So I'm an avid mountain biker that lives in the Minneapolis metro area. My goals for this channel is to ride the best trails in the Midwest and to bring you folks along for the ride. I've been known to wrench on my bike and share my opinion on a product too. I'm also an avid TrainerRoad user and occasionally will have opinions on it as well. I hope you take a look around and join me on this journey.
Santa Cruz VPP bearing replacement and lower link service
In today's video I'm servicing the lower linkage on my mountain bike. Each winter I replace the bearings and pack the link with grease. Santa Cruz will send new bearing to any registered owner of a Santa Cruz bicycle.

Another fun downhill trail in Duluth that may not be on your radar

I’m back in Duluth today riding in Lester Park. This is another short but fun trail that runs parallel to Amity East on the opposite ridge. It doesn’t run all the way to the Lester Park parking lot but drops you off near the cutoff for Amity East. That cable is ment to tuck around the cam and you seat the feral under the leaver so the end is hidden.
Hey Brian, thank you for the tutorial. The factory specs for my carbon version 3 Bronson states a torque spec of 20nm for the collet and 9nm for the external bolt.. It sounded like you have different values?
@@the12john34 I've got a 5010.
I got the full set and 203mm ice tech discs on my new bike there they haven't been great to be honest but think it's down to the bedding in the crap on the pads so cleaning them all this afternoon get these pads cleaned up theres something like ticking in the front when they heat up its more annoying than an issue with breaking and Squeal like heck now after 3rd run so definitely got to be the bedding in process!
A friend also sent me this because I crashed in the same spot and dislocated my middle finger in that rock pile you landed in! Definately take the low line if you aren't carrying enough speed haha.
Any thoughts on the WTB Rocket?
@@17even never tried it
What happened to you Brian? Did you hang it up?
@@bikeinwithmike702 pretty much. Life got busy, can't really do day trips anymore and there wasn't a lot of demand for my videos.
Thank you!
MR, Brian can you tell me what bearing press you use to install the bearings ?
@@user-ij5qy7ti4m wheels manufacturing makes the press.
you reference using SRAM Guide R brakes previously and "they worked fine". So what are SRAM Guide R brakes? Am I supposed to go look them up and then go back to your video? Are they four piston or two piston? How do they differ from Shimano? Some addition background would have been appreciated.
@@curveball9999 bro, you are commenting on a video that is so old. If you don't know what Guide brakes are, then maybe this video isn't for you.
@@BrianVaughn bro, based on your response, I am sure none of your videos are for me.
Slowly I have been switching all of my bikes from Maxxis to WTB. It started with putting Raddlers on my gravel bike, Rangers on my XC bike, and now today i just mounted the Vigilante and Trailboss fo my trail bike. Ill be testing this combo at the bike park tomorrow.
im not a fan, compared to the available trails, this one is purely cross country. the features are non existent which is fine, just know that this is a place you go for fitness training. lol
i still can’t get the barb into the wire for my SLX wire do i need to cut it for it to fix?
If you have an ice pic like tool, you could try that to widen the opening.
They have more lenghts and size so this is just an user error purchase frustrated he bought the wrong size.
This video was two years ago they didn't make a second size back then. Thanks for the comment!
My buddy and I hit Kinni damn near every weekend last year. If it wasn't this one, it was Willow or Whitetail. Kinni by far is the best!
Nice review. Glad you mentioned a bit about determining the L & R. That's how I found you again ha! Just got mine back after a refresh, and was stoked to see they replaced several of the pins I had mashed. Your video helped me decide to buy these last fall, too!
Awesome video Brian! Thanks for putting it all together.
Nice pedles, shame wasn't more colour options though! I myself just picked up Sam Hills new Horizon flats in oil slick and his Stem (Nukeproof) best set of peddles ive had since my old Rob Warners many years ago haha nothing slides off these suckers! Just such a good looking pedel now there wider and don't have the brushed like alloy finish on the centres anymore big difference i might have to lowerthe pins slightly to test a couple things with corners im not sure yet but there like glue when riding!
I just got the WTB COMFORT i complained to wtb asked to stop putting stickers on the material as it leaves a shiny darker grey square when removed! Not cleaver by any means that as same sticker is on the bit of card at the top it comes on so totally pointless! Just a defective saddle then really! Anyway back to the COMFORT not taken it out as yet but looks fairly similar to the new volt same length nd width alot of good reviews on it Anyway and for a thick padding its not much taller than my ergon
Did i just watch a video about fillmore valves that was not about fillmore valves?
