DIY Polisher, for Dopped Stones and Cabochons

Hello OUTSIDE Viewers! In this video, we show you how we made our own polisher for dopped stones. This is the second version we made; the first one had a leather pad glued in, but the leather broke away after soaking in the water. In this video we used a shag carpet, but a slightly lower, stiffer carpet might be better. Remember, fire is hot! Don't burn yourself or anything around you! Don't ov...

Make the hike up the mountain and dig up some massive pieces just went last weekend and was only up their about an hour due to heat and bees but I found a piece the size of both my hands put together
Maybe you mentioned it and i missed it but how many times do you think i can use one batched out bucket of iron out and water? The specimens im using are scrubbed and pretty clean. If you use a fresh bucket and pull the specimens in 2 to 6 hours, can i use that same bucket again for a second batch or even a rhird and fourth batch of specimens? Any advice or info you can suggest wiould be appreciated and i wont hold you to any end results. I understand its just a suggestion youre offering. Im a first time caller and I'll take your answer off the air lol. Reeeeespect
The IronOut begins to lose its efficacy as soon as it’s activated by the water. The warmer the temperature, the faster it goes. In our experience, we’ve gotten 2 soakings of 3 hours from one mix before, but disposed of it after, so we can’t speak on anything more. And of course, your results will most likely vary!
I respect your process and you can believe me when I say I will replicate and experiment with your creative process. Now, to be the douchebag viewer that needs to sound important lol, I'm concerned about yhe speed your polishing at. It's quite fast. It also seems like a waste of expensive , quality cerium. Unless I was to do a full day just dopping and polishing, it's kinda of not worth all that for one specimen. If I may risk being more of a jerk, and I'm really not a jerk, just a straight to the point kinda person, May I suggest adding some glycol and/or glycerin to your water/cerium batch. Maybe even a little xanath gum. It will help thicken and suspend that cerium as well as more evenly coat your specimen as well as keep temperatures regulated, especially when using carpet/wull as your applicator. It's a very aggressive applicator. I've had some pretty good results using a diamond powder grit sequence on hook and loop finishing car foam applicators that are attached to my dremel versa. The versa only goes one speed and needs a recharge after an hour of use, but the speed seems to be just right to get the job done quickly and not launch anything out the garage window....again lol....but if you would like I found a great recipe to make an excellent slurry using only RV antifreeze, glycol, a little xanath gum for a neutral slurry that yields about a cup or two. You can then take as much as you need into a separate vessel and add whatever amount of medium you wish , diamond powder, cerium l, aluminum oxide, whatever. But what I do know for sure , is that trying to get just water and cerium oxide to coagulate into anything that represents a slurry seems nearly impossible even just a little bit of glycol without that other crap is enough to give it some body I have a better results anyway sorry for being a know-it-all you guys are awesome and I appreciate your Iron out videos. which have been super helpful rejogging my memory of how to do that. be well. To The ancient, to the old, and to the new...god speed
Thanks for commenting! We’ve never had an issue with the speed, as long as there’s enough water to keep the agate wet. As to the amount of cerium used for one cabochon, we don’t remove the mixture from the container, it stays in there until we polish more stones. The water may evaporate but we just add a little more and it’s fine. The only thing I would change about the design, is short shag carpet instead of the longer stuff we did use.
OH MY GOSH! That’s gorgeous! A have a small Ellensburg blue agate with a few bands but it’s not spectacular like this!
Thanks! It was a shocking find!
Great video! What lure (green/yellow colored) are you guys using exactly? Thanks.
They named the agate after the town!
Yes we know. It was a joke.
I'm researching rolling mills and found your video. I'd love to know the make/model of that mill. Please.
Hello, thanks for watching! This mill is the Pepetools 90mm combination rolling mill, with ductile frame. Pretty happy with it! The independence it creates is fantastic!
Another CZcams video on Washington and the Jade found there and where it's found in the state. White jade was brought up as well!
Your videos are gonna cost me! I went to the HD after watching this and picked up some 4" black PVC and plexiglass to make a "finder tube" today. Also putting some high power white LEDs on the side just in case. DIY for the win, Chris!
That’s the spirit! Andrew found a really nice chunk of jasper using the bucket! Have fun Outside!!!
Now I want to go looking for Ellensburg blue. However that would require me driving to... ELLENSBURG!
That’s always the problem!
This video is awesome. So informative for us uninitiated. I am now on the watch for those damned little Irish leprechauns!
Haha! 🍀 I hope it brings you luck!
GO MARINERS!!!
Haha yup!
GO MARINERS !!!! Great vid :)
Thanks!
I love this idea, but that solar bag has really bad reviews on Amazon.
Well, it heats the water up really warm and sprays it out when I need it, so I’m happy with it!
Have you ever worked the Hardrock claim in First Creek?
I was just there ! Love First Creek !
'Promo sm'
Btw! If they didn’t mention it, some crystals have a cool oxide coating on them, orange, black, red etc. if you put that in the color will also come off
I have SO many of these that I never knew what they were. I thought they were just cool and shiny and have collected them for years. I legit just looked it up today
When I do this, I'm going to use a full faced gas mask and I'm gonna do it outside.😊
Certainly wouldn’t hurt! Be safe!
Hello
What’s that red stuff on the hooks
Hi, that’s some fishing yarn for visible attraction!
How do you value a piece like that ?
Haha well for smaller pieces of untumbled rough the price ranges from about $10-$20 per gram depending on color and quality. For a large piece like this, it’s a rarer specimen and could be higher. But I don’t plan on selling it or cutting it up!
Great find! If you dont mind me asking, where did you guys decode to go roughly? Recently got into rockhounding. Im about an hour outside of rock n tamahawk ranch but saw they just now permanently closed. Dont need to be specific, just courious. Thinking about looking at property maps and choose a spot nearby. Any help appreciated, thank you!
The area this piece was found at is private, and I won’t draw attention to it. But if you email or contact us through Facebook messenger, I will give you a public location that I’ve found blues at.
Chris or Andrew, I just joined spokane rock rollers club and everyone is telling me to reach out to you. I got a collection of rock and was told there was blues in it. Of course everyone is skeptical as am I but would like more info on it. Also I was told to find you guys to possibly hunt for blues is that an option?
Contact us through email or Facebook messenger, and we’ll see if we can help you!
Use it for storage of water. Jay bharat.
cant stick your fingers in the gills you guys are going to kill those poor fish.
We’re very aware of that. However if we’re going to eat a fish it doesn’t matter how it’s held, as long as it’s dispatched quickly and with respect.
Badass!
Yeah man!!
Looks more like you removed the band of color which was showing through the clear part and now you're left with just the clear part.
One could think that, but they’d be wrong.
One of my favorite shows
Yeah pretty cool!
The petrified wood is from the Puget Group, but you were close by saying Northcraft. I go to that place multiple times each year. A favorite place for me!
Interesting that you say this. When I was researching the petrified wood on the Carbon River, I found a publication from the WA DNR that states the petrified wood on the Carbon River and South Prairie Creek came from the Northcraft Formation. The publication further discusses rocks from Mount Rainier, Tertiary igneous bedrock from the Cascades, and sandstones, shales, and coal fragments from the Puget Group, being present there as well. The publication is “Roadside Geology of Mount Rainier National Park and Vicinity”, by Patrick T. Pringle et al., 2008. The pertinent section is titled “Leg J: Approach to the Carbon River area-Through Orting and South Prairie Creek valley via State Route 162”, page 144. Thanks for commenting.
@@chrisandrewoutside1560 thanks for correcting me on this matter. I didn’t know the Northcraft had abundant abundant petrified wood, and of course Pat is a great reference to the area.

