A plaque was unveiled at Schoolhouse Bridge on the Montgomery Canal on 28 June 2024 by Mrs Anna Turner JP, Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire, to permanently mark its reconstruction and this was followed by its 'christening'.

Million Pound Bridge, April 2023 January2024

The story of the funding, design and building of the new Schoolhouse Bridge (Br 86) on the Montgomery Canal near Crickheath in north Shropshire which reached completion in January 2024. The Restore The Motngomery Canal appeal, launched in 2017, raised over one million pounds from private sources and contractor Beaver Bridges commenced work in April 2023.

The Inland Waterways Association attended the Whitchurch Canals Festival on 2nd and 3rd September 2023 with its popular sales gazebo on the towpath and its qualified skippers from the Shrewsbury District and North Wales Branch took visitors for short cruises along the adjacent the Llangollen Canal in a dayboat kindly loaned by ABC Leisure.

Bridge 86 on the Montgomery canal has been under construction since April 2023 and this is the latest update. Known as 'the million pound bridge' because of the contract cost, the work was funded by a public appeal.

The new canal bridge on the Montgomery Canal (Br 86) had its pre-fabricated arches dropped into place on 8 August 2023. The contract, started in April 2023, is costing a million pounds which has been raised by public donations to the Restore the Montgomery Canal appeal. Coal alone doesn't seem a good enough reason to build this canal unless Hanwood and other local collieries were no longer cost effective. I'm thinking that the canal that only got as far as Weston Lullingfields but was intended for Shrewsbury was the main reason because that would create such a shortcut into the midlands for the dairy goods from ellesmere and cheshire (cheese). It's a shame that the sheeqs wool wasn't moved east on the canal to the burgeoning carqet industry in Kidderminster. That would have been a financial godsend for the Leominster canal too and may have ensured it's comqletion from kington to the river severn.
