AMTK CZ 5 & a WB Metra make stops at opposite platforms, CZ 6 & SW Chief 3 meet, SWC 4 w/ Metrolinks
The combined Amtrak/Metra station in Naperville, IL, 28 miles west of downtown Chicago has always been a popular railfan spot. The events of May 18, 2024 is one more of the many reasons why.
At 2:32pm, Amtrak California Zephyr 5, bound for Emeryville, CA arrives on M3 for its regularly scheduled station stop. However, it arrives on the south platform, which is usually used by eastbound trains going to Chicago Union Station.
At 2:35pm, a westbound Metra train bound for Aurora, IL arrives on M1 for its station stop. Shortly after, both trains begin to depart. However, Amtrak 5 stops just short of the West Naperville crossovers to let on a passenger that was on the north platform. Once the passenger boards, A5 continues west through the crossovers onto M2 for its trip west.
At 3:18pm, Amtrak California Zephyr 6 coming from Emeryville, CA arrives for its final discharge only station stop prior to Chicago Union Station. Two minutes later at 3:20pm. Southwest Chief 3 arrives for its first “boarding only” station stop. Both trains depart between 3:22-3:23pm.
At 7:03pm, a late Amtrak Southwest Chief 4 arrives for its final discharge only station stop. Three Los Angeles Metrolink coaches are in tow, which are going to a plant in the Milwaukee area for rehabilitation work. Once the coaches are rehabbed, they come back to Chicago via the Amtrak Hiawatha and return to Los Angeles on a SWC 3.

An 80 degree Friday in mid-May brought out all of the people and trains as well. This was one of the most prolific days of rail traffic that we’ve seen since before Christmas. We capture a good chunk of the activity during the afternoon into the rush hour.

We can never get tired of Downers Grove. There’s always all kinds of activity in this village along this part of the line. This is signified by two separate Metra trains making station stops that meet BNSF freight trains. We also get two separate red and gray BNSF Bonnets on two separate manifests.

On a warm and windy Saturday we made a short stop in Galesburg, IL to get a close up look at some of the yard moves that you see from the railcams located at the Discovery Depot Children’s Museum. Our time was not long but there were a few moves. There has been a weed spraying train in the siding by the station for several days and we saw a close up of it.

This is Westmont. However we caught the same 784 at Downers Grove Main one day earlier as a rear DPU on an eastbound. There is a short posted
How do you know the train id? (Z-CHCSSH)? I understand what the id means but when you’re out in the field railfanning how do you know? Is there a website?
Over time and with the use of the scanner, you begin to see and hear patterns as to when a particular train leaves the yard and its on the way. Once on the scanner we heard “St Paul” for the Z-CHCSTP once it left Cicero. Should there be a heritage engine anywhere on the train, the heritage units (HU) app is useful for seeing train symbols

It had been a few years since we last been to places like Mendota and Princeton. Since we were in Galesburg it made sense to make a few stops

Why did this have a second charger?
The train at the time might not have been able to be wye’d in the West Quincy yard between runs so it was stored in a siding track near the Quincy station

They later removed 183 and bnsf 5535 lead instead

Why do the metro link coaches look like that- aren’t they supposed to be in the Hondai rotem scheme?
Some of the coaches were built by Bombardier back in the 1990s

I like the Bombardier cars that Metrolink uses much better than the tin cans used by Metra.