Can you cut the blue part with the lapidary trim saw and then polish it with a vibratory tumbler or you need a cabbing machine in order to polish it without taking the blue off?
You can cut and tumble, but tumbling will remove the blue too, as well as other parts. My opinion is to make sure you have it cut as close to the shape you want, and then closely monitor the coarse grit tumbling so it doesn’t remove too much agate, before moving on to the finer grits to polish.
Nice fish out there. Can I ask why you prefer the slinky weight over the bottom walker?
I like to run heavier weight than most, and since I make the slinkies I can control the weight. And even though there’s hardly any place to snag up in Potholes, the slinkies rarely get stuck.
How wonderful, I love it!
I would love to buy some Ellensburg Blue jewelry.
We’re going to be auctioning real Ellensburg Blue jewelry on “The Ellensburg Blue” Facebook group in the next week or two. It’s a private group but people can join after answering some questions and agreeing to the rules. Join us!

Curious of the actual point (spit) was above water or below? Was there in Jan at low tide and most of the point was all under water!
The point was actually under water still. Last time I went it was above.
@@chrisandrewoutside1560When was the last time you went (month & yr)? I'm trying to determine if it being underwater is a permanent thing or not. Thanks!
It’s been a several years before the trip we videoed, maybe Feb of 2019. But I do know that bar has been known to shift, shrink, and grow with the currents, tides, and storms acting on it.
Love this video!!!!
As a Gemologist I have to think the lower thermal conductivity is probably related to the Zirconium in the agate. Zirconium melting at around 3,371 F I would think would contribute to this being a very refractory metal.
Thanks for commenting!
Very informative, I have a few blue agates that look exactly like the specimen's you showed in your video. i dug a couple from Red top mountain. And a nice one came from the Tomahawk ranch.
So much fun to hunt for! We’d love to see your finds some day!
