Far West Local Health District

The Far West Local Health District (LHD) has a vision “Excellence in Rural and Remote Health” and its mission is “Enabling health in our communities”.
The Far West LHD consists of eight public health facilities:
o Broken Hill Health Service
o Balranald Multipurpose Service
o Wilcannia Multipurpose Service
o Wentworth Health Service
o Ivanhoe Health Service
o Menindee Health Service
o Tibooburra Health Service
o White Cliffs Health Service.
The Far West LHD also includes the Family and Child Health Centre (Broken Hill) and Dareton Primary Care & Community Health Service, together with a number of other facilities including mental health and aged care facilities.
The Far West LHD is one of the smallest LHD’s in NSW. It serves a dispersed population of approximately 30,009 people and covers one of the largest geographical areas (194,949 square kilometres). It has a population with the highest proportion of Aboriginal people in the State.

Wentworth Health Service Redevelopment Cultural Ceremony 2023
Construction on the Wentworth Health Service Redevelopment is set to commence following cultural cleansing and sod turn ceremonies on site.
The recent cultural cleansing ceremony is an Aboriginal tradition used to regenerate Country and prepare the land as a safe and welcoming place. Led by Far West LHD with Aboriginal Elders and knowledge holders on Barkandji Country, the ceremony included a traditional smoking ceremony and dancers.
Thank you to the project’s Aboriginal Advisory Group for leading the event and for their contributions to the redevelopment.
