover of this piece involved a group who also recorded a cover of ...
Fred Miebach & Karl Kuhn's "Holzhacker Dixie" by the Quartinos - 1962 Neckermann 45rpm vinyl disc
zhlédnutí 552Před měsícem
While the Kurt Henkels & Leipzig Radio Dance Orchestra version is my personal favorite, this is definitely a Top 3 contender considering the extended band break near the end, with some elements common to the Henkels recording as well as others! czcams.com/video/zYcT7xNn0ts/video.html Songwriters Miebach, Kuhn, and Blecher wrote a number of popular pieces [Blecher translated and/or wrote German ...
Kurt Engel's "Auf und Ab" [Up & Down] - xylophone with Kurt Henkels & Leipzig Radio Dance Orchestra
zhlédnutí 60Před měsícem
This early postwar 78rpm disc record is a neat collaboration of pre-war artists re-establishing their careers - Kurt Engel was a talented mallet percussionist, here gracing xylophone [or marimbaphone due to its tone]. Adolf Terschak's "Remembrance" flute solo - Arthur Husted (Norwalk, Ohio) - 1890s brown wax cylinder
zhlédnutí 22Před měsícem
The flute could record on cylinder quite well, when the recorder was set up properly! From www.library.ucsb.edu/OBJID/Cylinder8176 - this abridged version of an old Adolf Terschak piece is a bit mysterious. There doesn't seem to be an "Arthur Houston" in Norwalk, Ohio [near Toledo]. I listened to the announcement again, and noticed the slightly stuffy tone; perhaps the announcer is saying "Hust...
"The Holy City" by Grace Marvin (Norwich, NY) soprano & reed organ, ca. 1892-1900 brown wax cylinder
zhlédnutí 31Před měsícem
I hate to just put a tombstone photo, but that's all I could find... Composed in 1892 by Michael Maybrick as "Stephen Adams" with lyrics by Frederic Weatherly, "The Holy City" became an immensely popular hymn, "perhaps the most pirated musical piece prior to the Internet" as Adrian Johns put it. That gives us a starting point for this somewhat mysterious brown wax cylinder recording (UCSB Cylin...
Leon Carr's "Les Grenadiers du Roi" by Hector Delfosse, accordion - ca. 1954 78rpm
zhlédnutí 38Před 2 měsíci
I don't know if "King's Grenadiers" is supposed to be the English title [as Carr was based in the US], but this catchy march was covered by various French artists, in addition to Belgian Delfosse's accordion cover. Carr wrote famous jingles as well as numerous minor hits, and Delfosse was popular for several decades. From archive.org/details/78_les-grenadiers-du-roi_hector-defosse-et-son-ensemb...

Admittedly this isn't my favorite version [that goes to Kurt Henkels & Leipzig Radio Dance Orchestra!], but it's a fun musette-orchestra cover of a German hit from the 1950s. Delfosse was relatively popular for several decades, and songwriters Miebach, Kuhn, and Blecher wrote a number of popular pieces [Blecher translated and/or wrote German lyrics to numerous tunes]. "Why Couldn't It Be Poor Little Me?" - California Ramblers on 1925 acoustic Columbia 78rpm & HMV 102
zhlédnutí 26Před 2 měsíci
Acoustically recorded in January 1925, right before Columbia fully implemented Western Electric's recording system, this fun piece is one of many fantastic sides from the California Ramblers! Much has been written about them, but their name was intended to mask many members' origins in the Midwest and East Coast, giving an "exotic Western" flair. The personnel varied a bit, but eventually settl...

Somewhat inspired by [but not nearly as creative as] @JuiceOne's Simpsons Sugarposting...! Instead we have some clips of Fips Fleischer, Horst Fischer, and Kurt Henkels with the Leipzig Radio Dance Orchestra from the 1957 film "Spielbank-Affäre". The highs were rather distorted, so I had to turn them down to keep the sound from being overly crackled...

i was 10 when i lost my cat to an accident. i remember seeing his lifeless body, crying while saying “please wake up, please come back home.” this episode came out that same year, and it made me relive that fateful day again. especially when SpongeBob said a similar line to Gary to come back home (even though he technically didnt “lose” Gary).
And I’m late TO ANOTHER SONG

I remember that my older brother gave me this phone but in black. Their incoming call ringtones and text messages had a big impact on me, even more so because of my ex-girlfriend back in 2008. What I do regret is that I exchanged that phone for another Nokia 5300 that had a camera and was a slider, which to tell the truth , I gave in to the temptation of having one with a camera and mp3 player. Well, they are things and experiences that you commit as a child.
