San Diego MTB. Two days riding some north county classics.

Look, this place is no secret, but if the trails are not on Trailforks, I'd rather not advertise the location. Still, every local knows this place, and I'm happy to give tours to anyone who reaches out. Loose, chunky, rocky, steep and always challenging, this place brings the goods. Many thanks to Antonio for first showing me this place a few years back and and for getting me back here on thurs...

While the DJ crowd was crushing the big lines, us MTB riders and a few BMX kids were having fun dialing in the table tops. Even on a Thursday, this place had quite the crowd. It's obvious this is going to be a great addition to the local area. Huge thanks to the buiilders and everyone that made this park happen. Now its time to invest in a dirt jumper.

Riding Elfin Forest truly is an experience. Brutal tech climbs, loose, chunky downhills, incredible views and a beautiful landscape makes Elfin forest a north county classic. This is old school mountain biking at its best. To get the full experience, climb (and hike a bike unless you are a climbing god, up Way up, to Lake Hodges overlook trail, head back to Equine incline loop and do the clockw...
Vail Lake MTB. Enduro race day at Vail...except I'm not racing.

OC MTB. Three MTB trails in Orange County. Long form vertical video
zhlédnutí 101Před 2 měsíci
I thought I'd try something a little different and post a long form vertical video primarily for watching on a smart phone. First trail is 5 Oaks. Second trail is probably the most famous trail in OC that I can't mention by name. The third one is a classic flow trail that again can't be mentioned. If you want to know, just ask your OC friends. They will know them

Rocky Peak MTB. The Grudge, Undertow and Freebird to Hummingbird.

Lance and I spent an epic day at Rocky Peak riding three classic trails, along with a little preview of the Freebird for the next roadtrip. Conditions were a little wetter than I was expecting, and last year's rains have made some changes to the trails. I was hoping after two years of riding and progressing, Rocky Peak would feel a little easier, but these trails are still seriously challenging...
Is the the best trail in So Cal for a hardtail? Top to Bottom run on San Juan trail with the Roscoe
zhlédnutí 340Před 4 měsíci
If someone knows a better trail for a hardtail in So Cal, I'd love to ride it. In my opinion, San Juan trail is custom made for a modern hardtail. Whether it's the upper rocky section, the middle flow, or the tight switchbacks, the Roscoe makes every second of the 30 minute descent fun. This is a long video, so just sit back and enjoy the ride.
San Clemente MTB trails. Lobo after the rains.

Trying (and failing as usual) to Match Justin's pace on Lobo after the rain has done some damage. Someone has been doing drainage work, but one of those drain spots has left a scary bomb hole right before the wood bridge. Even when its running a little Scary, though, Lobo is always a high speed thrill ride.

