I think this is a great tool for everyone, except the macro specialists. Even my cheap Nikon 16-50mm kit lens get macro capabilities with these. I also think you use them a bit wrong. Such lenses are IMO best described as “reading glasses for your lens”. This means that each of the filters have different distances to the motive where they work best. (As a user of glasses myself, this is intuitive). The approach of a fixed position for the camera when changing filters is therefore a bit flawed, I think. Also, I find that the aperture needs to be smaller (larger f-number) to keep a useable depth of field as you move closer, since the +10 filter has a very shallow depth of field compared to the other filters with the same aperture. Bokeh is of course desirable in macro photography, too, but the correct aperture is rarely the lowest f-number if you want focus on the entire subject. Anyway, thanks for the nice video. I shoot with APS-C, so some of the experience may be coloured by that. And BTW, get a remote for your camera. I used to shoot product photographs as a freelance journalist some years ago, and a remote is extremely useable for almost all shots using a tripod.

I commend you for saying that was a HOW NOT TO video and that's an understatement. One: IR is a longer wavelength than visible light, so the focusing in visible light is never going to work FULL STOP! Now to the rest: In a visible light digital camera with the IR blocking filter over the sensor, and using a 720 nanometer lens filter, which still allows some of the visible spectrum through, the exposure times are MUCH higher than your 6 second option. Firstly, you acquired your exposure time in visible light at a very high ISO, and calculated exposure time in VISIBLE LIGHT at a lower ISO and based on a visible light reading. The differential in exposure is 10 stops or higher using a 720nm filter. Your grassy knoll even in that soft light should have appeared pale and nearly white, not dark as it was. Blue skies go anywhere from light red to dark red, and any green foliage, varying shades of pure white, to mid range white which of course yours did not. Using a filter on a standard camera will give you an overall redish tone to everything (requiring adjustments to WB and exposure among others in post) but that grass should not have been dark. On a bright sunny day that scene at f5.6 and an ISO of around 100 -200 would have required an exposure of about 30 seconds. At your choice of 400 in that low light and at the higher f-stop you used it would have required an exposure of at least 30 seconds or more.

  • @Narsuitus

I prefer black & white infrared photography over color. I have only shot digital infrared. I have not yet tried film infrared. I use 720nm or 950nm infrared filters. I use 52mm, 62mm, and 72mm infrared filters. I have never tried infrared with an SLR because it is too difficult viewing through the dark filter on the lens. I do not use infrared converted digital cameras. Cameras I have used include: Canon G11 and G15 digital compact cameras with fixed lens. Fuji X-Pro digital mirrorless with Fuji 23mm f/1.4 lens or Fuji 16mm f/1.4 lens. Leica M10 digital rangefinder with 35mm f/1.4 Zeiss Distagon lens.
