The Power of the People: Direct Democracy in California's Political Landscape
This video delves into the transformative impact of direct democracy in California politics. Exploring the philosophical underpinnings and practical implementations of direct democracy through referendums, initiatives, and recalls, the lecture contrasts these mechanisms with representative democracy's limitations and strengths. The viewer is guided through historical and contemporary examples, illustrating how direct democracy shapes the political fabric of California and poses significant questions about citizen engagement, the influence of special interests, and the balance of power in democratic governance. Dive into the dynamic interplay of political power, voter participation, and legislative processes in the Golden State, and uncover the complexities and consequences of putting legislative power directly in the hands of the people.

Taiwan and Penghu are leftover issues from World War II. See Treaty of San Francisco. At the time, the U.S. government helped the Chinese Nationalist Party (Republic of China), which had been defeated in the Chinese Civil War, escape to Taiwan, which was then a Japanese colony. Look at Formosa betrayed. Formosa is the original name of Taiwan. After the Chinese Kuomintang came to Taiwan, it still maintained dictatorial rule, but moved towards democracy under pressure from the United States, and the Taiwanese entered the Republic of China to fight for their rights. The Chinese who lost their privileges in Taiwan united with the People's Republic of China to steal Taiwan and Penghu.

Regarding California's fast food wage hike to $20 from $16, a worker at McDonalds told me the franchise owner cut hours -- especially overtime hours which was $22, nobody was laid off, the prices were not increased, the restaurant didn't go out of business, and the workers are happier as they have a bigger paycheck without working overtime hours to pay their bills. You could even guess that the only major change is that the workers have to work more efficiently -- but they are able to due to not being as tired having 8 hour shifts rather than 12 hour shifts. Or 32 hour weeks compared to 40 hour weeks. And they are willing to work more efficiently as well because they are happier. If the restaurant owner is even halfway decent with math, they'll see that they can solve the problem by cutting hours not jobs. I have a b.s. in business from hsu, but if i wanted to propose a masters thesis in econ, it might be "less hours and higher pay = no change to profitability due to workers working more efficiently from being less tired and happier." And i am guessing if salaried workers were given 32 hour work weeks (fridays or mondays off w 3 day weekends) at the same pay and benefits, they'd work harder as well, also resulting in no change in profit.

Since resources on planet Earth are finite, it makes more sense that we use Relative gains because after the agreement is done, the other country would have more purchasing power than us, meaning that they would be able to outperform our economy, out-buying resources or whatever in the free market, which ultimately puts us at a disadvantage. Resources are finite and therefore Earth IS a zero-sum game.

Economic liberalism is an ideology that is an integral part of conservative social thought about minimal government intervention in the economy of a nation and about complete freedom for individuals in the economy. In history, countries had the highest rates of GDP growth and living standards in those times when the state intervened in the economy, supported domestic producers, subsidized them and provided them with preferential loans. Examples, Russia (period 1929-1955), China, South Korea. Data for countries around the world whose economies grew at double-digit (almost double-digit) rates for more than 20 years in the 20th century are given below: 1. 13.8% - Russia - average annual growth for 22 years (1929-1955). 2. 11.5% - Taiwan - average annual growth for 27 years (1947-1973). 3. 10.4% - China - average annual growth for 25 years (1983-2007). 4. 10.2% - South Korea - average annual growth for 23 years (1966-1988). 5. 9.7% - Japan - average annual growth for 23 years (1948-1970). 6. 9.2% - Singapore - average annual growth for 24 years (1966-1989). Thus, in the twentieth century, the world's largest national economic growth for more than 20 years was achieved in Russia in 1929-1955 (minus four war years). During this period, real wages grew 4 times, citizens’ deposits in savings banks grew 5 times, and the economy grew 14 times. And: - First place in the world in terms of the share of mechanical engineering in the total volume of industrial production. - Complete technical and economic independence of the state has been ensured. - First place in the world in terms of agricultural mechanization. - First place in Europe and second in the world in terms of absolute industry size. - First place in Europe and second in the world in terms of labor productivity in industry. - The latest industries and advanced technologies: nuclear, space, rocketry, aircraft manufacturing, instrument making, radio engineering, electronics, electrical engineering and others. And sanctions did not prevent such economic growth in Russia.