Nice loop….still can’t figure out where this is 0:27 how did you guys catch the trail from here? Did you climb up through the campground? I usually catch it off of cork screw trail…👍
We started at the base of corkscrew. After that, I was pretty much lost.
ooo i know that area but i havent ridden there yet. ive ridden teds a bunch but i dont think id be able to handle these trails as well as i do others lol
Ted's has pretty serious trails for sure, but it's definitely worth checking out
Hi! Is there puncture thorns on the trails?
Didn't run into any
Thanks for the fast reply, the reason why I asked because my son and I went to Fullerton Loop and we had a lot of thorns in our tires front and rear. I will try Marshall Canyon thank you.
Hell Yeah! I ride roller coaster a bunch...So fun!
Nice stem what brand is that?
I will double check, but I believe I switched to a race face 35mm with pnw 25 mm riser bars. The stock stem put me a little too far out over the front tire and the bars World touch too low for my taste. This is a very capable hardtail but the stock set up is a little to XC for my taste
And of course the Kustom Cap Sugar skull. That's mandatory for every bike I own
It's actually a Spank Spike spoon stem. It's a 40mm stem compared to the 50mm that came on the bike. They are $40 at Jenson.
Wouldn't mind checking out. Looks awesome. I live in Corona but visit SD often. They do look like public trails so not sure why you wouldn't drop pin but open to contacting
If you want to head down here and ride, let me know. Shoot me a message on IG, @outdoorsandiego2020. Unless the trails are on Trailforks, I would rather err on the side of caution
@@outdoorsandiego Open to ride Friday morning? Have plans to ride Thursday evening down that way and could ride in morning before heading back up
@@billbaker9043 Friday would work. Shoot me a message on Instagram to confirm
Which tires did you get?
I ended up staying with the Bontragers. I changed out the rear with a SE 4. I have had bad luck with my Bontrager rear tires ripping a knobby, but the SE4 has withstood some pretty good abuse. Still, when it wears out or rips, I will switch out to a Maxxis DHR 11
Awesome review man just brought one yesterday to get back into mountain biking after a long break
Nice trail. Nice riding!
Lobo is a blast, even if it got a little beat up.
Ynot
I stand corrected
Nice
Great video! Is the jump line close to joons detour ? I’d love to check it out!
50 years old, just started back riding. I used to road bike in my teens, then started mountain biking when I moved to Santee while going through training in San Diego. Kept mountain biking in Virginia, and even did a couple of races. Stopped riding in the late 90's. Just got my Roscoe 8 yesterday, and I've done two rides of about 5 miles each. Living in the New Orleans area, so the trails aren't too crazy, but my wrists and all is sore already just from that little bit of riding. I did add the Shimano clip/flat pedal combo to the bike. I used to always ride clipped in. Now days, I see a lot of videos with people just riding flat pedals with the spikes. Just seems like my feet slip doing that. Hope I get at least a little good at biking like I used to be.
Welcome back. I ride with people who swear by clipless. It's basically a personal preference. For putting in the miles, clipless is best for sure. I just hate them for slow tech. I did put clipless back on my XC bike
Fun to watch! You are fast and getting this up. Nice job
you got to ride with the legend!
It was cool to finally get a full day of riding with Brett. We have run into each other on the trails multiple times, but this was our time getting in a full ride together.
@@outdoorsandiego he is a great person to hang out with and ride with
That Santee? I lived and rode in Santee when I was out there in the early 90's for training.
San Clemente, but I ride at santee a fair amount
Thanks for sharing! Absolutely agree, so many trails on such a small area. Tbh, only that one hill near the Las Ramblas trailhead parking has 6 trails (b-lines, shovelhead, choke&coyote, chucks town, 2ball&bone, g spot) and for me usually that's good enough for a few hours or going up&down :) As for the b-line, I've hiked up the trail before, before I realized that someone can ride on it, and before I've ridden it myself. Now I'd never hike it, neither I'd try climb it on a bike :) So I absolutely understand why you didn't expect to see the two guys climbing :) Btw, just quick question about the Secret S..t. I've never ridden it but based on the map it looks like it ends in some private property complex or so. Are there any problems to ride out of it? Is it some gated community or there some connector back to Las Ramblas trails?
There are two climb outs of S.S where you can get out of the community quickly. I've never had an issue with the homeowners, but I try to be very respectful, so there are no issues.
Little more on its uphill capability, I like that more cuz im a lil more cautious on downhill and like to make it up on uphill? Im in mountains in az and 62 yrs old , been looking at the 8 for over a year havent pulled the trigger yet..Great video and great ride out of the gate, wow im impressed 👏
IT is overall a solid climber. If you want it more for climbing, I would size down to 2.4 tires, but other than that, I quite enjoy putting in longer days on this bike.
@@outdoorsandiego Love your review and feedback.
Do you know any good bike parks in L.A. or are north of L.A.?
I just don't get to ride up there enough, but I know they are there
Nice video!
I appreciate the feedback
@@outdoorsandiego Right on!
If I camp at Whitney Portal, can I just hike up there? Or would I still need a permit?
As far as I know, you need a permit even for day hiking.
I actually live pretty close to this trail. Could you let me know where to park when I go?
