Olean Center Mall: A Beautiful Critically Endangered Dead Mall In Western New York
#deadmall #deadmalls
Today's visit is to the Olean Center Mall in Olean, NY. This mall opened in 1977 and was a joint development venture between Zamias Construction Company of Johnstown, PA and L' Alcove Castle Inc of Olean. L' Alcove Castle Inc was formerly headed by Guerino "Butch" Butchello who had developed numerous hospitality ventures in the region prior to the 1970s. Butch died in 1976 and wasn't able to see the grand opening of his downtown mall. As with a lot of these smaller town malls it did very well in the 1970s and 80s but when newer shopping developments came to life in the late 1990s the mall began to suffer. The last few years have unfortunately not been kind and the mall is down to three remaining active tenants inside.
Enjoy the tour.

We used to go here all the time as a kid as it was the closest mall to us. In one of the center areas was this big quare pit that was a fountain. At some point, they replaced it with a huge toy train set, with different scenery and tunnels, etc. Now it's filled in and is just carpet.

This is my local mall. It started dying once before, but Kohl's coming in 2012 rejuvenated it for a few years. Sadly, Bon-Ton's 2018 closure seems to have been the turning point where things spiraled downwards and then ownership changed in 2021 to a firm out of Rochester, NY. Really it is just the last 2 years that have been horrible, as it seems the new owner had no intentions of doing anything. I can't help but feel the tenants got tired of nothing happening. The owner allowing JCPenney to shutter their mall doors really cut traffic to the mall itself- which was then hurt even more when Kohl's followed. This in turn led to FYE, claire's, Cindy's Craft CO-OP and Bath & Body Works either closing or opting to relocate. Shoe Dept simply opted to focus on their other existing store instead of operating two different locations. There are major plans for the property in the near future that did recently get approved which entail the demolition of most of the Bon Ton space, adding an apartment complex and adding an entirely new entrance by the arcade. But we'll have to see if any of that actually happens.

I’ve lived in the Sac region for almost 20 years and never visited the Sunrise Mall. I’ve driven past it plenty of times, but never shopped there. The Roseville Galleria probably helped put a nail in the coffin of this old mall, similar to the outdoor mall in Sac that died and was remodeled.

The failing of malls and, like wise, many retailers in general is a product of technology and our own laziness. Ever since the rise of Amazon and more efficient home delivery, it basically discouraged people from stepping outside their homes and shopping at a store or mall. Why go out when you can turn on your phone or computer and order whatever you need or want and have it delivered the next day or even sometimes the same day. We as a society and own laziness destroyed these retail locations.

I grew up visiting the Antelope Valley mall when I was a kid. It's still thriving, despite losing Sears as an anchor, though the parking on that side is a barren wasteland. I feel like the various strip malls around my hometown deserve a mention, though. There's at least three I can think of with massive lots, but only one real business anyone shops at. Not to say the rest are empty spaces, most are filled with mom and pop shops, school stuff, or churches, but it's not something that'll draw in the crowds, like the grocery stores or restaurants in two of those strip malls. The third is sparsely populated, but I think most of it has been converted for office space, which is a shame. It's a real pretty place with its own distinct character, and I remember there being a bookshop on the second story.
