Our channel can help you with gear ideas and trip ideas to lower your base weight and help you be successful and safe and to have fun as a family. Chris and I have many decades of combined experience Skiing, climbing, and mountaineering in the back country. We had our kids late and had to slow down to have a be with the kids. Thank you hiking and filming this obstacle course, i mean trail (!) for us so we never after to 🤣 Honestly though, another great video. Amazing views but good lord those ladders and rotten boardwalks...idk if I'll ever actually want to do this one myself. Kudos to you both as parents for navigating this adventure and to both the kiddos for smiling throughout!! They will remember it forever I'm sure ❤
@@lolobeans awe thanks so much
Nice video. One thing to mention about using the apple air tags as a location device in remote areas- they do not function well in this setting. Once the tag is out of bluetooth range for your phone (which would be 30-50ft, so visual distance), it relies on connecting to other people’s apple devices that are blue tooth enabled. If there aren’t any people with apple devices around and the air tag is out of range of your phone, you can’t track it. It does not have an active GPS signal like Garmin in reach or other devices made for tracking in the back country. Pretty much, if your child or pet can’t hear you yelling for them, you aren’t going to track them via an AirTag in the woods. It could possibly work if you stumble within a short distance of the AirTag and you are there long enough to connect to it, but in no way would I rely upon it for finding someone in the woods
Yes, all true. Thanks for the comment
Love it!
I had to delete part 2 and redo it cause there was some weird beeping in the middle so your comment got deleted. Sorry about that.
Love it! Think my favourite part is the raw & honest child & parent communication when doing something like this! When I did this with my 2 girls a few years ago I fell from the top of the second ladder going down to Thrasher. Ass over tea-kettle bouncing beside the ladders all the way to the bottom. Not sure how many times I hit the ground but thankfully it was mostly my pack that hit the ground, landed on my face though. Got up right away as I knew my kids had just seen it. Was able to finish.
@@darchgirladventures4417 thank you :)
If your in the USA 90% of the time you should be using a non ultralight tent like a Hilleberg black or red label. Our country is made up of rather extreme climates with lots of mountains with high winds, or land that gets hurricanes, blizzards, or monsoons quickly. Only in very specific times of the year in a very small temperate parts of the USA will ultralight tents cut it. Just get a higher end more bigger heavy duty tent and split it up between yourself and your spouse/partner. That way you get the same weight as an ultralight tent each but the benefits of the more sturdy tent.
Thanks for the comment. I am actually Canadian and our climates here are even worse :) I agree with you to a certain extent. Some ultralight tents of different design and material work really well in bad weather like the Durston X-Mid that was made to weather our Great divide Trail. This Nemo Hornet tent and many of the same design is definitely not made for anything other than a slight breeze. So this particular design, I agree with you.
Very cool video! Definitely on our TO DO list 😁
Thank you!

If you get a chance to do it it’s a great trail! It definitely changes for the worst if it’s raining though. We got really lucky with the weather.

We were too!
Wow! Amazing video. And awesome music in the background too 💯🤍

Great video!!! This trail looks spectacular and so unique. Those ladders with a heavy pack though...ngl i would have cried when i saw the ladder to the toilet after finally getting to camp!!
Oh ya I about did. Every single toilet in every single campground had a ladder and to make matters worse there was always a bunch of logs to clamber over to get there. Bathroom logsticle course.
That was amazing!! Loved every minute!! Snakes and ladders comes to mind and, yes, Pirates!! Some of those ladders though!! Well done again on capturing another grand adventure!!
Wow! Fantastic post. Thanks for sharing 💯
Also those Handfuels are both delicious, healthy and really great calories per ounce! I love them.
@@lolobeans they are really tasty. Will definitely bring them again.
Full props for being able to organize backpacking meals for a week for a whole family! It's hard enough to do just for oneself! The Peak Refuel Pesto Pasta is amazing, he'll love it I'm sure. It's remarkable how much less space those dinners take up in a freezer bag (they do fine with near boiling water though in my experience though it gets hot to hold of course so good call on the cozies)! Do the kids clean up the pots from the Knorr Sides? 😜 (also is this a concern at all in grizzly country?)
Awe thanks. It’s lots of work! We just boil some water and clean the pots and put them in the bear bin with the food :)
Not sure if you're in the Edmonton area, but if you are, we could meet up and I could lend you a zenbivy setup to try out if you wanted to. They're pricey, but unlike anything else out there.. They are definitely everything They're cracked up to be. I don't see myself ever going back to just using a quilt on the ground. The new UL pad is very comfortable, I've been extremely happy with it to this point. I'd say its a bit more comfy then my Nemo Tensor, but I'm not sure if thats because I went with the wide zenbivy pad, and have the mummy shaped nemo tensor.
Thanks so much for the offer, unfortunately I’m actually not in Edmonton very often. I live in Calgary. I’ve been thinking about getting that UL pad cause my kid says she needs a thicker pad. They have been sold out for a while though.
I want one of these so bad!
It’s a great tent!
@@alpineearth with the growing family, I'll be upgrading to a 4p tent pretty soon. May have to bite the bullet and pick up another pricey piece of gear
@@MattyOutdoors it’s really nice to have everyone in one tent. The other option is the hyperlite 4 person. It’s a lot lighter but pricier. There is a nice Tarptent one as well but I have not tried it myself yet. I would really like to try the hyperlite.

