God I wish I had more time to think about surfing like this and make it my life but all I ever get is a couple weeks a year at the ocean and the best I've ever been able to muster in my life is a meager few rides where I nailed the turn and rode the open face to the break all the way to the beach on a big ol' long boy. Holy crap though, when it all comes together there is NOTHING like surfing. Honestly at this point in my life I am so desperate to touch the brutal force of nature that I just prefer the boog but I'd definitely surf if I lived by the ocean.
Surfed North Shore Oahu for 7 years. Moved to land locked Utah. Moving to Port Orange Fl next year. So I have been getting exited to get wet again. You seem like a great guy to surf with. Hope we can link up in the near future! Your videos are great!
What kind of board is that one with the dog on it?
Electra are best bang for the buck cruisers by far..I spent a bit more and went with a Priority Coast cruiser with the rust free belt drive..with the surf racks that mount on the head tube and seat post... I can get even my 9'0 on it

You win. Tides running in and out make it look challenging. You could proably even jump in the inlet with a long board and try the rip. Just don't splash around so much over the hole. 😅
Been buy Sebastian Inlet numerous times. The break on the North side next to the jetty is one of the best surf spots in Florida. When its good there is usually wave bounce off the jetty, producing an above average wave. The south side of the inlet is way different. It looks like a mirage out there. A way offshore sand bar with frequent strong tidal water going in and out of the inlet. The sand bar moves around daily. In all the times I've been by there I've only seen surfers out there once. My own opinion is there are too many large sharks in the area to surf that side of the inlet. The wave pitch is deceiving. You may find you need a long board to catch anything there. The north side by the jetty is way safer.
Beautiful video. As I consider again, I am reminded of the Fort Pierce Inlet and the 1/2 mile from shore sandbar. Also a brave spot. The Fort Pierce sandbar also extends over 20 miles north to Orchid, and seems to keep crawling North everyear! I should check that spot again. Great shots! Love the video. : )
The only other stories I've heard about surfing the inlet sandbar in Sebastian Inlet was by surfers doing mushrooms back in the 70's. 😜 There was more free parking.
The other thing was if you want to fish outside the inlet, it's really too dangerous for small boats.
Man this was my first taste of real Florida surfing. That whole winter was epic. The whole coast lit up. I remember a road trip down to Miami for either this swell or possibly a later one around January?

Just stumbled across this. Great to hear the whole story, didn't realize it was Kech that was the initial inspiration for John coming up with the chop hop air reverse. Always thought John's never been properly credited for paving the way to the air reverse - a kind of "manufactured" air reverse these days with little use of the lip to boost is not much different than what he was doing almost a decade before anyone learned to do a proper one. I surfed in pro-ams in the boys and juniors when John was competing as a pro. We were blown away the first time we saw him pull one, just couldn't fathom it. Futch was routinely doing incredibly whippy tail blow off the lips at First Peak around then. I remember my older brother shaped a twin fish circa 1979 or 80 that he was completely airing out non-ollie style off the lips on at First Peak one day, but usually falling upon reconnecting. He later said he just thought they were mistakes, losing connection with the lip, so he wasn't really trying to land coming down. Growing up then Mulhern was an older distant hero, but when I lived in Oaxaca for a decade near Barra 07-17 I got to know him from his trips down there, and we'd talk story about the old days at the Inlet.
I’m going to start surfing on a 7 10 NSP mini mal in central FL. Can’t wait for this years surf.
Had my left foot nearly torn in half at ponce inlet back in august of 95. 45 stitches. Some tips to reduce a shark encounter. Don’t surf alone. Go for the popular crowded spots. Try not to surf in murky water. Sharks are more likely to bump or test bite you in murky water. Don’t surf during twilight hours. Early morning and late afternoon/evening. This is prime feeding time. And try not to surf when bait fish are present. When I got bit I broke all these rules.

Love your videos. Your narration reminds me of Bruce Brown's in the Endless Summer. Grew up in Orlando, learned to surf at Cocoa Beach Pier in late 80s. Haven't surfed in ages but rented my son and I boards on a recent visit to see my parents. Pushed him into some dribblers and caught a few myself. Was a ton of fun. Might even get a board and leave it there for future visits. Keep up the great work.

Hey, I just discovered your channel. I grew up in NSB and after decades away, I'm moving back to the area. In the video, you recommend an 8ft foamy for these typical small mushy days. My question, would you advise against a 9' 4" fiberglass log under the same conditions? Would the board / fin simply take a beating that close to shore? Or what're your thoughts? Thanks! Subscribed!
Very cool! I recommend the softy for the on the beach waves for sure, nothing beats it. I have an 8 foot softy that is light and fat and will catch anything. Thank you for a great video and awesome tips. Just a quick question...where was this in terms of the general location? Was it Gulf side or Atlantic side. If Atlantic side, was it north or south of Sebastian Inlet? The reason I ask is because Ive read that conditions vary in Florida....the Gulf is flatter and choppier than the Atlantic and the Atlantic side is often flat opposite the Bahamas, but gets decent swells in Central Florida. Im trying to get my child into surfing and want to know should I fly into Miami, Tampa, or Orlando (Cocoa Beach). Thank again

Great video, I grew up surfing in NY and I couldn’t agree more about how different the coastlines are. Long Island was almost all beach break so surfing New England was always super fun for me. I’ll be moving to Portland Maine in a month and I can’t wait to get back in the water after being land locked in the Rockies for the past 5 years. I’ve surfed Maine a bunch when I was younger but never even thought about sharks being up there with how cold the water was, guess I was wrong lol