I park at Bike Nerd for the shuttle or the road climb. There is a small lot as you start the climb, and more parking available near there
That's close to Ortega Hwy in the Santa Ana mountains? Do you always ride by yourself?
Right off Ortega Highway. I usually ride with groups, but since I have weekdays off, I can't Always find riding partners. Sometimes its just nice setting your own pace and riding solo.
@@outdoorsandiego I'm actually in that position that I don't know how to find riding partners. I'm in the San Fernando Valley and consider trails here or Rocky Peaks. Do you have any idea how I could find people to ride with?
@Jose-sy1je Few different ways. Look for group rides put on by local bike shops or mtb organizations. CZcamsrs will sometimes have get togethers as well. Find people on IG who ride in your area and chat them up. Same thing when you on the trails. Chat up the riders you see. Also, look for local trail building/repair days. It's another great way to meet people
@@outdoorsandiego How do I find trail building/repair days? I used to look on Meetup some years ago, but there is absolutely nothing on there now. Seems as if people have moved on from that platform. You are telling me to look on Instagram instead? Never used it, but I'll see if that works. I appreciate the advice!
@Jose-sy1je Usually, local groups will post on Instagram about trail days and you can message them to volunteer. Honestly, Instagram may be the best way if your local bike shops are not doing group rides. There are a lot of active groups and people who post from you area.
Where do you usually ride? Do you always ride by yourself?
I ride with groups most of the time, but I still enjoy a solo trip once in a while
It was great seeing you out there.
Always good seeing you. We need to get in a ride together soon
Thanks for the video! Planning to ride this for the first time tomorrow. Looks fast, fun and relatively low stress aside from those ruts up top.
Good description.
What HT u riding..trail ..enduro..got a check it out..miles ?
Trek Roscoe 8.
What is the first trail? The other 3 are quite recognizable. Always fun to spot new to me stuff at the local.
I just started mnt biking and I went through here today. I had to CZcams it to see if it was even possible with those big ass ruts and you make this look easy 😮💨
Because there is little maintenance going on due to the status of the trails at Calavera, the ruts just keep getting worse. Believe me, the ruts scare just like every mountain biker. Riding in So Cal, though, you get used to them
It is sd?
where is this?
Hello frllow hardtailer at la costa. Have you tried throwing this bike down Nascar?
A few times. I have also ridden it on my XC hardtail. Its actually really fun on the Roscoe. The bike handles the chunk really well.
Pretty decent rider.for an "old man" 👌 Roscoe 8 is definitely rowdy!
I'm still loving the bike. Everytime I bring it out, I'm amazed at how well it handles rough trails
Donde esta this trail. Looks sick
Oh no. I wish I had seen this before I signed up for a class. I’m already jumping but am having trouble committing to larger jump lines. This definitely isn’t the class I thought I signed up for.
It still helped with some solid fundamentals. I have been able to transfer a lot of what I learned into larger jumps. Really, the only difference hitting larger jumps is you are going faster, so your timing needs to be a little more dialed.
Where is this. I’m in sd
Great review mate. Ive been trying to decided between the Roscoe 8 and the Marin San Quentin 3. Thoughts?
The San Quentin looks really well speced and a good geometry. Marin bikes are usually a great deal for the price. With the Roscoes on sale, I think it's a pretty even call. Both are great bikes
watching you shred on this bike makes me think i don't need a full susp
It depends on where you are riding. Modern hardtails are so good that you can have a good time on all but the nastiest trails. Even then, I have survived some scary stuff on the Roscoe.
Thanks for helping me post fall.
Trek roscoe 9 the best
Had I waited for it to go on sale, I would have gone 9. Even so, the only upgrade I would consider is the fork. The 8 is pretty well spec'd
I definitely want to hit this place. Super spicy.
who needs full susp
Not on San Juan, for sure. Trails like this come alive on a hardtail
Hey 👋🏽! we’re heading that way the 17-20th and are looking to tide some trails. If you could show us around or guide us to some gnarly trail I would appreciate it!
I'd be happy to. Shoot me a message on Instagram, and I'd be happy to show you around
Check out Gnarmart Trail next time. It's to the left after the first uphill (49 secs in). I've never done it but looks crazy steep. Big rock slab.
Its next on the list. We did two laps on Test pilot and two on Wow, so we were a little cooked for Gnar.
Сould you please share a location of these trails?
I can't, but this one is not too hard to find with a little detective skills
Test pilot is a fully legal trail
How has your Roscoe held up since you uploaded this video? Any mods or noteworthy changes? Thanks for uploading 👍
Sorry for the delay in response. I do have an update video. The main change I made was going to a shorter stem and 35mm riser bars. If I had the money, I would switch out to a lyric or a fox 36 fork, but the 35 does a good enough job in most situations. I have beaten the bike up, and it's handled the abuse very well.
You make those trails look easy!
Nice!
Noiiice
Just hit this trail for the first time this past Friday. I’ll say you hit several more jumps than I did and went twice as fast 😂! Way faster and more technical than I anticipated and what a hike to the top…but man what a trail!
It's a very challenging line for sure. I finally made a top to bottom run with every feature, minus the 35 footer (on the full sus), and it takes a lot of focus to work in every jump.
