I like how theres people who think Yoshi island or Smb 2 are not mainline yet you look at Zelda and practically all the games are considered mainline, despite having quite varied styles (just like mario) for example I don't rhink anyone is going aroon saying Zelda 2 isn't part of the Zelda series. Or Majaora's mask.

I feel like the climbing boots the ice climbers are depicted wearing could have worked better, but the lack of detail on their original sprites not showing them to specifically be climbing boots might mean the eggplant fits better anyway.

My definition of a mainline super Mario game: a game released on a Nintendo console that sees Mario Jumpman Mario as a prominently playable character with gameplay that is purely focused on 2D or 3D platforming with no addition of RPG or other spin off game mechanics. Keep in mind it is possible for Mario games that don’t meet this definition of mainline to still be canon to the mainline games lore wise. I do believe that there are spinoffs with cannon lore such as the Luigi’s mansion franchise and the Yoshi’s island games. If a game is a remake or re-release I would consider an entry in the mainline series, but not a distinct entry. As for Bowser’s Fury I consider it to be an expansion pack for 3D World. A mainline entry because of it presenting unique platformer challenges, a unique, setting and plot, but not a distinct entry due to it ultimately being built off 3D World.

I think when people talk about mainline it's like when we talk about mainline protestants. it's basically all vibes. to me Super Mario Bros, New Super Mario bros, Super Mario World, Galaxy, Land, and Sunshine are all different series. Wonder does seem interesting as maybe a new legacy sequal to the original super mario bros, but it might end up being the first installment in a new series actually

People considered Mario Kart and the RPGs mainline??? I'm a massive Mario RPG evangelist and they have more interesting lore and worldbuilding than any other games in the franchise, but at least I know they're still spinoffs! A robust, beloved subseries is still a subseries.

While the sweater thing is funny, I'd argue that it's about as much of a video game as a wiki article for a game. Like whenever i get into a new fromsoft or monster hunter game I'm pulling up the Fextralife wiki to figure out where to get some weapons and materials. It's a piece of interactive software thats assisting me in entertainment, but i wouldnt call the wiki article a video game, and i feel like a glorified instruction manual on how to knit a sweater falls a lot more accurately into whatever category those articles do
