    I love gacha games. Though THE gacha game I want to make is pay-to-lose. If you've played Custom Robo(GC), in the story they describe the Parts Generator. It doesn't work like that as each part is prescripted with no randomness, but that is the core inspiration to my system. Pay to lose? Let's simplify this. Imagine Currency X, and 5 guns take 10 X which can only be gained from pvp. You had 11, and got the first gun by random with 1 left. In the store, there's a sale of 100 Gold Currency to get exclusive gold skins for those 5 guns. You buy it, nothing seems to happen. But when you get 10 more X, instead of a 4 in 4 chance of a mechanically new gun, you now have a 8 in 9 chance, because 5 copies cost 10 X and 10 Gold. If you get a mechanically new gun, your next chance with be 6 in 8 instead of 3 in 3. Assuming you get lucky, then goes to 4 in 7 instead of 2 in 2. BUT, The store just got Onix, Silver, and Ruby currencies. So you buy them. Now you have 10 in 22 instead of 4 in 7, or the original 2 in 2, of getting a new mechanical option, assuming you got the mechanical advantage every single pull. The actual system is waaaaaay more complicated than this. Think there's like 6 and 17 base currencies from pvp and some pve, with the 17 needing 2 of the 6 respectively to fain after battle, and other pvp exclusive currencies, and many pve and event currencies. Shop currencies can also be won from pvo, just slowly, if the opponent has an equipment with that currency, as with many others. But the example sums it up. Buy one shop Currency, and DOUBLE the work you need for each gun until you run out. Currencies owned are hidden, and when you go to [[basically Parts Generator]], it will generate a random part if possible that you'd be able to purchase, and keep going till you run out. Each unique gun can only be bought once, and cannot be lost, but skins like from shop currencies count as separate guns, at least halving the chance of getting whatever it is you want. If you have 1001 dragon Currency, 160 Meteor, and only one gun left to buy at 900 dragon and 150 Meteor, it'd be 100%. IF you buy a new shop Currency, then that is one, and EVERY part you already have but not in that color has a chance to, potentially dropping it below 0.1%. If it generates a part that uses 102+ dragon or 11+ Meteor, that is a 0%, and it'll keep generating parts until you don't have enough Currency for even the 10 dragon and 10 Meteor Parts. There will be a warning.

    So I barely remembered this from when I was a kid play on N64. And when I tried to remember it or bring it up I thought it was like just a vivid dream wasn't even sure if this game was real or in my head and then saw a clip on Tik Tok and got excited . I found it on Steam for like $11 on the sale played for like a solid 2 or 3 weeks and finished the game 99% trophies.

    That Alice and Bob example at 17:48 is what's misguided about matchmaking systems imo. I don't want "equal skill" of a team of 3 Alices and 2 Bobs, I want matches where 5 Bobs play vs 5 Bobs and 5 Alices play vs 5 Alices.

    • @Game-wisdom
      @Game-wisdom Před 6 dny

      Unfortunately, the chance of finding a competitive game that you can log on at any time, anywhere in the world, and have everyone perfectly matched together at the same skill level is very difficult outside of the extreme ends -- having all new or lower levels play, or all high/competitive levels play. And if a game doesn't provide the means for people to learn the game and grow, then the high-level play will become more and more segmented as evidenced by the churn rates for most competitive-focused multiplayer titles.

    • @HighLanderPonyYT
      @HighLanderPonyYT Před 6 dny

    And then there is "Mobile legend bang bang". 1st 100 or so games reasonable if not easy road matchmaking, even if you have 85+% winrate, but if you have 1000 or 2000+ games - who cares, sunk cost fallacy will keep you here, so carry these super bad players. Even if you play in the same league during the same time day, I use the same heroes, have the same skill, but with my main getting around 50%, while smurf 80+%, if not near 90%.

    Pressing R to use a Boost Point in Octopath Traveler feels very good. With each press, it amplifies the intensity of the ability, but also chimes with audio/visuals and voice-overs. The cherry on top comes when you triple-boost an ability or attack, then the character says a unique voice-line, usually with great intensity. For a turn-based JRPG, it feels very good (even more so in Octopath II, where they do cool things with the camera angles to make fully booster skills very extra epic).

    "Nobody cares that you beat [Fromsoft Game]" ist something some hardcore Souls fans need to hear more often. Put your ego aside and let people adjust their play experience to fit their general experience, (dis-)ability and life situation. Beating a Souls game has never meant anything and never will beyond the mere fact that you played the game until the credits rolled and hopefully found the journey delightful.

