    Hello John I love your instructions- best I have found for solving all those little issues that other potters forget to tell a learner potters. I also like that you are left handed- much easier for me to understand how you are doing something without contorting myself around to mirror image the hand postions etc and take into account the way the wheel is spinning as I was taught to throw right handed and not until I got into very detailed trimming did I strike problems. Tried to reverse wheel but oh what a mess 😂 Thanks again John, you’re a great teacher! BTW - is your mum the hilarious potter on Instagram - you both have similar expressions 😂

    I've watched this video a few times. I do love texture on a pot. Recently my instructor has been teaching hybrid pots. She throws a base on the wheel, either flat disk or slight bowl shape. Then she rolls a long narrow strip out on the slab roller and adds texture using a roller to the slab. Then she attaches the slab to the thrown base while still on the wheel, giving it textured walls. From there, she gives it her preferred shape and lip. I have done a few of these but find the attachment really difficult at the base and also the side seam. I'm wondering if you would consider doing a video on this? I'd love to hear your comments and instruction on something hybrid.

    The best thing about pottery is after 10 years throwing on the wheel, I can watch a video for beginners and still get useful information that will make a difference in my work. I love a round bottom bowl and have been really working on getting a beautiful curve. We've been debating at the studio go to ribbing the inside of the bowl from top to bottom or from bottom to top. Is there a technical reason you do it from top to bottom?

    • @JohnHasegawaCeramics
      @JohnHasegawaCeramics Před měsícem

      Starting from the top gives me more control and a better view of what is happening. It seems to be the way how most others make their bowls as well.

    I love the self-sufficiency (and cost saving) of making my own tools. I used fine gauge nichrome wire and made clay handles that feel good in my hand, then bisque-fired them. I was able to make a number of sizes and shapes, even double-sided. @@JohnHasegawaCeramics Yes sir, I will make suggestions for videos. My first suggested video idea--> clay....here's my dilemma. I first bought all of my equipment(kiln, slab press, wheel), clays, glazes, tools and such about 9.5 years ago. For close to 2 months I watched videos, read books and did whatever I could to learn all about pottery. I have a large gray container (large plastic gray garbage can that I've never used) with clay that I put in the container when I failed on the wheel. It was wet then, but after 9.5 years it is now bone dry. I need clay and I need to practice wedging to build up my muscles. What can I do to my bone dry clay to get it so that I can practice on the wheel again? I also have a few full bags of clay that has completely dried out since 9.5 years. How can I get the heavy bags of dry clay to be workable clay I can use to practice wedging and throwing? Do you need to know what kind of clay I have? Any and all help is sooooo graciously appreciated. Thank you in wdvance!

    • @user-ug5sb6qg1u
      @user-ug5sb6qg1u Před 28 dny

      Just add water, seal in plastic bag(s), wait a few days, up to a week. Check it, if it isn't plasticine add more water, if it's too thin add more clay, you can also leave too wet clay out for a day or two to dry a bit then re-bag. Do it until you can make a piece about the size of a pencil and wrap it around your finger and it doesn't crack.

      @JohnHasegawaCeramics Před měsícem

      Controlling how fast your clay dries is so important. Leather hard is that last real chance you have to add on clay. It if is bone dry it will just fall off or crack later (most likely).

    3:10 The concept John is talking about here can be really useful if you work on 1/4 inch masonite bats. Sometimes you'll find they warp a little bit. The center will bow outward in one direction. You're supposed to dry them upright to limit this from happening, but it still does at times. I realized something interesting, though. There's an easy way to straighten them that doesn't require pressing under weights. Seems to work every time. What you want to do is saturate the bat with water on both sides. Take note of the direction it's warping to. Set the bat upright, with the warped side facing to the room and the other side towards a wall in your studio. Not directly against the wall. Leave an inch or two if you can. The idea is that because if air circulation the side facing out will dry faster than the one sat close to the wall. That will cause a reverse warp, so the bat effectively unwarps itself.

    • @JohnHasegawaCeramics
      @JohnHasegawaCeramics Před 2 měsíci

      That is a very interesting idea and we will need to try it out. Thank you for the suggestion.

    • @davezad
      @davezad Před 2 měsíci

      You're welcome! I came upon it by accident. Your explanation of how warping happens suddenly made it click as to why this works. But I just noticed, I should clarify my previous post. The warped side that needs to face out is the one bowing up. If you set the bat flat on a table and it has a little bit of a rise in the center, face the part that bulges up towards the wall. It's like the uneven drying works as a dent puller, for lack of a better analogy.

    You are so helpful. Any tips on keeping the inside centered as I open larger pieces of clay on the wheel?

    • @JohnHasegawaCeramics
      @JohnHasegawaCeramics Před 2 měsíci

      Tips for opening large pieces of clay: make sure your wheel speed is slower than normal. As a general rule the smaller the piece of clay the faster your wheel speed, and the larger the slower. For very larger pieces go very slow. Second tip - try throw larger pieces a lot. You will start off kind of bad but you will improve in time, slowly. This will make you a much better thrower over all, cup and regular bowls will later become some much more easy to make.
