    Shame how the people of Glasgow were use as an experiment by the money people knowing full well theses people had brought Glasgow trough all the rough times of the 2nd World Warbut were not what you would call people who ever had anything of their own as far as Real Estate and therefore gushed about having more room in these shitholes.I am guessing that the designers and highly paid architects that designed them ever lived like that.

    I think that edgit who built it also built the Divis Flats in Belfast and they were pulled down too.

    Do architects ever think about the people who have to live and/or work in their buildings? Fair enough the flats were lovely inside, but balconies 20 storeys up, these grim, dark corridors which make you feel unsafe just looking at them and no facilities for miles. Saying that I live about fifteen miles from Falkirk and the High Flats there are very successful and people who live there love them. They are in a beautiful park (Callendar Park) and they have the town centre nearby.

  • @evelynwilson1566
    @evelynwilson1566 Před měsícem

    Why did they not build them more like the old tenements. They were compact and allowed for green space. They were built of sandstone which worked for the climate and people wouldn't feel disconnected from the street because they were too high. The lesson of Glasgow is that the tenements for the slightly more affluent people are still standing - they were well built, maintained and probably less crowded, as people could afford higher rents.

    My Nana lived in these flats so I was very familiar with them as a kid. Plus I went to school just across the road so they were a constant familiar sight. I grew up in the Stirlingfauld flats on the edge of the gorbals. They were horrible, brutal, filthy shit holes and Glasgow is better off now most of the tower blocks are gone.

    Basil Spence was the architect ( no pun intended ) of quite a few monstrosities, Great Michael Rise in Edinnurgh being another example. Built for the poor families of New Row after its demolition, these tiny flats are to be seen to be believed, damp and with unfeasibly steep concrete steps. One strange thing about my grandma's block is the smell in the common stairwell, god knows what it is but it hasnt changed since the 70's.