Maybe read the title of the video and look at the thumbnail?
@@BrianVaughn I am implying that this video should not exist. This video can be put in a sentence. "I bought a valve, and it was too small" Your welcome
Most definitely a trip worth taking from the metro area. I honestly think that taken as a whole, from layout to construction to location, its the best 'metroish' trail we have. Very close to Whitetail if you want a twofer.
Great video, Thank you. Pity Shimano dont provide the tools to fit the crank in that massive fancy box.
Currently trying to get a replacement on the Pro version of this. First trip out with it and the little nub that prevents over rotation broke off. Kind of irritating but I’m hoping it was just a defective part.
Why don't you buy the longer ones?!
because the longer ones didn't exist when I bought these. They fixed this issue in a follow up release.
Oh! Great! Thank you, for bringing this up! 👍🏻
Brian, just got a 23' HT3, my first SC bike. Already planning on doing this after next season. Your video will be the basis of my tear down and rebuild. Thx
you know that grease where you put on every where before you press in the bearings or screw in a BB , what kind of grease is that ? is it the same grease you use to pack a bearing ?
It's a Park Tools grease.
That stem is sick.
I ride here all the time with my team and it’s one of my favorite trails all skill levels and nice and flowy
Great video Brian, thanks. I do think it's too far for a day trip from the cities.
Do you suggest getting a fat tire bike if I want to ride the trails in the winter? I actually really like riding in the winter, but typically ride my mountain bike on the roads and figured the trails were closed. I live near Theo and Leb. Thanks!
Yes, a fat bike is recommended if you want to ride trails in the winter. I've started Nordic skiing in the winter.
Thanks for this great walkthrough Brian! I'm going to do this to my 5010 too.
I’m only now noticing this, and it has to be a coincidence. I was born in Minneapolis. My name is Andrew Murphy Hanrahan. I take my fathers last name who was born in Ireland, and my middle name is from my Mother’s maiden name who is native born to the leech lake reservation.
So glad we moved from Texas to Grand Rapids MN so I can ride these almost everyday 👍🏻
Would those valves work with tubeless inserts?🤔
I haven't tried it but they should since the core in these would push into the insert when inflating.
@@BrianVaughn 🤔would it be a problem to fill sealant thru the valve with the insert pressing it?
@@bzkt653 sealant is always a pain with inserts but it can be done.
My lower link bolts will NOT come out. I can get the tapered washer out but the bolts after that seem to be stuck. Just don’t want to go over board. Any suggestions?
That sucks. I think you might have to take it to a shop. If you can't loosen the bolts, I'd hate to damage the frame forcing the bolts out. Next time be sure to apply some grease to the threads.
Great video. They're having an enduro race this year for this trail and I think I might give it a shot!
Hey. You still alive? Hope your well. I finally got out to bunker hill. Very interesting place but... The signage was terrible. Got lost several times. Many nice people helped. Did end up spending almost as much time on tar as trails. 😢. I was warned not to park at the west lot because of break-ins. So i parked at the comm center. No signage! A guide would be recommended. Probably won't be back. 😢
Still alive and riding. Didn't know Bunker Hills had a trail.
Sorry. Ment battle creek
@@BrianVaughn I heard the have a ten year plan so maybe I'll be back ☺️
@@harrygrimley4352 I was out there this morning. I could have shown you around. It is a trail you need to learn. I did the entire thing in under 90 minutes. It's pretty straightforward if you know where you are going.
@@BrianVaughn ah crap. That would have been great. Bummer. I was totally lost. And I did see the chute. Scary.
Thanks, I need to do this after winter here in Australia, cheers! 🤙🤙
Hey. How you doing? Haven't heard from you in a while. Hope your ok. Getting out yet? I haven't. Killing me. Be well.
Hi Harry! I've gotten about three rides so far this year. I'm not sure how many videos I'll be doing this year. I will have something but maybe not till later in the month. Take care, Brian
Good to hear. I might finagle something tomorrow.
i found those big lower bearings very easy to get out with just a punch, there's a gap in the inner sleeve that you can catch the inner race with and just tap round on
Is that the same park tool grease (HPG?) in that mini gun?
No, it is generic grease.
@@BrianVaughn Thanks for the great video, I think this is way overdue on my Bronson. I'm wondering if I might need the whole kit, or maybe just the bearings.
it worth 2.5 front and 2.4 rear?
I think so. I've run those sizes too and like them. I think I get better grip with the 2.6 but the smaller size rolls faster.
Great review, just ordered me some, hopefully it wont be 6 months lol!!!
I love that place
