Rodico, or Teachers Tack works wonders for that as well, and it is a low to no residue putty for holding things in place. side note, i hate those flux pens for desoldering work, much prefer a cheap gel flux (20g needle on the end for fine control and less waste)
Thank you very much for this great tutorial. My mouse doubliclick problem is fixed using a soldering iron for the very first time. Without you video I would have bought a new mouse.
Hello, can you not give the model from the ruler?
I've uploaded the PCB ruler files to PCBway's shared community files so everyone can access them. Link in the description on the ruler video.
God damn it. I had a logitech mouse that started losing its left click stability. I pulled it apart in Feb 2020 and with a fair bit of annoyance, managed to bend the spring back and get it back together. It fixed the issue for less than a year. With the trouble I had with getting the spring back, I decided to just buy a new mouse in March 2021. Its now only just over 3 years since I got my new mouse for $99AUD (a 502 hero) and the same thing is already happening. I do like the idea of repairing 2% of the components instead of throwing out 100% of them in a wasteful manner. But 2 switches are about 10% of the cost of replacement for a new mouse + plus extra pads. But more importantly for me, I know this will cost me a several hours of my precious free time, cause me plenty of frustration and I may even break something in the process. Buying a new mouse is so much easier. I can't believe 3-4 years is all I get out of logitech mouse and keyboards these days.
Fun video well done!
I love it... I might throw that into my next JLB basket. Cheers
funny! more more :) +1
this was awesome! a small explanation on what a signal generator is in laymen terms would have helped at the start of the video as i dont have an electronics background. great video though!
Thanks for the feedback!
"Kainkalabs" channel has two really excellent videos on improving the circuit of this kit. It has a lot of weird flaws in the values they've chucked in it. You can likely just search "XR2206" on youtube search and find them By the way, if you want a 'cheap' oscilliscope that's good enough for hobbiest use, I recommend FNIRSI's DPOX180H. Being battery powered means it's mains-earth ground isolated which is nice for beginners. At 2 channels and over 100Mhz it does a lot of good things for a basic scope in small package! And it's cheaper than any "benchtop" scope you could get. A benchtop with good FFT and basic protocol decoding would be 'ideal' to start at, but at a good price point below those, you can get this one.
Kicad is a nice PCB design tool!
The coil generator has a few shorts in the trace at the outer diameter when trace width is greater then 250um (space 200um).
subscribed... keep it up , ty!
That "transform it" plug in should be merged into the main project! thanks
That was cool thx
Awesome video. Super detailed and I feel like if I had these tools already I would attempt this repair.... But for now a solder iron and these switches are going to bring me over the cost of a new one from Amazon....
It's a tough call sometimes. Unfortunately, sometimes it is just better to buy a new one
Very good video. Where can I found this PCB ?
I watched your KiCad plug in video and saw this one. Been through the mouse button issue a few times. Last time I used Kailh Red GM 4.0 switches as a replacement, probably from the same discussions you read, and they have worked great. PS: Thanks for the plug in video, I'll be trying a few of those.
Thanks for the feedback! How do you feel using the Kailh red switches?
@@TerminalCuriosityEE So far I've not had to replace them and its been awhile.
Great work, excellent tutorial and review! 👍😀
Seems expensive compared to some mcu's ...
Great video. These i2c expander are an awesome integrated circuit. For educational the pcf8574 is a good choice, but, if you are developing a product, search for more recent part numbers, I think the PCF of not recomendded for new designers. The TCA9548, for example, is a good choice. Nice video.
Thanks for the great feedback! I agree, the PCF8574 is better suited to education than production. I mainly chose this because it suits an upcoming project I'm working on in the background
The sx1509 is also I2C and has some very powerful features, but with the downside of using a QFN footprint.
Are you Australian?
Sure am!
#1121 LOL 😂🇮🇩
Pads are reusable: just use double-sided tape, it costs a pretty penny
i use rubber cement went reapplying skates
Take an old toothbrush, 70% alcohol or something similar containing alcohol and thoroughly clean all the contacts on the boards, switches, buttons, solder points, wheel and so on. This really helps and physically replacing parts is the last thing you need to do.
