After watching your review I had to pick up my own copy of this release. The encode and picture are definitely better. The old Lionsgate Blu-ray is a 3.5 to a 4 out of five where the new Imprint one is at least a 4.25 to a 4.5 out of five in terms of picture quality. Thanks for your awesome review. Most people refuse to even buy physical media now. If they buy it's often whatever is cheaper they drew a line in the sand with cost. Inflation hasn't helped anything. It's why DVD is still here. Anything better is left to the hobbyist.

Apparently there isn't gunna be a standard release not from Imprint anyway someone on an FB 4K group emailed them and was told there are no plans for a standard release of Neverending Story

It's the industry's fault it still exists. They should've stopped releasing new titles on DVD. I bet most people buying DVD, do so because they're not familar with Blu-ray so they keep buying the format they've known for many years. To me it's insane people are buying the latest huge 4K TV's, yet still keep buying DVD's to watch on them. Where I live, price difference is only small: around €15 for a DVD vs €18 for the Blu-ray (just an average new realease). Players are also dirt cheap nowadays. If the industry wanted to replace DVD with Blu-ray (which was the original plan), they've messed it up themselves by continuing to release new titles on DVD.

I've not seen 'The Never Ending Story' since it was made. But, i've always liked it.

Priscilla and A Bridge Too Far are my definites on this. I already have a blu-ray of Convoy but I'm interested in the extras. The Neverending Story I was too old to enjoy as a kiddie-winkie but it is deliciously unlike American fantasy films of the time. A wild month with all of them coming out on 4K, though.

Priscilla was the very first DVD I bought when the format first started ~ very happy to finally get the 4K treatment!

I remember that the first time I switched to Blu-Ray from DVD like then years ago I was super dissapointed on the release of Spider-Man 2, as all the bonus features from the DVD were missing. Behind the scenes for VFX, and the Videogame tie-in, interviews with cast, production team, deleted scenes, audio commentary with Sam Raimi and bloopers. We peaked with DVD and we didn't even know it.

4DX gives a better experience than Dbox to me . I wasn't really impressed by the Dbox seat. 4Dx is the total package!

I hope they gave you loo breaks!! waiting on my Showa era Criterion collectors set... which i pretty much got just for 1954 original on Blu-ray. if you've got J.L Carrozza's Japanese Science Fiction Film Encyclopedia, its kinda depressing just how many of those films are unattainable, unseen for years (barely in Japan) and don't seem to have been preserved. Some are apparently "lost" Aaaugh!! Given the worldwide appeal of Gojira (and friends) why Toho films didn't keep better care of these (along with the other studios) is a mystery.

I only get DVDs if it's the only format I can get a movie or show on. Everything else goes straight to 4K and/or Blu-Ray. Again depends on what is available on which. I find DVD to be fine for shows that aren't mastered in HD. But it's a different series if a show is remastered or actually mastered in HD to begin with. The original Teen Titans series for example. The Blu-Ray has the show in true 16:9 and in crisp HD when compared to the 4:3 and standard 480 it was showed in back when the show was new. Can even make the show comparable to shows that are produced when HD and 16:9 became the standard. Actually a majority of the DC animated series line-up have Blu-Rays. Not all of them are equal as Teen Titans since some series like Batman: The Animated Series (RIP Kevin Conroy) are still 4:3, but they still get resolution bump-ups and clean-ups to make them presentable on an HD or even 4K screen. I'm just happy that a lots of movies and shows are getting the Blu-Ray or even 4K treatments. Some I'm surprised didn't get Blus when the format was brand new, but better late than never. I even take SD on Blu-Ray. Advantage with SD on Blu-Ray is that they can put a series on just 1 - 4 discs with minimal compression when compared to DVD. May not be as big of an improvement than using an HD master or actual remastering efforts, but it's there. With Blu-Rays getting as cheap as DVDs they are the perfect balance between cost and quality. If you have an 1080p TV then they are brilliant, if on 4K then they'll still upscale nicer than DVDs. 4K is obviously the highest tier, but they can be expensive and obviously not everything is on that format (Blu still has a higher list of movies and shows to buy between that and 4K). If anything at least try to get movies you never owned yet or upgrade your favorites to start off with if you are looking to start collecting 4Ks.

What is a boutique release?

If there is a range of bluray releases for the same title, I generally always go for the one with the extras - if it is a bluray without any extras it is a disappointment - though, of course, the film is still key. Personally, not that interested in a cobbled together making of and the Q&A with the stars, prefer the discussion of the music, discussion of the lighting, a chat with the second assistant to the x or y or listening to the accountant talking about the financing of the film; an isolated soundtrack; also perhaps a discussion of the restoration and work done etc or someone chatting about Euro-Crime or Kim Newman on the film. Nice to get the multiple versions such as the UK or European or USA cut of the film as well. Love the Indicator / radiance / arrow blurays for those kinds of features. The big release ones have the least interesting extras for me I always assumed the lack of extras was just they had no space on the disk ? Or as all the features cost money with licensing, production etc that if the disk has a certain budget after the main picture, there is just nothing left to pay for the people to come in and be filmed, interviewed etc or the material is just so old and probably has been lost in some vault somewhere

DVDs should have been phased out in 2010. That they're still around in 2024 is ridiculous. They had their time but their quality just doesn't hold up by today's standards. Even most CZcams videos have higher resolution than a regular DVD. I've still kept all my DVDs (I have over 6000 of them) but many of them are painful to watch now on a 75-inch 4K screen, I've re-bought the movies I care about on Blu-Ray or 4K if available. The only things I still buy nowadays on DVD are old TV shows or music videos. Whenever I see a regular DVD in a store of a current movie, I ask "Why would you even PUT that on DVD?" They're especially a waste of space when stores are giving less of it overall to movies.

