Santa Ana River Trail from San Bernardino to Huntington Beach
Very cool to see this ride from Azusa to Seal as I've ridden the trail a few times, so it was fun to see the familiar sights including the Hang Out Restaurant, Thanks & maybe see you on the trail someday.
Glad it brought back good memories for you. Thanks for watching the channel, commenting, and subscribing. See you on the trial.
Biked it many times. You should definitely ride through the Savage Tunnel.
We did the whole GAP two summers ago, we loved the tunnel. Thanks for watching and commenting.
You guys are lucky to have that trail it’s rare to have a dedicated bike trail from the clayey to to ocean I live in Ventura Ca. & we have a 30 + miles trail going from Ventura to Ojai Valley

@@beyondthedriveway1839 I did!!! of course I did! I love these vids!!!
What’s the time table for such a ride ?
3 hours at 10 mph but cut that in half if you do 20 mph on an ebike. The train ride back is 2 hours.
If you start early in the morning, you can make it easily in 2 to 2 1/2 hours. But if you start later, say after 10 or 11 o’clock, you’ll be facing headwinds pretty much all the way down so that adds a lot of time. On the flipside, if you leave from seal Beach and head north to Azusa, sometimes you can get a pretty good push the whole way.
Great video. I've ridden the San Gabriel River bike path for nearly 40 years. FYI, the second street crossing, which is crosses Whittier Boulevard, can be avoided be using the tunnel adjacent to the bike path.
@@socalhomies I never noticed the tunnel. Thanks for letting me know, I’ll look for it the next time I ride it. Thanks for watching my channel, and your comments.
Las Vegas has many of these dedicated bike roads. The one called the River Mountain trail along Lake Mead goes 36 miles but it’s very challenging with many serious inclines.
Good to know, I'll check it out and try to make plans to ride it. Thanks for watching and the trail info.
For someone without a car how can you get to the start of the San Gabriel River Trail? You mentioned MetroLink on the end, but how about Amtrak? I live in San Diego and would love to do this ride.
Thanks for watching, and subscribing. Yes, for you this would be very easy to do. Just take the Amtrak to Grand Central Station in Los Angeles, then jump on the metro line (L/Gold Line) and take it to the Duarte/City of Hope exit. Then use Google maps to get you to Encanto Park, which is about a mile away from that metro line stop. I’m not sure the easiest way to get home from seal Beach, but I would imagine you could pick something up at a Long Beach. Enjoy, let me know how it works out for you.
Yes. You can take Metrolink from Oceanside or Amtrak from San Diego (more expensive) to Los Angeles Union Station. From Union Station take the Metro Rail A Line to Azusa/Downtown. Get on your bike and ride north on N Azusa Ave (Hwy 39). Turn off to the right on Ranch Rd and continue north. When Ranch Rd comes back into Hwy 39 cross the highway and get onto the San Gabriel River Trail (SGRT). Ride north on the SGRT to the "end" of the trail. Distance from the train station is only 2.6 mi. Ride the 38 mi to the "beginning" of the SGRT at Seal Beach. To get to a Metrolink/Amtrak station by a scenic route on bike paths and roads mostly with bike lanes you can ride 26 mi to the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center. From the SGRT at Seal Beach go east on Ocean Ave. Ocean become Seal Beach Blvd as it swings north. Turn right on Pacific Coast Hwy and continue to Sunset Beach. Turn toward the beach on Anderson St and left on South Pacific Ave. Where it ends at a cul-de-sac continue parallel to the beach on the Bolsa Chica asphalt "boardwalk". Take this "boardwalk" through Bolsa Chica State Beach, Huntington City Beach, and Huntington State Beach. When you get to the Santa Ana River Trail (about 12.6 mi from Seal Beach) turn inland on it and ride 13 mi to the Anaheim train station. From Anaheim take Metrolink or Amtrak back to Oceanside or San Diego. Of course the Metrolink or Amtrak schedules are key. A related fun bike trip is to start in Seal Beach, ride parallel to the coast to Long Beach and then ride north on the Los Angeles River Trail (LART) to Union Station (31 m). Take Metro Rail A Line to Azusa, and ride back to Seal Beach (38 mi). Of course you could also start in Azusa or anywhere along the loop route. The difficulty is that the LART ends at S Atlantic Blvd and doesn't start up again until near Elysian Park. City streets must be used to get from S Atlantic Blvd to Union Station. I know a route that is safe (IMO) for an experienced cyclist. I can write it out if anyone is interested. You can also make the loop smaller by connecting the LART to the SGRT via Gardendale St/Foster Road or via the Rio Hondo Bikeway between Imperial Blvd (@ the LART) and Whittier Narrows (@ the SGRT).