If you are doing this kind of repair more often and have a soldering gun at hand, there is easy and fast method to desolder mouse switches. Watch this - czcams.com/video/kPfwK-DSiC8/video.html
BTW, to quickly desolder multiple pins at once you can use some thick copper wire and bridge them first.
I used to replace the switches in my mice. Got bored and tired of it. Bought one with optical switches. It fixed my problems with double clicking.
Desoldering needles are a cheap way to desolder though hole components, though I'll normally just do the same as you despite having both desoldering needles and a desoldering gun. I don't know about plumber's putty, but blutack does a passable job.
A copy, not pro
It's a mockery that you can't buy a solder suction
0:30 why's Nixie Tube youtube channel mentioned here?
Thank you!
Kicad version 6?
These vids are soo cool. I wonder why you have so low sub count. And please Do a full kicad tutorial. Beginner to expert series.
Another great plugin, although currently broken in v8 (in work), is kicad-action-scripts which includes a way to easily add thermal relief holes for your PCB.
Thanks for Pro tip! I'll have to check this one out
Oh, it is so fun to see that you use our coil generator! There is a huge update with new features coming soon!
Kicad 7 was already capable of creating rounded tracks natively
Oh man!!! This is strongly appreciated, thanks for it!!!
That was an easy repair... but in reality most of them are. It's insane how often devices get thrown out as e-waste. I hope your well explained content makes more people curious enough to try it for themselves & recover their broken devices. Cheers!
I hope so too! its a shame how much of this stuff gets thrown in the bin when it can actually be fixed. The owner of this camera was very grateful for this job, as she couldn't find an authorised Logitech technician to look at it and apparently the cameras are over $1000 new.
very ambitious, hope you follow through, sounds exciting.
There have been many great comments pointing out that this was recorded in KiCad 6 and the latest release is KiCad 8. That's my mistake, but I have retested all of these plugins on the latest update and they all work as normal except for "Gerber to Order", which seems to be broken. In the mean time, until that plugin is updated, you can use "Fabrication Toolkit" for JLC PCB and it should work fine, even for other PCB manufacturers. There is an alternative called "PCBway fabrication toolkit" for PCBway, but seems this plugin has also broken during the update.
Published two weeks ago and you are using KiCad 6!!!. Come on. Update the video with KiCad 8.
Why doesn't the ruler 0 start from the edge, i see this repeatedly in this kind of electronic hobbyist rulers, is there a reason no one bothers to put the zero at the edge?
Great question! Generally, having copper traces so close to the edge isn't good practice for a few reasons. Exposed copper on the edge can have issues with tearing, signal integrity, solder defects, shorting the board against a product chassis, etc. In this case none of those really matter because this is all for aesthetics, but the manufacturer may still flag it if they see it in the gerbers because they don't know the application. I could have probably aligned it to the edge and explained that any defects were acceptable, but honestly it was simpler this way and I don't mind having a small offset when measuring things.
@@TerminalCuriosityEE Thanks, Makes sense.
Nice repair!! I look forward to seeing what kind of videos you make next. Just a handy…. Whenever I have a through hole component with short leads, I use a piece of “plumbers putty to hold the component in place for soldering. You have to be particular with the brand you use as the lower quality will leave residue. Thanks for the video. Good luck with future ones!!
Thanks for the feedback and the great tip! I'll have to look into plumber's putty for soldering.
When creating a set of gerbers for JLCPCB, do you still have access to their board population service? I have used that from Easyeda, but with that I can see what parts they stock.
Yes, you just need to manually browse LCSC and find the equivalent part numbers to modify your BOM, then they can do it.
@@benwolfe1301 That sounds like a huge opportunity for me to screw up...
There is dedicated jlcpcb plugin which you are able to pick lcsc numbers within pcb editor
@@mateuszczarnecki1079 Thanks
Maybe you should update this video from version 6 to 8? 🙂
Neatly explained and demonstrated. I liked and subscribed. Well done!
Very helpful hope you get more attention <3
Thankyou for the support :)
Someone who isn't me broke one of those at work. Nice to see how that kind of repair is done!
nice video but why using KiCAD 6.0 ?
It was an old download. I've updated now though, haha
Very nice Tom the point video!! Thanks for sharing. Hope to see more
Great feedback. Thankyou!