Umbrella did have a cheaper boxset of Late Night With The Devil. It didn't come with the VHS and TV Guide and cost $75. That's the version I preordered. I preordered The Blair Witch Collection from Imprint too. As soon as I saw it included Book Of Shadows I was all in, and I love the box art they've got going on. Second Sight do great stuff. Their boxset of Picnic At Hanging Rock is a thing of beauty and really is a fine tribute to a great film.

Another place I have imported a lot of Blu Ray movie's from because we didn't get a local release here in Australia is Rarewaves UK I picked up Robots dream on Blu Ray as JB Hi-Fi only had it on DVD and another movie i saw on streaming and that is Hundreds of beavers which I can't even see it up for pre-order from JB Hi-Fi

The chronicles of riddick dvd menu was unreal, you had to first choose to convert to the necromongers or rebel, then you got a different menu with each choice! THEN the special features menu was a whole different animated background for each choice! So cool, i want to hang onto my dvd version just for that

Think that's bad, I hear that most Nollywood movies are still sold on VCD. Because CDs are cheaper than DVDs. I know as an indie filmmaker I've been pricing out DVD vs Blu-ray for a 20th anniversary release of my first feature. Blu-ray is nearly three times the cost for the same amount of discs. Since my feature was shot on DV (standard definition) I have to ask myself if there is really much benefit to doing an upscale myself and paying three times more per disc. Especially when most DVD and Blu-ray players these days can do the upscaling just as well, and there are more DVD players out there then Blu-ray players, including all the Blu-ray players that can play DVDs. But I also may not even do a physical release at all. It just may not be worth it. Just figured I'd give you a different perspective.

If the companies who made it doesn't want to make a physical release, it's fine to go buy good bootlegs. A good example too is the original theatrical cut of Star Wars Episode 4 5 & 6, hasn't been legally available other than a tiny limited DVD release, whoch was just a transfer of the Laserdisc releases

You already summed up my thoughts in the video. I'm all for film preservation, but I don't care about most of the obscure films that the boutiques are restoring. I'm a mainstream normie and I LOVE IT when boutiques release mainstream movies, because they give it way more respect than the major studios do most of the time.

^Blu-rays

The times when the big studios put a lot of effort into the physical medium are long gone. It started with the introduction of the Blu-ray disk. The cover motifs were often Photoshop images and no longer the original drawn cover. In addition, there was less bonus material. In the worst case, there was only the trailer. But in times when the DVD was still popular, there was not only plenty of bonus material, but the DVD menu was also made with so much love and playful that it was simply fun. Now with the 4K UHD, which is already a niche market, things are not looking any better. I sometimes have the feeling that even less is being done with the 4K, not to mention that there have always been problems with playback or sound errors and then you wonder why many collectors and film fans are no longer satisfied. Then there's another thing that bothers me so much about the 4K format is the black Bluray cases because after a certain time a smear and gas builds up on the inside where strangely none of the collectors on CZcams mentions anything.

It is frustrating when your favorite movies get a physical media release with barebones features. It makes it feel like the studio doesn't care about the movie as much as you do. The latest Vacation 4K came with no special features. Ridiculous. And where's the other Vacation movies in 4K? Why don't we have a beautiful 4K box set with all of them yet? Where's all the American Pie movies in a 4K set? Better Call Saul box set? Even Game of Thrones, which actually DID get an amazIng bluray box set, got a really crappy 4K set released. Makes no sense. The Lord of the Rings ultimate collector's edition didn't even have all the special features in it!!! Like seriously? Insane! You didn't touch on this aspect in your video, but another thing that @cinemassacre talks about is how much better DVD menus were than blurays, and I agree. Studios just don't seem to put as much effort into releases anymore, they're more concerned about churning out movies to make money. Most of the time, this is why I like boutiques--they seem to care a lot more about their releases than the major studios do. I'm going to check out your channel and see what other videos you have. I'm really surprised you have no comments on this video after a week. Nice collection btw!

Got a copy myself as I’m a huge fan of the film and only have an old DVD version which doesn’t look the best. Do you know whether there was only 1000 copies as mine says “Flim” instead of film on the outer case front and spine and looking online I’ve seen other similarly misspelled copies? It’s no major concern as the film and extras are what I wanted but I was wondering whether Umbrella had issued anything regarding the error? Still, fantastic film and the woman (Florinda Balkan) was also in the superb “Don’t Torture A Duckling” which I’m hoping will get a deluxe edition sometime …

Good points mate. I'm on fence if realising mainstream will fund that hidden unknown little gem, then I'm ok with it. But it's a scary thought Shrek coming to Criterion 😂 But could happen 🤔 . I love Vinegar Syndrome it's like playing lucky dip you never know what to expect everything from Drop Dead Fred, a great family movie to Debbie Dose Dallas 2 and everything in between 😂🫠🤭🤭 and lets face it some of the best looking slip covers in the game if that is your thing.I personally don't get to see or get them often but when i do.....Dam they look good.

Loved Arrow Academy and like Arrow Video a bit less! I could happily do without most of their giallo, horror and asian martial arts movies! But "THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E" is an excellent movie, worth defending, despite the enormous controversy surrounding Armie Hammer!