    But, Josh, if all the fans of rogue like genre like this or dont mind this, then whats the problem, why do I care about others?

    Hey there from the year 2024, someone made one using OoT as the base. Turns out it’s great. Definitely way better than Bloodnite.

    The best TV show to understand Meta-Progression is definitely How I Met Your Mother. The best painting to understand RTS would be of course Liberty Leading The People And for a 2D platform I’d pick a french indie film titled B13 (seriously tho, look it up) I think, as a game designer, whenever I’m working on a title, I should become an expert on that genre. Playing games, both for fun and analytically, is crucial to grow as a game designer. If I don’t enjoy playing games, how would I know how to make a game enjoyable? If I don’t study how games work, how would I make sensible mechanics and tune my design? Good video Josh.

    Lotsa filler talk. LoL succs, WoW succs. :P That detailed talk about wards when I bet they just "borrowed" the design from Dawngate (rip).

    Love this game and the design, so much that I am making my own version in python. But this video is super dry, had to give up after 15 minutes or go to sleep.

    I have like over 15 hours and only just now realized you can use the bubble wand twice, as in jumping off your first bubble and onto your next bubble. I'd been using the frisbee jump onto bubble to extend my jump for hours until I saw another person using the B. wand for higher jumping. This is kind of my issue with the game, a lot of the tools that they give you (in my opinion maybe a few too many) not only aren't always explained how many uses they have, but have techniques that the game has no way of actually showing to you unless you make the mistake of trying it by *accident* and that's just not my thing. Part of the reason I quit right after the first fake-out credit roll is that the map layout is absolutely awful, or at least mediocre enough that the thought of going back through many of them (with the item you get from the candles all being lit) was not only daunting, but straight up dull. Regardless of the warp room, and flute melodies, I do not like the way the general areas interconnect. I find it very stifling as well as restrictive when half the rooms are superfluous after you've beaten (most of) the puzzles in them. The game becomes dull because you are hunting for esoteric solutions to complete puzzles that are entirely optional and are merely there for the sake of being there (as the developer basically put it). What really gets my goat is the sheer amount of them that are totally impossible to solve on your own (check out the floor is lava wrong warp challenge if you want to see what I'm talking about). Not only are they vague as well as abstractly obtuse, but are made more difficult by the complexity and length or leaps of logic involved in nearly all of the rabbit secrets. A barcode? Really? An origami print out? A tamagotchi step counter? Some of these are just so unbelievable that when I finally looked at the (egg puzzle room) I lost it. I totally lost it. Who would even know what any of that means unless the actual developer or their buddies on discord were talking to each other about it? It could've been a fun little 3-4 hour puzzle game, but they went for this meta beyond pixel hunting crap on top of it having some hilarious precision jumps necessary for some of the more advanced secrets. I probably nearly threw my Dualshock out of a window a few times from very punishing and repetitive segments or platforming. I can count the number of times I just stopped playing whenever it came to any of the flute playing, it was clearly not designed for an analog stick input as it was a constant struggle to avoid NOT accidentally playing two inputs at once. It also doesn't like the d-pad moving diagonally, and counts against the correct input direction if it sees to much of down than left instead of "proper" diagonal-ese. No clue why it is so hard to pull off. Who is this game for though? Completion obsessed indie pixel art fans or people who beat Fantastic Dizzy without a guide. The only channel that vehemently defends it is a dude with 100 hours on one save file. A hundred hours? Really? Theirs also no plot, which is a huge no-no for how much of a cumbersome time investment it is. If you were seriously hunting for achievements or some real post-game stuff, you will never get all of them because some require deep intrinsic knowledge about how everything in Animal is displayed and communicated to players. Virtually impossible to know kind of things that only developers of the game would know. That's why the marketing is so ostentatious, as if anything besides worth-of-mouth could ever convince people to play it, when you are likely forced to look up something *someone has found already.* Such a betrayal of "single-player" game design, why not make it an online multiplayer throw-back point-and-click adventure then? If you're going to go that far with everything. I peaced-out after finding all the eggs, a couple of rabbits and everything except the upgraded wand. I just didn't care to go back to check out random stuff in the backgrounds of EVERY room- sorry!

      Just set your dimension from "3" to "2" in your engine of choice and hit compile, it also works going from 2D to 3D.

    Looks like an interesting game concept. The main ship overview looks really cool with the floating characters. But I'm not too sure about the minesweep minigame.