I'm doing this trip this weekend! Any tips?
Lots of tips in the video but basically pack light and don’t carry lots of water because there are rivers the whole way there. Camping is all along the lake so grab a good spot before the campground. The campground is not right on the lake :) take an ursack bag or bear canister if you camp halfway along the lake or the hike to the bear lockers is a long way. Get a fishing licence and fry fish if like fish. The fishing there is fantastic.
I have not seen a lightdr tent fir 3-4 ppl either. Our Salt Creek 3 barely fits 2 plus a dog. Thanks for the review. Collest family ever!

Groundbirdgear had to stop taking orders due to such high demand and not being able to keep up as they were a one gal show. Incredible gear, so hopefully they come back! Good reviews, I'm looking at the palisades pack for my 3 yr old lab as we're planning a 2025 AT thruhike, but the lack of waterproofing is such a turnoff! Her gear is also light, but if the pack gets drenched and heavy then I'll have to take the weight penalty and cary her gear bags. Certainly not ideal, especially factoring in how much it will stink after 5-6 months of daily use. Seems like an easy material fix for the retail price of $160CA! Its the best we can find though. :(
@@nox1994 ya I am hoping to do a colab to build something, we will see, cause everything out there is sub par

Hello, im planning to do a big walk across europe on fall and im on the market for a lightweight backpack. Ive been trying to find USWE Hajker reviews but they are quite limited (except a big sponsored video of a lady doing the camino de santiago). Do you think this backpack could be worth it for someone carrying about 22lbs for hiking and maybe some trail running? Thanks.
I mean yeah it would work but it’s heavier that other lighter packs and the pockets are kinda difficult to work with if you want to keep moving and not be annoyed. It’s definitely stable enough for running but there are better packs for that IMO like the montane packs. Check them out in my videos. The other one I have ran in before is the mountainsmith Zerk 40. I love that pack.
Can it travel on a belt horizonally. Or will it swing straight up and down?
@@jesseh4907 straight up and down
Interesting that you can't afford it when you have a very expensive jacket, watch, macbook, marshall...
And that is exactly why I can’t afford it :) and the Marshall is a fridge lol
My wife and I invested in the 10F convertible system which was extreme for conditions we just discovered we preferred to hike in. Now we're looking into the 25F ultralight iteration since we were so enamored by the 10, but I'm skeptical about the sewn in foot box. Part of the appeal of the convertible is having the option to splay it out like a blanket from home. Sheesh though, two grand for an all year round system causes some apprehension. It's my wife's fault, I automatically have to purchase doubles of whatever gear I'm interested in. The material is buttery soft as advertised though.
This happens! I did the opposite, bought a 20 degree quilt and realized I needed a 10 cause I sleep really cold in the fall and spring :)
I also can't afford this. I'm still looking into an EE quilt, though their prices have gone up too. I've never quilted before, and I'm a bit nervous to drop this much money on one.
I have 4 UGQ bandit quilts. I highly recommend them. You definitely would not regret that purchase. It’s best to save and buy what you really want vs a cheap version you will need to replace.
Just remember to make sure you don’t buy the ‘slim’ version for width
Thank you for your nice review. I Planning to get one but my Torse is 18.9inch what size should i need to buy M or L? thankyou
I am 18.5 inches by measuring like the video on the REI website and I bought a medium and it fits me perfect.
Thx