I was there earlier today and got a drink at the freshwater. It was delicious. 🤤
That’s great, are you doing the race?
This is was a really good video. Simple and clear at a nice pace. It helped me double check my own loadout and make sure I wasn't missing anything. If you keep it up I can see you gaining more views and subscribers! One point of constructive criticism though: I was watching it through my headphones, and I only have audio in my left ear.
Sorry, I thought I responded to this a while ago (typed it, but must not have sent). Glad you liked the video. I did check out the problem with the audio, it was only on headphones, figured out the problem. Thanks again, enjoy your rides.
I can tell you with absolute certainty that my bikes are more physically prepared than I am! 😅
I know that feeling. But right now I'm training for a few good rides this summer. Hope you have some planned as well. Thanks for watching the video and commenting.
great video, i think i will give it a try. can you tell where is the second street crossing or the name? thanks
Thanks for watching, glad you liked it. The second street crossing is Whittier Blvd, just off the Whittier exit of the 605 Freeway. At about the 18 mile mark before the end of the train in Seal Beach. Enjoy the trail, let me know how it goes for you.
I enjoyed your video. I just purchased a used Co-Motion Periscope. I noticed the rack on your vehicle. How does the support attach near the bottom bracket? Where did you buy the rack? Thanks
Glad you enjoyed the video. Just checked out the Periscope, very nice, is this your first tandem? The rack I have is a Yakima Sidewinder, I've had it for years. It pivots at the front fork attachment which makes it super easy to use with just one person doing the loading. There are 2 straps in front of the stoker cranks that attach the frame to the rack. The rack is still available on line, but not directly through Yakima any longer. I've made modifications to work with Yakima's JetStream bars, quicker to install, and I lowered the rear height. If you want to talk further about the rack, let me know.
thank you for making this video. I am a bike packer and always looking for places to ride and explore. Very well done. Thanks⚓
Glad you liked it, and thanks for letting me know. The C&O is a beautiful trail, you'll love it.
Thanks for the great info! I ride the trails along The Empire State Trail all the time and hope to see you along the way!
Glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for letting me know. I'll be riding the Empire State Train in August, see you then.
Amazing video thank you so much!! How do you avoid and pass each other on the trial safely. Getting ready for it this year!
Thank for watching, glad you liked it. Ordinary trail etiquette says the uphill hiker has the right of way. But in a race, you'll need to yield to the down hill runner when its too tight to pass, which is pretty much the case for the upper ⅔'s of the trail. Good luck with the race, but most of all, enjoy it.
I just started short rides in upstate new york
I here its beautiful riding up there, looking forward to riding there this summer. Thanks for watching and connecting.
The GAP and C&O are great, really nice trails, 2016. If you guys head west the Katy Trail in MO rolls through farmland and is a nice trail, ride west to east for 2-3% downhill grade. And the Mickelson in South Dakota travels through woods, but is shorter, not many people ride that one. You can make it longer by looping east through Grasslands National Park near Custer, SD, then head north back to Deadwood for a longer trip. Happy trails!
Thanks for the comments Mike. The Katy is definitely on my ride list. Hadn't heard of the Mickelson in SD, I'll look into it. We make a couple of XC drives each year, always looking for good rides along the way. Happy Trials to you as well.
Great info as always.

Great question, and perfect timing. Karen decided she wants to have these adventures too. To that end, we ordered a gravel tandem (CoMotion Java) that is designed to handle multi-day rides. What , if any predators would there be ...im in Colorado and we have just about every predator in the U.S even wolves again.. Lol..
Thanks for watching, and reaching out. We've encountered a few snakes (black and rattle) enjoying the sun along the trial, but they scurry off pretty quick at the sound of the tires. Although we did run over one snake, a surprise to us and it. There are bears in the area, but we didn't encounter any. I've mountain biked many miles in Colorado over the years, pre-dating this channel, many encounters, but none, other than shakes, that worried me.

Any plans for an Erie Canal trip?
Definitely on the list of must do rides. We may do all or part of it next year. Have you done it?
Looks like you were blessed with dry weather leaving Cumberland. Your experience would have been somewhat different under wet conditions. If you rode up the Paw Paw Tunnel bypass, I’m duly impressed. Did you get the tomato pie at the Town Hill B&B? If you are going to upstate NY and liked the C&O, consider the Erie Canal Trail from Buffalo to Albany.
We did have great weather. I'm have a mountain biking background, so the the Paw Paw detour was not an issue on my gravel bike. Although I've never did that type of ride with panniers before.
