This is off the charts. 9/8 I think. As said b4, Larry Kimpel plays to Billy, allowing Billy freedom to move, such is his (Larry’s) pocket…❤
GMM brought me here, the music kept me here. Amazing bass
The duo headliners extraordinaire
👏🏾👏🏾
Cari giovani che ascoltate solo monnezza meditate e imparate
who is bass."fantastic🎉🎉
I have been watching this video for years. These guys are great. As far as the drumming, this stands out as the most powerful drumming I have ever seen.
👏🏾👏🏾
U can't help but love them so much 😢
Classic back in History,Count Basie himself, was thrown-off by Monks screwball off-pitched original 'birth of cool' blue notes, but when they all finaly caught what he's throwin' down,a fly-ball that was already out the park.and in the pocket.Wow!
Best song ever!!!
The bass player ain’t too shabby either!
I didn't even hear the guitar Ray Fuller or keyboards Brian Simpson! Too enthralled with every drum lick man!
Billy Cobhams drumming seems....impossible yet here it is! this song is unbelievable and George Duke is King. Great performance by all including Mr. Larry Kimpel!
All 3 are just amazing
I love Count Basie's reaction to Monk at 2:24 ! Me too!
3:54 That look of approval as they are thinking DAMN THIS IS FUN between musicians is priceless.
Wonderful complicity between these two geniuses.
Maestro billy cobham 🔥🎶💯👏👏
Super Human Sir Billy C
Cobham is a beast....literally, and in any other way.
Marihuana!!!!
Was this released on dvd orso?
Was blessed to study improv for a stretch at NYU with Malik in ‘77/‘78. Beautiful person. 🙏
Billy Cobham is and will always be the most underrated and underappreciated drummer since the 1970s. This man is responsible for so many things. Too many to name. Every time he collaborated with George Duke it was like pure magic. I wish those cats would have done more stuff together.
NEVER underrated!
It's funny because everyone it cuts to at this performance looks absolutely baffled by what's going on. The one black guy by the piano is going along with it and gets it but the saxophonist and the white guys are like "bro what is he doing we're live." Definitely a musician way ahead of his time though I mean you can see how this precedes modern jazz like Ornette Coleman which has abstracted melody to the point of near absurdity, and stuff like this would pave the way for free jazz like Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. My favorite part is when he cuts to Monk's feet, it shows that despite how unorthodox it is, Monk's playing and performance style is all intentional and authentic, because his steps and slides synch with his chords. I always like to imagine that Monk's improvisational style was based purely off of instinct and intuition, I can't believe that he would have prepared rhythms and harmonies like this before-hand. He probably played through melodies once and then made it a conscious effort to never play it the same way again.
That is amazing..... Billy !
Is there any scientist out there willing to estimate how many times Billy Cobham has hit a drum and cymbal in the course of his life?
🔥🔥🔥
Count Basie just chillin’.
Billy cobham my drum giru getting better by the minute. Balls and endless stamina. Never ending god bless you billy amen
George duke was a genius virtuoso keybord player god bless his soul in heaven amen
Billy was certainly at this time with Omar Akim the best drummers...! Then Bissonette came and take one stepe over....! Today.....i dont know who is playing that good.....i'm getting old and is faire away thé time where i wantex to be like them...! Spécial mention to Georges Duke who are definitly the master of progressif jazz but more about à incredible feeling....way over the reste....! It was à time where life meaning something !!
Yeah sure the musics good, but what’s that text actually say
Whenever I went to see Monk at the 5 Spot in New York and the Jazz Workshop in San Francisco, I would grab a seat from where I could see his feet. I loved the little dances he did when improvising.
I cried so hard when Mr. Duke passed
They is Grand Prix.
This Is Perfect... Fantastic !!!
Had dinner with this man while in Melbourne. Not only the worlds best drummer but a class act person. Thanks Billy for sharing the evening.
Billy was in the same Age Bracket as the Brecker’s - and was with the Band Dreams for two Columbia Lps around 1970. Band featured Will Lee/ DonGrolnick / Randy @Mike Brecker, John Abercrombie/Jeff Kent/ DonLubahn I was in that Business then and Billy lived in or near Mill Valley Ca he had a deal with CBS so I was able to talk to him in our Bookstore in the center of Town Really Great Guy Definitely Full Back Material! He was a true Leader in the Era of few Jazz / Rock / Fusion’s youth. Same with George Duke SF guy and we had just signed him at Epic I was the Only Person Left in the Resturaunt at the Myako Hotel where we were both staying. He walked over to my table and sat and had dinner with me. Again an amazing conversation he was so excited to get the CBS Deal and wanted to know what we had planned to propel his future. ? was always my answer I looked at him and told him he already had built a tremendous opportunity all he had to do was Work his Ass Off like our Office had to do every day. The pressure was so intense from Mgt of all Artists it was often miserable. The Artists were the true Geniuses that saved our jobs,
Hi Gumbo. In which year did this concert take place?
I don't know how many times I've posted this to Facebook over the years, but this is one of my go to jams. Billy Cobham is also my favorite drummer, and he still shreds after many decades! What a fantastic group of musicians.
2 giants of jazz and fusion ! They are by far in my list of most favorite musicians of all times.
One of the greatest Artists of all time..............!!
Never on Sunday song
Count Basie was just pissing him off, sitting right at the piano 😆
Billy Cobham DEFINITELY tapped into the ancestors during that solo.
Ciaoooo anni luce
Thelonious Monk didn't "play" the piano, per se - as I heard a narrator once say on a jazz documentary concerning him, rather he "attacked" it
Where was the head?
The right foot is special like no others. Still, the best drum set-arrangement to play, to hear, to see. to feel. WOW