Great video! Knives are an important part of a kit. I don't have a neck knife but can see where it could work well for some. I do carry a small leatherman as well as a Swiss army pocket knife, not sure what one but it was directly from Switzerland as a gift.😁
Awesome. A leatherman is very useful. I used to carry one backpacking but found it was overkill for summer, but as a survival tool if you needed to set snares or need to fix a broken ski they are very very good so I carry one in winter and a tiny one in my bike repair kit when I mountain bike. Mostly for the pliers and screwdriver. I have a Swiss Army knife as well but find my leather-man is better but heavier. You can get Swiss Army knives with more features than mine has though.
I started camping in elementary school and never stopped. From quinzees to tarps to tents on pads or browse beds, I would argue the browse bed when done well is the best of those. However, about 15 years ago in my early 30s I found hammocks and I pretty much never slept on the ground again. My hammock camping setup was the same weight as my tent setup and the comfort isn't even close. I use a bridge hammock with a pad which does add extra weight but is far more versatile since I often end up above the tree line and my hammock acts as a bug bivy until I can get back down in the trees. I under-inflate my pad and it is like sinking into a cloud. While I get what they're trying to do with the Zenbivy, I don't think it solves any real issue that hasn't already fixed for me as I don't really have draft issues as I'm not a really active sleeper. I have spent a small fortune chasing the light and comfortable thing and after almost four decades of camping, my hammock setup is more versatile and more comfortable than anything else. In torrential rains on the West coast, instead of people hiding in tents I end up with people congregating under my tarp as there is enough room for 8-10 people to visit and stay dry. Plus, I never have to worry about my gear getting wet from the ground as it's always hanging from my suspension. And the mom brain thing is legit, it's well studied that if your kids are around it'll be harder to relax because you'll be wanting to keep them safe.
Sounds like you have a great setup. Been thinking of trying a hammock myself to keep my dogs under me.
Try getting it in Canada with $100 in shipping and 130% exchange….
Oh I hear ya. I am in Canada :)
Always bring a knife, mine is the victorinox compact so maybe it isn’t considered a knife. I use it every time backpacking, not as much day hiking but it still comes with me. Used to use the leatherman squirt, but wanted a longer blade on the knife. My kids both carry the victorinox classic. IMO ultralight should still mean self sufficient. If I have had to borrow something, I change up my kit to ensure that use case covered next time.
That is a great knife. I have one as well. Had it since I was knee high.
Just buy a high quality mummy bag if one doesn’t like drafts.
Bit heavier though but yeah for sure
I have the zenbivy light bed, love it. Just a little heavier, and actually cheaper than quilt sets from other sources such as UGQ or Enlightened Equipment.
Can I ask what campsite # is that?
Which one? He one by T falls is named after it and the one we went to was laughing falls campground.
@alpineearth The one at takakkaw falls. Do you happen to remember the campsite number by chance?
No I don’t I’m sorry. You can’t book the exact campsite anyway so it won’t help.
Can’t wait to get mine
It’s a really nice pack. I am sure you will love it.
I made some severely costly errors in my early gear procurement days. I had zero concept of weight so I ignorantly purchased a Hilleberg Keron 14lbs $1,400 expedition tent intended for polar excursions. I live in Virginia. Forehead slap. That and an almost 3lbs S2S comfort plus sleeping pad. I think I still might have a pack strap impression etched into my shoulders from my first attempt.
Well I think my first 4 season tent was 6 pounds but 14 is a lot. Wow! We have all bought crazy things over the years. When I first started backpacking for caving and peak bagging as a ten and 20 something, I have one of those super heavy Coleman stoves stores in a metal coffee canister and an army sleeping bag that probably weighed at least 5 pounds.
Yeah I gotta respectfully disagree on the pump style filter. Maybe that particular brand you have is jankety but the MSR Guardian just expedites my filtering time and not to mention it saves me being hunched over at a creek shore exerting all my physical might for 20 minutes squeezing through a Sawyer. Plus they're so prone to clogging if you aren't filtering pristine water. The ability to toss a tube into a creek from the safety of dry ground is a selling point for me as well as the peace of mind in knowing Im filtering out any potential viruses in the water which the squeeze styles aren't noted for.
Hey, if you love it, use it. I just found it took way longer to filter with it. I don’t use a sawyer, I use the Salomon filter. It’s amazing.
Where did you get that packstrap insta360 selfie stick holder I didn't see it your list in the description. I've scoured Amazon and 360's site and I can't find it anywhere
store.insta360.com/product/magnetic-selfie-stick-holster
@@alpineearth Very kind thank you.
@@danieldeviers9934 no worries. I should have put a link to it below the video.
@@alpineearth I think you did. The magnetic term threw me off. I thought it clipped into place.
Been my exact thoughts as well. It’s such a limited market with so much money to be made it confuses me how no one has really caught on. Such a shame about groundbird and how she just stopped posting and ignores everyone. I don’t believe she owns the patent on the harness so may take some of the design and build one. Maybe start a business with gear the backpackers actually want and need
Please do and then I don’t have to make anything. Sewing is not my forte.
