What and When to Eat Before Running and Racing
Our editors explain the science behind what you should eat before every sort of run, be it an easy recovery run, tempo workout, hard track session, long run or 5K, 10K or marathon (and even an ultramarathon). They then breakdown how to time your pre run or race fuelling, as well as their recommendations for the best foods to eat before a big run or goal race. They also share some of the biggest mistakes they've made with pre-run and pre-race fuelling.

    I’m actually pretty interested in these. I raced in a pair of Hoka Carbon X3s and got some good times over my training times. Buuuut I fell into the trap of training in them and ended up with IT band issues on both knees that I’m only just getting over months later. The lack of drop on these may be a perfect inbetween between my ASICS and Vibrams I train in and my Hokas.really interesting review, thanks 👍

    It's not the heat or the humidity, it's the dew point! Good information! My biggest suggestion is, get a coach!!!!!. My coach and I have been together for 2.5 years. I've gone from a 3:47 to a 3:08 marathoner in 6 races. Ran Boston in 2023 and got invited to the Marathon Majors AG World championships in Sydney this September. I'm 61!

    This is such a huge problem. As an ultra runner - the getting the calories wrong over a 15-30 hours will absolutely make the differ between finish or not. Recovering from caloric deficiency during the race is so hard, so this isn’t a minor problem. It also happens to be positioned as a premier product that costs more than cheaper options. I felt so duped. Thanks for your coverage.

    Had the nimbus 25 awhile now since late last year and almost ready to retire but unlike YT reviewers, I wasn’t ever impressed and felt like I wasted money, but I’m a ASICS superblasts fanboy, and just bought the Kayano to try, and I haven’t tried running in them yet, but my initial feel is I much prefer the rocker, and feel of the Kayano for me. Feels bouncier for me with a plusher upper, better lockdown, and much more comfy in every way and slightly better looking imo as well, less boat-looking. I’ve been having hamstring and hip issues and hope the stability elements will help me out maybe. Can’t wait to try them jogging tomorrow. The Kayano 30 feels like what I imagined the nimbus 25 would feel like for me, Pleasantly surprised.

  • @MukimukiRunner
    @MukimukiRunner Před 7 dny

    Very well said, from an ethical standpoint coaches should not accept sponsorships so that their athletes can be confident there is no financial bias behind the coach's recommendations. It's crazy how those two coaches Koop called out got away with not only promoting the product, saying they created the product to backpedaling to just being tastetesters and naming, to them not even using the product they promoted because they thought it was bad all because they are such positive and good people and their fans went and attacked Koop for calling them out. It's crazy how people disregard ethics.

    Very interesting video. Regarding the Gels. My friend will not go on a run without it. Mental dependency because of the marketing. So I got him for €40 the Libre 2 CGM. To cut a long story short.. His blood sugar goes up in a first 20 minute or so. Stays elevated for the first 2 hours then drops slowly down to normal level by the end of the run. He started eating a Gummy bear for 5 cents each before the run and a few along the way for fun.. No more expensive gels. Spoke to a trainer who said that for any run upto 2 hours no gels needed.

Also the Vongo v5 doesn't have the heel bounce that these 860s have. I am going to do 5 miles this evening with them and see how they go but so far not as good as my Vongo's.

    Great show, thanks. As for the DQ, the fact that he turned to taunt his competitor is what got him tossed. A celebration alone probably wouldn't have done it. Once you turn around and direct your "celebration" to a fellow athlete and it's almost a guarantee you're getting thrown out. Not saying it's right (though I have to admit, I hate when guys do that sort of garbage) but it is pretty predictable. Plus, he ran 45.7 almost turning fully around! I wonder what he would have run had he just driven through the line. 45.2? (Olympic qualifying standard) Probably not, but it would have been a lot closer. Again, great discussion, thanks.

    The volunteer in the blue shirt was clearly ready for him with 2 cups of water. The lady before that volunteer in the long sleeve white top was holding a cup out for him. It's his job to scoot over toward the water table even if he is the lead guy, safety for other runners and the race bikes means the volunteers need to stay off sides. And hear me out on this: did he go into the race with the knowledge that the volunteers weren't going to be ready for him and his water needs so better have dad available for hydration? No. This was a guy who had no plan of taking fluids at the aid stations. That was the reason he had his sherpa biking alongside! And for sure dad biking alongside helped. I run a lot faster when my friend bikes with me! DQ justified. Dude was well-supported by the race and volunteers he just chose not to take advantage of that support.

    Parkrun HQ and leadership have lost the plot if they think the sort of stats they have removed were in any way a barrier to new entrants. These stats were there but you had to look for them, it’s not as if they were blazed across the individual event sites. You get a text and email with your time, finishing position and age category. If you’re not interested in that kind of thing then that’s where it ends. If you are then go and look at the stats. Parkrun IS the most inclusive, friendly and supportive thing I’ve ever been involved with. That is not due to parkrun leadership (despite what they may think) it’s due to individuals who organise, volunteer and … of course… take part. All the stats did for me was to encourage me to try and improve where possible. Same for everyone else that I know who takes part. Classic case of distant management thinking they know best and taking their staff (in this case volunteers and participants) for granted. If you follow their warped logic to its conclusion then why bother timing it at all?
